Women in Short Skirts Are [Insert Opinion Here]

Simone enjoys fashion and fashion accessories. She also finds garments to be more about strategy than stereotypes.

The Meaning of the Short Skirt and Why You Might Want to Rethink Your Opinion

The Meaning of the Short Skirt and Why You Might Want to Rethink Your Opinion

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I am a huge proponent of the short skirt. These loincloth-like garments have manifold benefits and are quite versatile to boot. That said, short skirts, despite their small size, are loaded with mixed messages and emotional baggage.

Nearly everyone harbors some (or a truckload full of) prejudices about these skimpy garments. Don't pretend that you stand apart from the judging masses, sir and/or madam! It is much better to bring the major short-skirter stereotypes out into the open, acknowledge their valid points, dispel their weak points, and ascend to higher planes of understanding.

Feel free to skip around and read only about the short skirt prejudices that you personally harbor. If, however, you are a short skirt wearer, I heartily recommend reading the whole article. Let's go! So . . . you think women in short skirts are . . .

She's not slutty; she's just enjoying the smoke machine from a better vantage point.

She's not slutty; she's just enjoying the smoke machine from a better vantage point.

Sluts

Many associate short skirts with sluttiness and, therefore, assume that the women donning them are, by the power of garment-reputation-transferral, slutty individuals (or if you prefer, strumpets).

This is often a fair point. If loose women were to wear a uniform, it would probably incorporate a very high hemline. Skimpy skirts are just so darned practical. And, I suppose, provocative. Clearly short skirts deviate as far as possible from all principles of modesty, so anyone actively trying to demonstrate non-slutty behavior would be foolish to wedge into one.

Nevertheless, there are plenty of non-strumpets out there who love wearing short skirts simply because they're fun, funny, non-restrictive, super breathable, and less of a laundry burden. I know many of them. They're more prudish than a handful of very modest (but nonetheless very . . . frisky) women I know. The gist is this: Yes, some women who wear short skirts are sluts. But some are not. So don't judge too harshly, young grasshopper.

Well, that red mini-mini skirt *does* clash a bit with the plunger. Not supposed to mix the two after Labor Day.

Well, that red mini-mini skirt *does* clash a bit with the plunger. Not supposed to mix the two after Labor Day.

Distasteful

Many women wearing short skirts (myself included) should likely not be wearing short skirts for the following reasons:

  • They show too much, and not in a good way
  • They don't fit properly
  • They don't conform to social norms
  • They are not appropriate for a given place/crowd/occasion
  • They attract too much attention

There are indeed scenarios in which short skirts should not be worn, and about 50% of women wearing short skirts are, indeed, wearing them in bad taste. That's right. About 50% of women wearing short skirts are (alas) distasteful.

What I wish to call to your attention is that not only that 50% of women succeed in wearing short skirts appropriately and in good taste, but also that the 50% of women who fail to do so still have the right to do so (at least in most places), and that is a huge societal advancement.

That women have the freedom to make these poor choices for themselves, to flaunt their cellulite, lame panties, and muffin tops, to make people uncomfortable and insult their good taste, and to make general fools of themselves, is brilliant! This is feminism at its best! Revel in its distasteful glory!

What's more, one must always keep in mind that distastefulness lies at the very reactor core of fashion. The distasteful move of today may very well be the height of good taste tomorrow.

Sexy

Yes, yes, many people (often individuals who associate short skirts with sluts) find short skirts to be sexy. Additional elaboration is not necessary. But have you considered the un-sexy side of short skirts? Have you meditated on the unflattering things that they reveal? Have you contemplated the manner in which the thighs of women wearing short skirts stick to, and must subsequently be peeled off of, bus seats, park benches, and other seats in hot weather?

Have you considered that women wearing short skirts have so little left to reveal? That they might be flaunting their sausage-like thighs out of sad, pitiful desperation? Where is the sexiness in that? If I were a guy, I don't know how much I'd really appreciate women in short skirts. When one really thinks about them, they're not that sexy at all.

Short skirt wearers have their moments.

Short skirt wearers have their moments.

