5 Reasons to Wear Short Skirts

Simone enjoys fashion and fashion accessories. She also finds garments to be more about strategy than stereotypes.

I need to set the world straight. Women do not wear short skirts for men. When they do wear short skirts for other people, it just might be to show off in front of other girls, though I do not think that people flaunt miniskirts for that reason, either.

Wearing short skirts is awesome—and for more reasons than you might expect. I should know. I adhere to short skirts like a religion. I wear them regardless of season, occasion, or time of day. I get a lot of mileage out of them—and I'm not talking about getting attention, because I'm rather reclusive and shy.

Let us break the monotonous cycle of misinformation. Here are five REAL reasons why women, myself included, wear short skirts:

  1. Aesthetics
  2. Laziness
  3. Mobility
  4. Fitness
  5. Opportunity

Cake

Let's start with a bit of culture. Before you knock me off as a woman of loose dressing morals, keep in mind that for most of—well, half of—my life, skirts were entirely out of the picture. Everyone wore pants! I wore pants! Pants abounded!

And then I was introduced to culture. And Cake. You know, that band with the fantastic lyrics and trumpets and the grape-scented albums.

Along with culture (and Cake) came the adoration of short skirts. Cake specifically left me with Short Skirt/Long Jacket, which acts as a convenient microcosm for my societal brainwashing as well as the contents of my closet.

Take a moment and think of all the movies, magazines, models, shows, songs, and stars that have put short skirts on a pedestal. I dare you to tell me with a straight face that you still think women wear short skirts for other people. But I am not finished yet. Let us proceed.

Short skirts are aesthetically interesting.

Short skirts are aesthetically interesting.

1. Aesthetics

Face it. Nearly every short skirt out there is more aesthetically interesting than a pair of pants—or even a long skirt (this was, of course, not the case when petticoats were still the norm). They have more flare and verve. They also do more for pleats than their midi or maxi sisters.

Short skirts do more to show off the leg, not to mention boots, knee socks, thigh highs, and shoes, which are more often than not sadly concealed under pants and long skirts

2. Laziness

Believe it or not, short skirts are great for lazy people. As they are so small, they are exceedingly easy to put on. In all honesty, they are the closest modern alternative to loin cloths, and everyone knows clothing gets neither easier nor more rudimentary than those garments.

What's more, short skirts make the cumbersome task of going to the bathroom (which, tragically for women, always requires sitting down) far easier as they can simply be hiked up (and to to their spare yardage, even the hiking is reduced to more of a from-couch-to-fridge stroll). No doubt this has already spared me at least a collective two hours I would have otherwise spent fumbling with pants, long skirts, or (god forbid) overalls.

I dare you to try shooting and slashing off heads in a pencil skirt. Go on. Waddle your way to fierceness.

I dare you to try shooting and slashing off heads in a pencil skirt. Go on. Waddle your way to fierceness.

3. Mobility

Believe me, I tried to give midi and maxi skirts a try. Really, I did. And what did it get me? A sprained ankle. True story.

The fact of the matter is that medium and long skirts, especially pencil skirts and narrow skirts, severely restrict movement. And long skirts that have lots of fabric get caught on things and can entangle and trip their incapacitated wearers. I have walked around cities in giant goose costumes (another true story) that are easier to move in than some of my cute medium/long skirts. It's infuriating.

Any girl who wants to take broad bounds and leaps, kick stuff, lunge, and even walk aggressively must wear a short skirt. It is a simple mechanical issue.

Obviously pants are an alternative, but short skirts are far more fun to wear.

Short skirts remind you of the importance of exercise.

Sitting in a short skirt? Ehh.... not so great. But that's all the more opportunity for a core-workout-heavy bout of metro surfing!

Sitting in a short skirt? Ehh.... not so great. But that's all the more opportunity for a core-workout-heavy bout of metro surfing!

4. Fitness

Believe it or not, short skirts lead to excellent fitness. Bear with me.

