Tipping Lash Technicians

If you are heading to an eyelash appointment, you rely on an eyelash technician to deliver a stunning end result. When you sit down to go through the process, though, it is very important that you understand the complexity of the process.

Many who have never carried out an eyelash cosmetic adjustment will likely not realize just how much work and effort go into this process. As such, at the end of your service, it is likely that you should look to tip your technician. Are you wondering, though, how much to tip last tech specialists?

Then you are not alone. We have put together a simple explanation below to help you get a rough idea of how much you should tip for eyelash tech. This should help you to work out when (or if) you should go ahead with the tipping process.

The Cost of Eyelash Techniques Can Be a Surprise

One of the many reasons someone might choose not to leave a tip for their eyelash technician is the cost. These are not cheap processes, and some see them as overpriced for what they actually get back in return. However, this salon service comes with a huge amount of training and time put in by the specialist providing the service.

While you might not fully appreciate the challenge of the task itself, you can appreciate the results it creates. With that in mind, you should always feel comfortable leaving a tip for the person carrying out your service.

You might be surprised at the cost of the treatment, and thus you might begrudge paying a bit extra on top in terms of a tip. However, we highly recommend that you look to add on a tip to any eyelash service that you undergo.

Given you might live in a place where tipping is not really a cultural ‘thing,’ you might assume that you can simply ignore any requests for a tip. And while you could, it is not something that we would really recommend. When you are looking to make a choice on tipping for a specialist service, you should always look to go on the side of leaving a tip.

You might think the price overall is expensive, but this is a service that you have chosen to receive. The least you can do is give a little back to the individual delivering your service.

How Much to Tip Lash Tech Specialists

There is no right or wrong answer, per se, but if you do choose to go down the route of tipping, then the industry standard is set in stone. For the most part, you should be looking at something in the region 20% to 25% of the cost of the service itself. You might balk at that, but it’s a fair rate to add on – especially given most salons are always happy to go the extra mile even for the most minuscule of adjustments.

Try and keep in mind that while every specialist will do their best to leave a quality finish, a tip builds a personal rapport. Just as we all do, those who feel a personal connection with you are far more likely to give it that extra 5% in terms of effort. It also makes it easier to ask for more minor changes and adjustments if you feel like something was not quite right with the eyelash tech.

With that in mind, you should always look to add on around 20 to 25% of your cost of the process. That is a good enough tip to be received in glowingly positive terms by the specialist. It will also ensure that you are giving over a good enough tip to help provide the specialist with even more incentive to deliver an A+ service in the future.

If you intend to go for eyelash tech, then you should definitely be prepared to tip. Cosmetic changes will often cost you a fair amount when it comes to things like tipping, so just try to keep that in mind as you go about the tipping process overall. The sooner you understand this, the less likely you are to be shocked when you are asked to pay a little extra on top as a tip.

If you want to look good, then you often need to pay for it. A little tip on top of your initial cost, then, makes a very wise choice indeed to ensure you get the best quality and end result.

This process takes a lot of time and dedication.

Alternatives to Tipping

Remember that tipping doesn't have to be monetary necessarily. You can provide a gift as an appreciation of your thanks, whether it is a bottle of wine or some chocolates. Sometimes even a written letter or card is all that is needed to show your appreciation. As the saying goes, it's the thought that counts.

Ultimately, though it is down to you as to whether you want to tip or not, there's no pressure either way. If you feel that your lash tech has done a good job and they have gone above and beyond for you to make sure that you're happy with the service that you got, then that's as good a reason as any. Whether it's a professional or even personal reason that you want to tip, that's up to you. As we say, usually, you add around 20% to a tip. Still, unlike when you go to a restaurant or even have a taxi lift, there's not generally a societal and cultural expectation that you do provide a tip. If you do offer a tip, you're likely to be one of only a few of their clientele that does.

Let us know if you tip your lash technician, and if so, how much and why? Do you provide any other alternative gifts, or is it something you just don't do? We'd love to hear more, and you can share your thoughts in the comments section below; we're looking forward to hearing it.

Find out right here in this simple to follow guide on cleaning magnetic lashes.

How to Clean Magnetic Lashes

If you own a pair of magnetic lashes, then you want to know how to make them last. These expensive cosmetic accessories can be pretty hard to keep in good condition if you do not properly care for them.

Lashes are a vital part of the modern makeup industry, and many people have grown accustomed to attaching their own lashes. This is a common practice, as some see it as more cost-effective than going to eyelash appointments. However, if you are looking to buy magnetic lashes, then you want to know how to properly keep them in good condition.

Once you understand the cleaning process, it is pretty easy to repeat! For now, though, owners of a magnetic lashes set should focus on learning the basics of cleaning.

Let’s take a look at the easiest solutions to wind up with clean magnetic lashes. The solution is quite simple, but actually putting it into practice can be a surprisingly touch challenge overall.

Simple DIY Eyelash Cleaning Method

Typically, there are two commonly used methods to clean up eyelashes. One of the hardest challenges you might face when choosing is to decide on what method to try out. Typically, though, you can clean your magnetic lashes with a few simple products from around your house.

Materials Needed

 • Strong eye makeup remover
 • 90% rubbing alcohol
 • Cotton buds
 • A cotton swab
 • A set of tweezers

Cleaning Steps

Step 1: Remove the Lashes

To get started, you need to first remove your magnetic eyelashes. To most effectively remove your magnetic lashes, we recommend you use the lash band. Simply tug on the corner of this lightly; never grab! Be sure that you are careful as you remove the lashes as you could damage them otherwise.