Stupid

If you find short skirts to be impractical, immodest, or just a sign of feminine daftness, chances are you associate the women wearing these contentious garments with stupidity. There are indeed times when women wearing short skirts are stupid. From personal experience, I can tell you that I was very stupid to wear a short skirt:

Read More From Bellatory

  • In a typhoon
  • In below-freezing weather during a blizzard
  • While walking alone down dark alleyways in the dead of night

However, I was more than stupid in those moments. I was also being . . .

  • Ironic
  • Self-deprecating
  • Humorous
  • Adventurous
  • Manipulative

So before knocking a short-skirt-wearing woman for being stupid, take a moment to consider whether or not she might also be something else as well. Perhaps she is feeling depressed and needs to laugh at herself. Perhaps she needs help and realizes that the best way to get it in a given controlled situation is to look stupid and helpless. Perhaps she is very smart indeed but simply likes the breeze.

The point I am trying to make is that one can be at once stupid and many, many other things. And often stupidity is a gateway to surprising genius.

Perhaps this was not the perfect photo choice...

Perhaps this was not the perfect photo choice...

Smart, Fashionable, Strategically Savvy

I've just finished describing how wearing a short skirt may not be so stupid, but don't think I'm letting short-skirting gals off the hook.

Short skirts can be used for a lot of things: mobility, manipulation, tanning, fashion, ventilation, and even impromptu tourniquets. Still, there are far superior alternatives to short skirts that are readily available to all women, and any female depending too heavily on short skirts to meet her goals, whatever they may be, is nothing more than a sad, one-trick pony.

As with all things, short skirts are best utilized in moderation. Taking them too far, or using them too frequently, is more than just stupid; it's sad.

What are short-skirt wearing women to you?

Like I said, we've all got short skirt prejudices. What are yours? Let your voice be heard in the poll to your right. Just keep in mind that there is always more to a short skirt wearing woman than meets the eye. The same can be said of anyone wearing any sort of garment, be it a burqa or a zoot suit. Try not to judge people's outfits to harshly.

As some old dude once said, "All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players." The things we wear are mere costume pieces. We're simply having fun with life. Take what you see with a grain of salt, and let the plot and characters, not the costumes, reveal life's brilliant stories. You're bound to enjoy the show much more that way.

Have Your Say!

Have your opinions on short skirters changed?

kaf9292 on April 16, 2020:

As Bruce stated both men and women who wear short skirts are displaying the intelligence to make smart, practical, comfortable choices in clothing rather than attempting to emulate their next door neighbor. They think for themselves rather than mindlessly following a "herd mentality".

Bruce Johnson on April 16, 2020:

You gave 7 choices for "Women in short skirts are": There should be one more choice: CONFIDENT

Having tried on a short stretch denim 5 pocket mini skirt as a male to see what it is all about I discovered COMFORT was my number one sensation followed by FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT was outstanding. A short skirt simply makes more sense for males to wear than females due to no crotch binding inseams. Someday guys will wake up and quit following "Social Conformity".

kaf9292 on August 01, 2019:

Add: Men and women in short skirts are... COMFORTABLE!

D on July 12, 2016:

i wouldn't tell my girlfriend what to wear, but I was a bit gutted when she said she wouldn't wear shorts because of her legs looking bad. I adore her legs .. especially the cellulite on the top of her thighs; does it for me.

Naughtly I'd quite like to see her in a short skirt. And enjoy the psychology of glances to her from other people/ guys ;-)

Having said that her running gear shows off her shape nicely anyway.

Jason Lim from Singapore on December 21, 2011:

Confident, and a gift to men's eyes everywhere.

Anon on December 19, 2011:

This falls into the stupid skirt-wearing category:

I used to have to visit prisons for work every so often. And one day I turned up for work having not having thought my day through very carefully. I was wearing a smart, but figure hugging dress, with a short, split skirt. And that afternoon I was due to go to a high security male prison. Wasn't anything I could do about it. I had to go. Unfortunately I had to walk up a metal grate staircase to get to the offices, one of the ones you can see through.

Well luckily I had learnt to turn my ears off to jeers, wolf-whistles and comments. Going regularly into that kind of environment you just do. And I learnt my lesson that day, from then onwards I made sure I was wearing trousers for every prison visit.

uknow on December 17, 2011:

short skirt wearers-i hope have awesome legs and are wearing the right panties. if not short skirt wearers may be advertising something else or blind.