  1. First, they remind the wearer of the importance of regular exercise. While it is easy to hide inconvenient fitness truths under baggy clothes and pants, short skirts bear one's body for the whole world to see. This keeps the wearer honest- and conscientious about gym attendance.
  2. Second, short skirt wearers are more likely than their safely swaddled counterparts to stand rather than sit. Why? Because sitting in a public place whilst wearing a short skirt is gross. Downright disgusting.

A bunch of studies have been making their way toward the media referring to how disgusting seats on public transport are. These seats, laced with viruses and fecal matter, are so gross that even the jean-wearing masses hesitate to use them. Those wearing short skirts, which pretty much don't provide any intermediary between seats and panty-clad bottoms, are even more averse to the prospect.

Even if one is not germ phobic, sitting in short skirts can still be less than ideal. Once I had the bad judgment to sit down on a metal painted chair in a hot building. When I stood up after an hour, half the paint had fused to my legs and came off with me. This has happened more than once.

Short Skirts Make You Stand

My ultimate point is that sitting is inconvenient for short skirters, and for this reason, they stand whenever given the option to do so.

Standing inspires movement, and even when done in a stationery manner, requires more muscle use. Hence standers are, on the whole, doing more to keep fit.

As a side note, standers also spend more time in positions of dominance. I mean, someone on her feet is always going to appear more powerful than someone slouched into a chair.

5. Opportunity

Finally, those wearing short skirts are making the most of a fleeting opportunity. Neither their age nor fitness will last for long. The body is a tool. An asset. A toy. You can choose to take good care of it and fully utilize it, or you can ignore, or even stifle, its manifold features.

Different people choose to celebrate different aspects of their bodies—their strength, their voices, their minds, and yes, their legs. Those wearing skirts are simply doing the most they can with an excellent and fleeting opportunity. Some might call doing so gauche, distasteful, or even irresponsible, but I call it smart.

Long Live Short Skirts!

I will admit that short skirts are not for all body types and all ages. I will also concede that short skirts are not always the appropriate thing to wear. But when the body type, age, and situation are aligned in favor of these minuscule garments, they are definitely worth wearing. So consider your personal constellations. Can a short skirt factor in? I hope so!

Men and women wear short skirts for comfort. I know I certainly do not care what you think of my legs although they are as smooth, tanned and hairless as any lady's legs. What is so difficult to understand about wanting to dress as comfortably as permitted when you have to wear clothing.

Julio on July 31, 2019:

I am not buying that women do not wear short skirts for others to notice. You just said that it shows your legs off when you have nice legs. If you wear short skirts just for you then why does ot matter whether you legs look good or not.

DonaldDucko on June 04, 2019:

Look at the differences in men’s and women’s clothing. Women’s stuff is lighter, tighter, shorter, exposes more skin. Is their a reason a woman’s shirt scoops all the way down revealing their boobs? Do tell a functional reason for this. Airflow? Look at women’s sleeves either non existent or at minimum shorter. The fabric is always more see through. You have to be able to see your bra why? Women don’t even realize what they’re doing when they put on their clothes, heels, etc. and don’t get me started on makeup. Your not objects to be looked at yet you spend how much time and money on makeup to change your appearance? I’ve known women who won’t leave the house without makeup. “Be who you are.” “Be yourself.” You know all that crap you teach your kids that you don’t really believe. Studies of men’s brains have confirmed it. Men see women as objects. That part of the brain is triggered. Same part of the brain when they see a Ferrari. A true feminist would look more like an Amish woman than a slut in booty shorts, boobs hanging out holding some pro abortion sign.

kaf9292 on May 21, 2018:

No John. Many quaint villages included. Places where the birds replaced traffic sounds. Really it is all about attitude. Since I have cruised around the world, taken trains across Europe, taken bus tours in almost every continent, I am totally at ease wearing a skirt or a dress. In fact, I have donated all of my pants and shorts to charity since I never want to experience ever again wearing a garment with a crotch seam. I have forgotten what it feels like wearing pants or shorts. I have received compliments mostly from women from Russia to Peru to Alaska to Australia. Just manly courage, John, and a totally masculine attitude. Break out of your fashion prison. Miniskirts are the best way to achieve comfort.

