Prepare to Ski Without Looking Like You Expect a Flood

Any tall person can tell you that finding ski pants that come in long lengths is hard. That is particularly frustrating since fit is important when it comes to buying technical gear like ski pants.

Expensive performance garments like snow pants or snowboarding pants simply do not work the way they should if they do not have a proper fit.

Happily, some snow pants manufacturers make ski and snowboard pants in long lengths. It's useful to know the brands that specialize in long lengths so that you can ask for them at your local sports store, or search online by brand to find the long length ski pants that are the right fit for your body and for your budget.

Brands That Make Long Ski Pants for Men

Here is a list of some of the winter sportswear companies that make long snow pants and snowboarding gear for big and tall men. Some of these simply make extra long lengths in traditional waist sizes while others make pants that are both longer and bigger around the waist:

  • The North Face
  • Arc'Teryx
  • Mountain Hardwear
  • Descente
  • Marmot
  • Patagonia

Brands That Make Women's Snow Pants in Long Lengths

It's easier to find women's ski pants in long lengths than it is to find petite length snow pants for women. Here are some of the brands that make ski pants in extra long lengths for taller women. As with men, most of these brands make slim-fitting long length ski pants in traditional pants sizes, while others make plus-sized skiwear that also fit long legs:

  • North Face
  • Mountain Hardwear
  • Arc'Teryx
  • Bogner
  • Nils
  • Athleta (owned by Gap, Inc.)
  • Marmot
  • Burton (Burton pants tend to be on the longer side without having a specific Tall size)

Why Proper Fit Matters in Performance Gear

Finding proper fitting ski clothes and snowboarding trousers is more than a matter of vanity and aesthetics.

One major problem of too-short skiing pants or snowboarding bottoms is that the articulated knees hit the wearer too high up the leg on the thigh. That means that expensive softshell or hardshell fabric that is supposed to bend with you as you bend your knees, giving you greater mobility and comfort, don't bend with you.

Another major issue when ski pants are too short is that the gaiters, which are meant to keep snow out of your ski boot or snowboard boot, slip up and therefore fail at keeping your sock dry. A wet ski sock can cause serious problems. At the worst, skiing with wet long underwear or socks will make you cold. At worst, you could develop a more serious problem like hypothermia.