Princessrockstar on December 16, 2011:

I'm a short skirt wearer, about two inches above the knee. I also love tights, high heels, and band t-shirts haha. I feel like I'm judged very harshly, but I wear what I want because I like feeling like a girl and you only get one life :D

AEvans on October 26, 2011:

In my 20's I wore short skirts and dresses! For some reason as I have gotten through the 20-something my hemlines have dropped and I really love the pencil skirts. Those to look very sexy, with a nice pair of pumps. I laughed until I cried with this hub! :D

smzclark from cheshire on October 24, 2011:

short skirts are one thing, but when you can even see the skirt until their top rises up...that's what is unnacceptable! i was recently walking up the stairs in a club behind a girl in one of these 'so-called' skirts. i could not believe my eyes when i looked up to see that she was wearing nothing underneath!!! i worry for my daughters future...hopefully the fashion will be more tasteful by then.

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on October 17, 2011:

Excellent point, leroy! I've seen a lot of women wearing jeans that look MUCH sexier than they would in short skirts.

Brian L. Powell from Dallas, Texas (Oak Cliff) on October 17, 2011:

Hey it's leroy64 again. I was checking out the comments again. They are a lot of fun to read. With all of the attention on short skirts, I feel an urge to remind people that women can look sexy in jeans and sweatshirt, or jeans and anything really. I am not complaining about the short skirts; but, short skirts are only one option. If you are uncomfortable in short skirts, rock those blue jeans.

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on October 17, 2011:

You're quite right, Erin Boggs1!

And that's a really good question, BurinessTime! I've been wondering the same thing myself lately. I think they do make a significant difference, and I agree with you in that it's much more comfortable to wear short skirts with boots and tights. Sitting on stuff is less gross, too!

Sarah Kolb-Williams from Twin Cities on October 14, 2011:

What a great hub! Here's another layer to add to the topic: do boots and/or legging affect the impression as well? I have a few short skirts myself, and I can occasionally be seen on a hot day in July with bare legs and flip-flops, but I'm MUCH more comfortable in the fall wearing the same skirt over leggings and boots. Same shape, less skin! I feel fashionable and pretty without feeling uncomfortable or like I have to check my hemline every 5 seconds. :)

Erin Boggs1 from Western Maryland on October 11, 2011:

I agree with you Simone, but the only reason that it is hard to mock them without perpetuating them is because unfortunately there are many young women, who should be more concerned with proving that their brains are the most seductive object they possess, that are continuously trying to prove the old stereotypes to be true. We all know the types, we have at least once in our lives had to stand in the same room with them while wishing that a freak lightening storm would form and strike the building just so that we could watch the them have to run out of a flaming building in those 6 inch stilettos that she wears with that hiked up skirt just hoping she will trip (maybe not to that extreme lol). And at least once in our lives we have all tried to pull off a short skirt even if it was just in our house in front of a mirror.

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on October 10, 2011:

Excellent insights, Erin! I'm with you all the way. Stereotypes are rarely, if ever, accurate. I prefer to mock them rather than perpetuate them, but it looks like it's hard to do the former without doing the latter!

tanyarobyn from London on October 10, 2011:

I love short skirts! Worn tastefully they can be very sexy.

Erin Boggs1 from Western Maryland on October 10, 2011:

Simone, I like this article...but as a woman loves the pencil skirt, usually supposed anywhere from 4 inches above the knee to knee length, and who also stands at height of 5'9" I don't feel that some of these opinions are fair. I am a nerd, a smart woman who loves to be taken seriously, unfortunately the average woman stands 5'3" to 5'5" so the skirts that can be found are usually way to short for my liking. I have found have to pass on every skirt as they are too short for a woman my height, so I wear dress pants, but when you go on a date with your fiancé it would be nice to wear a skirt and know people are looking at you like a slut.

I really do understand where you are coming from with these stereotypes. As there are lot of girls who do or are all of the above things. Those women make it harder for us women that seem to be descendents of big foot.

As always I love your work. Have a great day!

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on September 27, 2011:

Well, there you go, sakesare.