John from UK on May 21, 2018:

Well done, kaf9282 - all luck of the draw, I suppose. Did you stick to cities on your tour?

kaf9292 on May 20, 2018:

I can't understand John's comment since I have worn miniskirts all across Europe. Most recently for two weeks on a land tour around Ireland and Northern Ireland. No adverse reactions whatsoever.

John from UK on May 20, 2018:

I am a male with nice legs, and I love the feeling of freedom that comes with wearing a short skirt. But the British are so uptight and judgmental about other people's business, that I dare not wear them in my home town.

Zach on May 19, 2018:

Nice “reasons”, it’s obvious you all are thots trying to make guys get a boner, girls do it at my school all the time, it’s gets really old when you guys think you do it for other reasons....wear it appropriately you thots

Krystal on April 08, 2018:

I hate to wear Uniforms next year for school and they are making the girl wear mini skirts

Gsd on February 25, 2018:

It’s individual’s choice. But in my opinion, it’s because of male dominance and it was forced when it all began, but Now it became fashion. Tell me, why men dont wearing skirts or clothes which were meant for women. Why we see them differently if they wore one. Why it was considered disgraceful for a man to wear women’s clothing. I heard somewhere there that women weren’t allowed to wore men’s clothing because otherwise they will took over the world. The job which was forced on women, was to carry child and please men in whatever way they want. What was need at that time, now became fashion.

Patagoniakid on February 21, 2018:

After several years of wearing various mini / micro mini skirts I can definitely say a short skirt is more comfortable than any type of shorts. Especially for males... No frigging crotch binding inseams, cooler than shorts, and if really short freedom of movement is outstanding.

I see practicality is the issue not some fettish, or sexual turn on, nor cross dressing. Men will have the exact same issues as women have in a short skirt and undies / panties eliminate the problem. (the goods are covered so nothing to see. You see more and in detail at the beach and no one cares).

Short skirts are really comfortable for driving long distances and when sitting. Better than anything else. (Be cCareful of what you sit on of course)

John from UK on February 21, 2018:

Agreed - I love getting a tan on all of each of my legs, not just the bit below the knees, as is the case with men's shorts - way too baggy for me.

n0heq@arrl.net on February 20, 2018:

May I offer a different perspective? Both men and women who take care of their bodies may have beautiful legs; however, that has nothing to do the reasons that I wear miniskirts. Freedom of movement is my reason as is the ability to get a great suntan over almost all of my legs.

Mbalyenhle Sogar on February 19, 2018:

i think girls wear shorts skirt because they know that they have beautiful legs so what is the use of hiding them. Most of males think that we as girls we wear shorts because we want to attract them, nah they are mistaken we don`t even care about them

n0heq@arrl.net on February 17, 2018:

Remember that women had lots of negative reactions when they first started wearing trousers, pants or shorts in public. Women did not wimp out by returning to skirts or dresses. Men should act like men with the determination to make their own decisions. We don't need our neighbor's permission to choose our daily attire. Some people simply resist any form of change since it takes them out of their comfort zone. Men can and should control their own bodies.

John from UK on February 16, 2018:

We need a revolution in society's attitudes, that will allow people to be themselves. I'd love to wear skirts all the time, at least in summer, but where I live (small town, very backward part of a conservative anyway country) that just wouldn't be tolerated. I have bought quite a few but can only wear when away in some place where nobody knows me. I get silly remarks just for wearing shorts, even got reported to my wife by a church member who had seen me in town and was disgusted!

John from UK on February 16, 2018:

I love wearing mini-skirts. I love the feeling of uncluttered freedom, and I've got nice legs despite being a man!

Patagoniakid on July 04, 2017:

Simone's article "Five Reasons to Wear Short Skirts" was on the money! Good job.

I'm a guy yet late in life tried on a mini skirt on a hot summer day and was sold! I have no idea why men don't wear them. I can relate to and verify every point you made! I highly prefer a short stretch denim cargo mini skirt to shorts and don't care what others think. Hopefully some day soon men will have the freedom women have...

john on July 03, 2017:

I decided at 60 I no longer cared what people thought so I put on a blouse and a short skirt necklace

And no make up. Packed up my purse and went shopping. So what you may ask except that I am a a man and made no effort to "pass" as a women. I scared shi#"×÷÷! When I got out of my car I held my head high, and much to my surprise I had a great time what a rush and yes I did get compliments on my great legs!! Time is short but never miss a opportunity to make up for lost time !

Bhanu on November 29, 2016:

The same 'mobility ', comfort and happiness are also equally entitled on boys, why shouldn't they wear skin tight shorts to school and office?

Darlene on October 19, 2016:

I live for Summer, as in winter (even in So.California) the weather year around is condusive of short skirts (Like I mean way short short) or Denim SHORTY SHORTS. I usuallt get a 4" to 5" critch and roll them into a "Boy Cuff" as I look in the mirror it is so sexy and comfortable, as usually rolled cuffs keep the shorts from showing extra cheeks. I so dislike sleeze, but love my legs, so short shorts or micro/mini skirts are my life. I never wear long pants and never a skirt longer than just long enough to be safe. Yes the wind sometimes rules, then I have my shorty shorts (my dad calls Hot Pants) usually a low rise with a nice belt to cut my middle, as I am 6' tall.

I would like to start a I ONLY WEAR SHORT SHORTS (aka Hot Pants) or mini/micro skirts all year long. Summer, spring, fall or winter. I even wore my Hot Pants on a snow day in Big Bear to our cabin. Wow did I stay warm with all the attention. NO, I don't get cold, but lots of looks. I love the attention.

Anybody wanna start a I ONLY wear shorts & mini's CLUB, answer with a contact and we will be in touch and start something new. California is a great place to spawn this trend. Why cover up too soon. The fad will fade as time takes away my looks. I'm still in my 20's. When will I give up this silliness? Maybe NEVER if I look good, but I think 40. Darlene

Patagoniakid on August 05, 2016:

I would think that women would encourage men to wear short skirts! It would remove the uniqueness as related to women. Being "common" the sexiness as related to just women would fade. Women would better enjoy them in the presence of men if they also wore them like they do pants now.

Men can wear short (mini and micro mini) skirts with the same issues women have with short skirts...as long as you wear undies there is nothing to see so don't sweat an inadvertent flash now and then because they happen but who cares?... your covered!

Women should also realize it takes a sexually secure, non sexist, non homophobic guy to rock a short skirt...hummm.. perhaps they do know this because when wearing short skirts one gets more action than the jocks! Guys... start by wearing the micro mini's for running (they are the same length as men's running shorts at 10.5 to 12" long) and for hiking and lounging around the house...beats wearing pants for sure! Soon everyone will wear them!

David L Avery on August 05, 2016:

It is completely normal now for men and women. Some men still associate skirts and dresses with women although most women don't even wear them any longer, abandoning them for pants. Given that pants are certainly no longer an exclusive garment for men. I enjoy that freedom, strongly favoring skirts for their comfort and convenience. I'm thankful that women destroyed the gender barriers in clothing to give all of us guys the true freedom of choice.

Steve Harper on August 04, 2016:

You know I would love to see a movie made where it's in the future and everybody was wearing different type of clothes. Where it was completely normal for boys and men to be wearing skirts and dresses and still be wearing pants as well. Yes women and girls also kept wearing all their wonderful line of clothing they have been wearing. Yes just a movie where the dresses & skirts the guys were wearing were normal and no big thing.Everybody was just going about their business. To whatever plot the movie was about.