You're right about location, nikashi_designs. And interesting observation! I'd never heard of that video until this point.

nikashi_designs on September 27, 2011:

Will keep this Short! Short shorts look great on some women but not on most. Also, I think location is an important factor. I lived in South Beach for seven years and all the girls wear short shorts. No one is really stunned or thinks anything about it. At the same time I lived in Boston for a while which is very conservative and when young women wore short shorts they were really looked at, some my consider them of questionable moral. You have to know your audience. I think Jessica Simpson, these boots were made for walking video revitalized the fashion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPtfsk4ETjM

sakesare on September 27, 2011:

interesting hub and definitely sideshow... =D

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on September 26, 2011:

Fair assessment, jessicatools!

I think there is something quite classy and classic about dressing modestly, tlmcgaa70, and I tip my hat to you for dressing in a manner that's best for your body type- not that's best for the current trends. I could learn a lot from you!

Hahaa, that sounds like a loincloth, Patty Inglish, MS! Though I guess many micro-minis and loincloths are pretty much the same thing. And hey, short skirts and long jackets are awesome. Cake wrote that song for a reason! I've done the blizzard thing too. It scares the crap out of people! Don't you LOVE that??

I think that is very fair, balanced advice, Moon Daisy!

Thanks so much for stopping by, JeniferRW! Life sure does have enough to get one down, so I say it's best to do as many fun, superfluous, ridiculous things as possible. It's impossible not to live without offending someone, so you're quite right- there's no use in worrying about it most of the time.

Moods and skirt lengths... I like the idea, Carlon Michelle! And yeah, it's a shame when folks overdo with everything- perfume, showy clothes... though it is also wonderfully entertaining!

Attikos, that is the best set of answers. Simplicity wins again. Thanks for the excellent comment!

Attikos from East Cackalacky on September 26, 2011:

When faced by a question with a potentially multifaceted answer, reduce it to its simplest terms:

Women who wear short skirts are ...

A. showing off their legs if in a social setting; or

B. freeing their legs for less restrictive action if in an athletic setting.

Due to the expectations of others not all social settings are appropriate for it (a formal ball, for one), nor due to ambient conditions are all athletic settings (take snow skiing, for instance). Other than that, though, there's not a thing wrong with either one.

Carlon Michelle from USA on September 25, 2011:

Great controversial hub! I think short skirts like any other type of clothing has to be done right. I try never to wear a short skirt more than 2 inches above my knees. I have thick thighs and a bit of cellulite that I don't want to see and figure the world could do without seeing. Everything below my skirt length is sexy. So yeah I have moods where I like to show them.

I think loin cloth skirts where women only cover their buttocks are giving the world a different type of message such as I need lots of attention and I don't care if it's the wrong kind as long as it's attention. These are generally worn very tight and topped with breast showing clothing, too much makeup and over indulgence in perfume. That's when the message of I'm fashionable and sexy takes a walk. So the slut part comes with the entire look, walk, posture and additional clothing and accessories.

Smile!

Jen from Couch on September 25, 2011:

Love this hub! It shines a whole new vantage point on women wearing short skirts plus it's full, as always of comedic anecdotes and wit. I definitely am not one who wears short skirts simply because I'm just not comfortable with it on myself. Can't say I have ever looked at a woman wearing a short skirt and judged them for it either though. To each their own..and if short skirts are your thing or anything that is comfortable and makes you feel good about you, then I say Bravo! Generally we all worry so much about what others are thinking of us, they too, are worrying about our opinions of them. If wearing a short skirt or no clothes at all (outside of going to jail), makes you feel beautiful or confident, keep it up because life has enough crappy things in it to bring you down already, without having to worry if somebody might be offended by the length of your skirt.

Patty Inglish MS from USA and Asgardia, the First Space Nation on September 25, 2011:

Short skirts in a blizzard, not short shirts. LOL

Moon Daisy from London on September 25, 2011:

"The point I am trying to make is that one can be at once stupid and many, many other things". Love it!

Moon Daisy from London on September 25, 2011:

I think short skirts are fine. My own personal view is that people can look good in them if they wear them casually, with flat shoes like flip-flops, crocs or converse. Heels and short skirts look old-fashioned and ageing in my opinion. They also look good with leggings.

It helps if you are the right shape to wear a short skirt, otherwise it can be unflattering.

Patty Inglish MS from USA and Asgardia, the First Space Nation on September 25, 2011:

The subgenre that got to me as inappropriate was the micro-miniskirt that also had a slit in the hem going half-way up the skirt - matching short-shorts or dance panties were really needed. Now, with fashionable tights underneath and a matching blouse, this was interesting for dance wear, though.