Johnb on July 06, 2016:

A nice dress or skirt on an attractive woman is very sexy although a nice dress on some women is also great. Sometimes a small amount of makeup aswell

Joanne on November 19, 2014:

Skirts are about femininity ! No matter what the length. When I put on a skirt, it makes me feel girly. Pants, jeans and shorts do not have that effect on me. I used to wear mini skirts all of the time and then maxi skirts took over my wardrobe, now I'm into the midi big time. Still wear jeans and shorts on occasion, but I prefer skirts or dresses especially on dates.

kaf9292 on July 17, 2014:

Short skirts are all about getting a nice nearly full-leg suntan while being as comfortable as possible without being completely nude. Real men also wear short skirts and have done so since the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Minifan on July 17, 2014:

Wearing short skirts, it ist the game of showing and hiding.

Impossible to turn away the eyes

Shorts are so vulgar

Long skirts are for fat old ladys

Trouthers for women who want to be a mas

Real Ladys were short skirt or dresses

Paige Desires from United States on March 02, 2014:

Great hub, I love your take on short skirts! Myself that's all I really love to wear..there so comfortable and unconfining. Thank you for sharing!

Veronica on October 20, 2013:

I don't like male attention if I wear a short skirt. Most men think you wear them because you desperately want sex and will do it with the next man who croses your path

Patagoniakid on June 27, 2013:

I'm a guy who never thought about skirts for decades then tried one on! Wow...guys you don't know what you are missing. A "Mini Cargo Skirt" has more pockets than shorts, has belt loops and is plain and they come in all sorts of styles and materials and best of all... no friggin crotch seams for the first time ever makes these special and unlike any other clothing guys have! Freedom of movement is astounding! No tubes of cloth over the legs!! With a little research I found that leading clothing designers say there are no reasons for men not to wear skirts and men have worn skirts far longer than women throughout time. Clearly better suited for a male than a female so society has it backwards!

I also found wearing a skirt is a "Chick Magnet".... guys you will get more action than the local jocks...guaranteed! They will find you intriguing and know you don't have the homophobia and sexual insecurity most men have. Anyone with any sense knows gays don't wear skirts (only on TV and movies for an effect).

It's time for men to break out of their 150 year old+ fashion and adopt something new like women did with their more open minds when they adopted men's pants in a big way in the 1960's.

Still don't think you can do it? Check these guys in skirts and note they still look like guys just as women in pants still look like women:

http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/2206467... They are obviously NOT cross dressing trying to look like women. Just guys enjoying skirts!

Vic Torino on March 22, 2013:

I wear short skirts all the time and people laugh at me! Of course, I am a guy.

kaf9292 on August 06, 2012:

It is not superficial. It is totally about comfort. You don't need a perfect figure since that exists only in the mind of the beholder as an abstract concept. In other words, no one can please millions of different expectations simultaneously. The notions of too fat, too old, too tall, etc. are fully subjective. Personally I have seen many who look much better, IMHO of course, in a short skirt than when wearing shorts or capri pants. As a married man I don't need anyone's permission except that of my wife to wear a miniskirt. When she is happy, so am I. I don't need a perfect body (whatever that really is) to go to a nude beach either!

Skirts come in a myriad of silhouettes, not all of which are form fitting. Just as with all clothing a skirt is selected based upon the weather & your planned activities. A short skirt is a clothing choice that doesn't require the approval of the entire universe!!!!!

BS on August 06, 2012:

I am surprisedthere isn't even one negative comment for such a superficial writying!

Short skirts - they are not only comfortable (compare with shorts please!) but also very revealing. They are usually tight and lift up, exposing your underwear. If you wear A-shaped one, be careful if its windy! Short skirts and exercise? For those who are desperate for male attention and want to appear ''sexy'' which is stupid. Aesthetic? Try it with thick fat legs and cellulite! I doubt it's very aesthetic. So ladies if you are not happy with your legs, why emphasize your worst part with skirts even more?

Simone, your arguments are very unconvincing it's strange that some people buy this nonsense!

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on May 08, 2012:

Well, there you go!

colin on May 07, 2012:

I think that women DO wear short skirts to show off their legs to men it is perfectly natural and part of the process of attracting a potential mate.Anyway all men love to see women in short skirts it is very sexy!!