I wore short shirts in a blizzard - that's all you could buy that year. So, we wore longer coats.

tlmcgaa70 from south dakota, usa on September 24, 2011:

i am not a fan of mini skirts, maybe because i am smart enough to realize they would not compliment my figure. but also, i have always leaned more towards the modest look. a bit old fashioned, but there you go. someone above me mentioned overweight women who dress in skimpy clothes. i have never understood how they could think they looked good...i would be mortified to wear clothes that do not cover me decently...the only exception is a bathing suit and even it is a one piece with a skirt on it. i am over weight but have been told i have a nice figure. but to me it is not one i would care to share with the world.

i enjoyed your hub, thank you for sharing it. voted up

And way to go, Non-Conformist! Yeah, there's a time and a place for short skirts. So long as one realizes when it's time to let them go, all's well!

Non-Conformist on September 16, 2011:

Love the articule. I have to say I wore a short skirts through out my late teens to early twenties. For me it was just fashion and a bit of fun. Expressing ones youth openess, and madness without offending too many glaring-eyes! I knew full well that once I hit my late twenties I would no longer be able to wear a mini-skirt as a young-fashion-fun piece of clothing! Like some of the girls in my school at the age o 18 were wearing laury-ashely dress that just made them look like they were in their thirities!

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on September 14, 2011:

Good point about contextual clothing, Pia! So glad you're for short skirts, Silva Hayes! And so true about matching underwear. So true!

Meaning really does vary a lot, doesn't it, naturalsolutions? I think that's one reason why I wrote this Hub.

Sigh... perhaps you're right, sharewhatuknow! Though I hope/think not. Or at least hope/think not at least within the context of my own workplace. I don't think anyone notices my short skirts. I hope not. I don't want to give them up!

sharewhatuknow from Western Washington on September 09, 2011:

If you have the bod to wear short skirts, then do so. That is no more different than women with those bods that wear bikinis and obviously have to shave, if you get my meaning.

However, short skirts should be kept out of the office where there are more than a handful of employees. For one, the hetero males are going to go gaga and approach/flirt with you every chance they get, decreasing actual man hours at work. Pardon the pun.

Likewise, the women who refuse to dress like that, sexy bod or not, or CAN'T dress like that because they would be the laughing stock of the company, pardon the pun once again, are the ones who will despise you and state that you are just seeking attention.

naturalsolutions on September 08, 2011:

I think it's just matter of fashioned why girls wearing short skirts. Maybe the meaning of wearing that is really depends on the people looking. Some people are so conservative, others are liberated but the important thing is what it's attitude we must always remember not to judge the person on it's physical appearance, sometimes looks are deceiving.

Silva Hayes from Spicewood, Texas on September 08, 2011:

I'm twerty times eleven and I was reprimanded once by the office manager for my short skirt. Hahaha. This was way back in the late Sixties. I think they're fashionable in any decade. Although I think it would be a good idea to wear matching color underwear when one wears a short skirt. And they do look uncomfortable when ladies sit down for an interview on TV and must clamp their knees together and sit sideways so the audience doesn't get an unintended view. Overall, I vote for the short skirt. And I think your writing style is brilliant.

PiaC from Oakland, CA on September 08, 2011:

Its what one wears with the short skirt that makes the outfit I think. A short skirt paired with a white shirt and boots is work appropriate, while a spangly top and heels make the same skirt more appropriate for parties. :)

Oh, what a good point you make, talfonso! I had never thought of skirts used in dance as "short skirts" - they were always just strictly in the 'costume' category of my mind. But they're totally short skirts!

Good Hub, but I believe that there is a time and place for short skirts. The situation where I can tolerate them the most is anything with dance as art, in particular jazz dance (especially with high school dance teams/dancelines/drill teams with band) and ballet.

I'm chuffed, amysanders! Thank you! And to each one's own indeed. The world would be dreadfully boring if everyone thought, believed, dressed, and acted the same.

Those three factors make such a huge difference, don't they kittythedreamer! The bend over rule is a big one, too. Though I've learned how to go throughout the day without ever bending over. Hehee. Good point about leggings and stockings, too! And don't forget bike shorts!

I think when short skirts are worn appropriately they are cute. It depends on a few things.