Sexy Diva on April 15, 2012:

I'm a man that likes wearing short skirts in the summer a lot and in the winter when I go to the laundromat. when I wear short skirts in public I don't care what people think. I like wearing them more than pants because they are comfortable. People should understand that there are men that like to wear short skirts in public and they shouldn't be judged. I feel if you want to wear a short skirt it shouldn't matter how old you are and body type and if you are a male or female. Wear the short skirt if it make you happy and comfortable and do it because you want to and not for someone else. Women wear the short skirts because you want to and not for men. I support any man or female that likes wearing short skirts in any season like me.

Sexy Diva on April 14, 2012:

Don't be confused by the name but I'm a man that likes to wear short skirts every chace I get and I respect women more that wears short skirts since I been wearing them at least 6 years and I find the comfortable.

kaf9292 on March 14, 2012:

Short skirts are just plain comfortable since they can be worn without the restrictions placed upon wearing a loincloth. I wear them with sandals even in the winter. The compliments are just a bonus. Reasons to wear a short skirt are so numerous I prefer a brief listing of maybe five things that shouldn't be tried while wearing a short skirt: Gymnastics, roofing, changing a flat tire on a gravel road, sitting on a bar stool or climbing steep stairs while wearing a thong.

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on March 14, 2012:

Whaaa? Seriously kschimmel? They're selling short skirts at Sam's Club? Holy cow, that sure is a reason to avoid 'em! Oh wait... ooooh... you saw a short skirt disaster. Yeah, those can be painful to see. Like a train wreck. You don't want to see it, but you can't look away O_O. Thank goodness for those leggings.

kaf9292, that is just all colors of awesome. What you're describing sounds much like the ever-popular beloved Utilikilt- worn by many a proud San Franciscan.

kaf9292 on March 04, 2012:

Comfort is what got me hooked. After many years of believing that I couldn't wear a skirt just because I am a man I tried it upon a dare from my daughter. With the blessing of a wife who wears pants, skirts or dresses, I too joined the world of 21st Century equality. It is the comfort factor. Yes, lots of pockets, big belt loops & a coordinated selection of shirts & shoes lets me blend into my surroundings. After exercising my new clothing freedom that has been enjoyed for decades by women, I have donated all of my pants & jeans to charity with some even going to my same-sized female relatives. It is a decision that I am happy to have made 15 years ago. I am just a man who still looks very masculine but also a man who isn't adjusting those irritating seams any longer.

Kimberly Schimmel from North Carolina, USA on February 28, 2012:

I saw a short skirt at Sam's Club today that was a reason NOT to wear one, though. If you have an ample behind, a skirt that just barely covers the fanny is not flattering. I do appreciate that this unknown person was wearing leggings under said skirt--it would have been far worse with a thong.

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on February 28, 2012:

Though I've never seen anything result from short skirts on a windy day - I've always EXPECTED to see people slip up, but the idea of windy days resulting in any real entertainment is still an unproven myth in my world. Guess you've got a sharper eye than I do =_=

Knightheart from MIssouri, USA on May 04, 2011:

Hi Simone!

One more reason for short skirts is that most men just LOVE them, especially on those windy days!! ROFLOL

melodyandes on May 04, 2011:

Hahaha, Thanks for this.

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on May 02, 2011:

Hurrah! Happy shortskirting, brit8741!

brit8741 on May 01, 2011:

I'm convinced, and now I have an urge to go buy a few short skirts. :)

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on April 30, 2011:

So true, rebekahELLE! And they are so pleasingly easy to put on. Hehee thanks for stopping by the Hub!

rebekahELLE from Tampa Bay on April 30, 2011:

Nothing more fun than wearing short skirts, especially if you're tall and slender! I used to wear them often, but now the length is a bit longer. I love the line about shorts skirts being exceedingly easy to put on! Your hubs are always so much fun to read. OOH LA LA!

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on April 29, 2011:

Yes!!! Kilts FTW!!!!