1. the length

2. the style

3. the girl who's wearing it!

If I am to wear a short skirt, it's going to at least be long enough so that when I bend over my butt doesn't pop out the bottom. Also, leggings or stockings are nice to wear underneath to not be such a "strumpet". :)

Jennuhlee from Pennsylvania on August 06, 2011:

Loved this hub! You are such a great writer! This was so honest and witty! Really great hub, thank you for sharing!

sj_workman79 on August 06, 2011:

I love short skirts, AS long as they are worn in the appropriate setting.

carlness from San Francisco on August 06, 2011:

Hilarious. That made me laugh this morning. Just yesterday my girlfriend and I were trying to figure out if a woman in the mall was a prostitute or not. Voted up plus funny.

Jeannie Marie from Baltimore, MD on August 05, 2011:

Awesome hub! I've been known to wear a short skirt a time or two. Sometimes it is just necessary to wear one - like when I would like some free drinks. It is simply an important item to own.

Wesman Todd Shaw from Kaufman, Texas on August 05, 2011:

My Grandfather used to tell . . .any woman younger than him: "That's a really pretty dress! It's sad that they ran out of material before they finishes it. . . "

Brenda Barnes from America-Broken But Still Beautiful on August 05, 2011:

Short skirts are gorgeous when worn properly. I am an old lady now and still wear them sometimes. There is a point where short becomes slutty and even a young, beautiful girl cannot pull that off. Short leaves imagination intrigued, slutty says, "How much?"

Love your Hub. Hyphenbird

GrowingDeeper on August 05, 2011:

Short is a relative term but theres a point where modesty goes out the window depending upon the wearer and the style, etc. Anywho, without giving a snarling opinion, awesomely written Hub. I'm a first timer to the Simone Smith collection but do look forward to catching up on others by the aforementioned quite witty author :)

FloraBreenRobison on August 05, 2011:

oh, I always tell my age. I am 35. It was a typo no more. I type with one hand andhave been known to make them. Usually I have time to fix them. But I thought the spelling was so funny, that I left it and commented. I was born in 1976. It says so on my profile page. :-)

Om Paramapoonya on August 05, 2011:

Nice hub. I like wearing short skirts a lot because I'm really height challenged, and they just look cute on my body type. I don't think they make me appear slutty or sexy at all. Well, who knows? Behind my back, some people might call me "slutty smurf"!

Angie Jardine from Cornwall, land of the eternally youthful mind ... on August 05, 2011:

Simone - you could have added 'Carefree' or 'Independent' or 'Couldn't give a rat's ass' to your poll - great hub! I laughed like a drain at 50's comments, bless him. I have my own dirty old man and it makes me mad as a bag of frogs.

And I took FloraBR's 'twirty' as a clever way of not giving away her age ... definitely a new word I am going to use, even though I'm 'sisty'.

PS. I was once sent home from work as my skirt was too short and all the old geezer's in the office were having heart attacks when I bent over. Of course in those days I was naughty and had no cellulite ... great fun!

Susan Hazelton from Sunny Florida on August 05, 2011:

Simone, there's a time and a place. I think the short skirts look cute on the right person. I enjoyed the wit and humor laced throughout the article. Up, funny, and interesting. You never dissapoint.

Becky on August 05, 2011:

Some women can look good wearing short skirts, some can't. If you make someone gag, while bulging out of the top and bottom and it looks more like a tourniquet than a skirt, DON'T wear it. Bad taste seems to abound any more (at least where I live), and I am not sure who told these women that fat was sexy, but they were wrong. Cover it up. If you are not built to wear a short skirt, do the world a favor, and don't.

Short skirts and flip-flops in an office are a personal call. It comes down to the question of "Do you want to advance in your career?" If you do, don't wear them, dress conservatively.

Thelma Alberts from Germany on August 05, 2011:

Great hub. Wearing short skirts? It depends what kind of a person who is wearing the short skirt. It is how the way she moves that makes us judge how she is. Thanks for sharing. Voted up.

50 Caliber from Arizona on August 05, 2011:

Simone, those mirror shoes are something, never had any, but when I lived in California my bank had line ropes for people to line up in and the bases were mirror chrome and by accident I noticed one day, wow what a view! Made waiting in line a bit more fun and got me slapped up side the head one day, never saw it coming, LOL, 50

Gail Sobotkin from South Carolina on August 05, 2011:

Great hub with lots of wit and style regardless of whether or not one likes short skirts on women. Voted up across the board.