Winsome from Southern California by way of Texas on April 29, 2011:

Well argued SS, I guess I have to dig out my kilt. =:)

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on April 29, 2011:

Rock on, jorja kick! I aspire to your awesomeness!

jorja kick from southeast georgia on April 29, 2011:

Great Hub...and I am a fan of short skirts..

woo hoo...even at 55..

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on April 28, 2011:

The important thing, Peggy W, is that you HAVE been there and done that! I know I won't always be wearing short skirts, but I'm glad that I'm doing it for at least a short time. It's a fun experience.

I'm sorry to hear that your short skirt won't see the light of day, QudsiaP1, because I'm sure you'd rock it well, but I'm still really glad you have it!

And LOL quicksand.

And brava, Amy Becherer! You're obviously a pro!!! I hope I might wear short skirts half as well as you do. And you're so right- they're not for anyone else but the wearer. And it's amazing how much positivity they can bring about!

Hmm- you make a good point about the upsides of ditching short skirts to save male pride, ahostagesituation. No guy has ever cared enough about me to be jealous, so I've never been in a position to consider not flaunting the short skirt look. I might change my ways if someone actually cared. Or not. We'll see! But I can totally understand how it is rather like a compliment. And why someone NOT caring might be a bit insulting.

I'm glad you've held on to some of your skirts, thoughtforce. Even if pants are the norm, it's nice to mix things up from time to time!

And that's a pity, BigSeanR. Skirts are so very refreshing. Perhaps someday the manskirt will ACTUALLY make a REAL comeback. Hehee.

Sean Reddish from Albany, GA on April 28, 2011:

Good advice but it's not likely that I'll be wearing short skirts.

Christina Lornemark from Sweden on April 28, 2011:

How great of you to write an article for the benefit of the skirt! I like skirts but I don’t wear mini skirts any more :) Instead I prefer them a little bit longer but yet not a long skirt. During many years I didn’t wear pants or jeans, I just had them when I worked in the garden! Then the pants started to sneak up on me and now I am afraid they have more or less won the battle :) I am used to them now and skirts do not fit my job either so I can only have them during my free time. But the skirts are still there, ready to wear! And I do agree, women do not wear skirts for the sake of men :) Thanks for the great read, and the inspiration. Keep on wearing those mini skirts! Tina

Mrs Roussou on April 28, 2011:

Simone, I know few things more useless than male pride, but those territorial instincts run pretty deep. I decided a while back that I prefer it that way. Would you want your guy to take the position, "oh sure, man, say what you want to her...hell, put your hands on her if you want. Have at it, buddy!" I don't know too many non-bisexual guys who could handle that. I am 100 percent sure I would not want that, despite how annoying male pride can be. But since you already rock a lot of mini skirts, it would be a shame to throw them out...;-).

quicksand on April 28, 2011:

Thanks Simone, I simply love illustrated stories! I am eagerly looking forward to part2! :)

Amy Becherer from St. Louis, MO on April 28, 2011:

I am beyond the average short skirt wearing age, and I plan on continuing. I'll know when to stop. At the workplace, before I got laid off, I stopped traffic on my breaks. At my age, you bet I was flattered! So, although I got a lot of attention from predominently men, women came up to me and conmplimented me regularly, too. Ultimately, everyone likes positive, upbeat encounters. I like the positive attention, smiles, and power of turning heads. I wear them for me! This was a fun read based on true facts!

QudsiaP1 on April 28, 2011:

I have inexplicably fallen in love with you for explaining why must short skirts gain vast approval. Now only if I could convince the people of my country!

Bah, wearing jeans and long skirts give me the drooled lace stares so well if I were to wear a short skirt anywhere outside the diameter of my room, well let us just say it would be quite a unique experience. So for now I prance around in my room wearing my favourite short skirt, which much to the dismay of my beloved, will never really grace the day of light.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on April 27, 2011:

Been there...done that! No longer have the body type to pull it off, but it was fun although I never wore the mini versions. As to sitting in them...THAT is an art! :)

Simone Haruko Smith (author) from San Francisco on April 27, 2011:

Hahaa, I'm sure short skirts abound in Brazil, Ancillotti! Lucky you! And hey, at least you've got a girlfriend who can wear them well, right? Other men will just be jealous of YOU for having such a cool girlfriend!