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on August 05, 2011:

Wow, thanks applecsmith! I appreciate your reading the Hub!

You're justified in your view, EBower- a recent study by Adecco revealed that 70% of respondents found miniskirts to be inappropriate for the office (though 71% were also against flip flops, which I find pretty inoffensive).

HennieN- you're right. It's all about the woman.

Even working girls dress for each other, PETER LUMETTA! I can definitely attest to that. Thanks for stopping by!

FloraBreenRobison, I now want to tell everyone that I am twirty years old. Let's make this a word that encompasses all ages that are generally awesome. And YOU ROCKED SKORTS!! NICE!!! I can't find them ANYWHERE these days.

Agreed, mtsi1098! Much of short skirt wearing has to do with the "I can pull this off" attitude of the wearer.

Excellent rule of thumb, LiamBeam. I've lived by that and it works quite well.

Whoever invented mirrored shoes, 50 Caliber, is brilliant. They're so much more subtle than the conflict-ridden upside down periscopes of the 1830s.

Glad to have cleared that up for you, leroy64! Boy, it's AWFUL to sit in short skirts. Once, I sat on a hot, painted metal chair- and when I stood up, the paint flecked off with my legs! IT HAD FUSED TO MY SKIN!!!

Wise words, sharmanlow. Short skirts should absolutely be worn responsibly.

raakachi from Madurai / Tamilnadu / India on August 05, 2011:

very fine! very interesting! Any way thanks for your sharing.

sharmanlow on August 05, 2011:

found your hub interestingly gorgeous. skirts? short or not, you just to be responsible when wearing them.

Brian L. Powell from Dallas, Texas (Oak Cliff) on August 05, 2011:

Thankyou,

I now understand why those women at the train station would not sit down. The temperature had gone above 100 degrees and the seats were metal. Honestly, I don't think about short skirts much. They turn my brain off, or make me laugh depending on the situation.

50 Caliber from Arizona on August 05, 2011:

Being a dirty old man the only thing I'd like to hold against them is... um bleep bleep..... They make the mirrors on my toes well worth the money FLMAO, first rate hub, 50

LiamBean from Los Angeles, Calilfornia on August 05, 2011:

My take on this is that if a woman has to forcefully pull the skirt down as she sits it's probably too short.

That said there is nothing quite as nice as a great pair of legs highlighted by a short skirt.

mtsi1098 on August 05, 2011:

despite that you think you should not wear short skirts, I think women look great in them as long as they are comfortable wearing one...

FloraBreenRobison on August 05, 2011:

that is not since I turned "thirty". how I hate one handed typing. Looks like I created a word combining thirty with twenty. Would that then be a new word for twenty-five?

FloraBreenRobison on August 04, 2011:

I haven't eevr worn a short skirt as short as some of these in the pictures. I would feel like I had to spend a lot of time focusing on how I was sitting. I have worn skirts as short as half way down my thighs but not since I turned twirty. And I never did wear a short skirt to work. I do rermember a pair of shorts that had a wrap around that I wore in highschool. It looked like a mini skirt from the front, but they were shorts. I would never feel comfortable-at any age- in a skirt as short as the women with the smoke machine. Too revealing for me.

PETER LUMETTA from KENAI, ALAKSA on August 04, 2011:

Most cases women dress for the benefit of other women, unless they are working girls. To me as a man it all just looks good and I want to see more. Not a rocket science test question, Loved it, Peter

HennieN from South Africa on August 04, 2011:

Interesting hub. For me it is about the person. Some ladies can wear short skirts with class, while others ... lets leave it here. There is nothing wrong with showing a little if you are able (keyword) to do it.

Erin Bower from Georgia on August 04, 2011:

I must confess I had to read this the whole way through. I admit that I usually believe short skirts are distasteful. Although, when not worn in the office, or on a stage, they can look decent on some women. I really enjoyed reading this; it was quite amusing, so I voted it up and awesome!

Carrie Smith from Dallas, Texas on August 04, 2011:

Fabulous hub again, as always! I enjoy how your articles challenge my mindset and offer new points of view. Bravo!