Mm- good point ahostagesituation. I suppose since I have never been in a serious relationship, I've never had a fight about short skirts, but I can see how they might be an issue.... though I'd be hard pressed to give miniskirts up just for a guy's pride!

And hahaha Hyphenbird - I bet you can STILL rock short skirts! But hey- even that you wore them when you really felt like it means you know how to wear them well!

Now quicksand, I find philosophy much more fun than photos. Besides, I'm lazy. But I'll be sure to include more photos in my next short skirt Hub ;)

And I'm glad to have added to your girl-in-short-skirt-appreciation, Rgerard! Those girls sure know what they're doing, believe me.

There's no CHANCE that you learned too much from this Hub, PETER LUMETTA, I'm only getting STARTED on the subject!

I'm glad you maximized your short skirt opportunity Stephanie Henkel - I hope every girl does! I've heard about regrets on all sorts of things, but never have I heard a woman express anything aside from nostalgia for the short skirts she once wore.

And thanks for reading stefancando - just doing my civic duty ;)

DRAT, lukecore! I missed the trend by just four years!!! I'm never good with these things =___=

I'm with you on jeans getting boring, M. Everest. But thankfully there are skirts to flatter all sorts of bodies, styles, climates, and situations!

Thanks for reading, A.A. Zavala.

And you know it's true, Andrew Gubb! And if one has an excuse to wear loin cloths, one ought not to pass it up!

Andrew Gubb from Barcelona, Spain on April 27, 2011:

"In all honesty, they are the closest modern alternative to loin cloths"

Loved this bit! :)

Augustine A Zavala from Texas on April 27, 2011:

You had me at short skirts. Thank you for sharing.

M. Everest from Northern California on April 27, 2011:

Sigh. My legs just aren't what they used to be! But I will definitely try to wear more skirts now, period. Because jeans are just getting boring! Great hub! ;)

Luke Chant from Manchester on April 27, 2011:

Giant goose costume you say? Vogue says that's the in style for this summer!

stefancando from Iasi on April 27, 2011:

These is really nice :) Thanks for telling it as it is for us guys to understand.

Stephanie Henkel from USA on April 27, 2011:

I love it!!! Yes, wear short skirts while you still can, ladies! As you point out, time is fleeting, and we should enjoy wearing short skirts while we can. I don't regret a moment of it (especially since my time is past...) Great hub, Simone!

PETER LUMETTA from KENAI, ALAKSA on April 27, 2011:

See your never to old to learn something new. Maybe I learned more than I wanted to but what the heck. Good HUB

Peter

Rgerard from Santa Barbara, California by way of Los Angeles on April 26, 2011:

This was very insightful. The next time I see a girl in a short skirt (probably tomorrow) not only will I appreciate her beauty (I always do) but I will also take into consideration all the great things she can do in that short skirt! ;)

quicksand on April 26, 2011:

More pix please!

Brenda Barnes from America-Broken But Still Beautiful on April 26, 2011:

I used to wear short skirts unti I got old and fat. They made my very short legs look longer. I love this Hub.

Mrs Roussou on April 26, 2011:

I'm laughing out loud at short skirts as "modern alternative to loin cloth." I definitely agree that women do not necessarily wear a short skirt for men...of course not. Unfortunately though, many a straight man did not get that memo. Lots of short skirts are more casual than sexy, but a short skirt can be an argument waiting to happen in a relationship. Who knows? Either way, I love this hub, and I love the skirts in this hub!

Ancillotti from Brasil, Vitoria - ES on April 26, 2011:

Hello, Simon! Although I liked the Hub, I confess I am not a fan of my girlfriend using short skirt. Although her stay beautiful hilltop lot of jealous of him looking man! I hope she does not read your Hub and go shopping to use more short skirts because here in Brazil it is very easy to find! Thanks!