Step Two: Grab the Makeup Remover

Now, you should remove your magnetic lashes and then set them down somewhere safe. Before you do anything else, though, make sure you clean the lashes to get rid of any eyeliner or any residue from your makeup. This is most effectively done by taking the cotton pad mentioned above and soaking it with the eye makeup remover. Make sure you use eye makeup remover, not nail polish remover.

Also, ensure that it is not an oil-based eye makeup remover!

Once you have soaked the cotton pad, you should rub down the eyelashes with the cotton pad.

Step Three: Repeat

Do this a few times to help get rid of any residue left over. Try and use as little pressure as you can, as excessive strength could damage and ruin the look of your lashes. If you take it slow, though, it will be fixed with minimal stress.

That's It!

Once you have done this, you should now have a set of cleaned-up magnetic lashes. However, you still need to actually clean the magnets within the lashes.

How to Clean the Magnets in Your Magnetic Lashes

If you want to ensure longevity, you must also pay attention to the magnets within the product. Many do not realize how important it is also to clean the magnets. This requires very specific, very minuscule pressure. Do everything you can to remove all eyeliner from the magnet, avoiding any scratches as you work your way around the magnet.

Use Rubbing Alcohol!

If you wish to remove the magnet resid, you should use the 90% rubbing alcohol we spoke of earlier. Take the swab that was listed earlier and begin to slowly rub the strip. Again, be careful as excessive pressure could distort or even pull off the lashes from where they are being stored.

This will ensure that you are left with a set of magnetic lashes that are free from the residue and build-up that can cause them to stop working to the same level as before. If you do this, then you should make sure that you have totally removed all signs of the make-up on your magnetic lashes.

This can take a bit of time, so be prepared to be patient and to take your time.

Cleaning Up and Finalising Your Magnetic Lashes

Once you have finished the cleaning process as listed above, you should now take the time to dry off your magnetic lashes properly.

This can be done simply by putting them onto a towel and leaving them to try. You might wish to try and speed up the process, but we recommend that you let them dry naturally to avoid potential damage being done to the lashes in the first place.

Take your time when cleaning your magnetic lashes, and you can find that they will be in useable condition for a long time to come. Simply follow along with the above, and those magnetic lashes should be good for a few nights out yet!

I love coming up with homemade, all-natural skincare recipes and sharing them with others.

Get longer, fuller lashes with my tips below.

author

How to Make Your Eyelashes Longer

I have been experimenting with eyelash serums and mascaras for a couple of years now, trying to find what combination works best to grow my lashes naturally. Big, long, curly lashes are definitely in right now, but extensions are costly and require upkeep every six weeks. With a few easy tricks, you can get the look without spending $100!

How to Grow Longer Lashes With Eyelash Serums

Growth serums are a godsend, and yes, they can work! I started with one that kept popping up on my Instagram advertisements - ForLash Eyelash Serum. I have been using this one on and off for over a year now and love the results. Generally speaking, eyelash serums work by conditioning and strengthening individual lashes.

Latisse

That being said, there’s only one serum that is proven to extend the growth period of lashes—Latisse. Latisse is FDA-approved but requires a prescription. Basically, each individual eyelash goes through a growth cycle. The Latisse serum has been proven to prolong the growth period of the lash before it is dormant for several weeks and eventually falls out. If you’d like to try this one out, ask your dermatologist!

OTC Lash Serums

Over-the-counter serums have different ingredients, one of which is peptides. These coat the lash and make it more flexible, therefore less likely to break. I think that using over-the-counter serums is still beneficial, even if they're not clinically proven to grow your lashes. If nothing else, they will condition and make your eyelashes look and feel thicker.

A Note on Biotin for Hair Growth

Many serums or growth products will boast that they contain biotin, a vitamin that promotes keratin production for hair and nails. There are a couple of problems with this. First, biotin must be consumed in order to be effective. Second, while biotin is in many hair/skin/nail products, there isn’t a whole lot of evidence that it actually makes hair grow faster. Typically, it will be most beneficial for people who are biotin-deficient.

Castor Oil for Eyelash Growth

Many tout the use of castor oil for eyelash growth. There have not been any scientific studies on this specifically, but there have been studies that ricinoleic acid, which makes up around 90% of castor oil, can prevent hair loss.

Note: Some people have allergic reactions to castor oil, so before trying this on your eyes, test a small amount on another part of your body, like your forearm.

How to Use Castor Oil For Eyelash Growth

 1. Clean eyelashes and remove all makeup before going to bed.
 2. Dip a cotton swab in 100% pure castor oil.
 3. Carefully apply the castor oil to the top of your eyelash line. Avoid getting this product in your eyes! If it does cause irritation, gently rinse your eyes out with water.
 4. Wash the oil off in the morning with a facial cleanser.

Use an Eyelash Curler

This won’t make your eyelashes longer, but it will certainly help them to appear that way! When you use an eyelash curler, you make them curl up more and become more visible instead of just sticking straight out. Plus, curlers are super inexpensive and can be found at pretty much any drugstore. Use the curler as close to the roots of your eyelashes as possible, holding for at least 10 seconds. Then, apply your mascara on top.

Left is before curling and mascara; right is after.

author

Mascara Tips for Longer-Looking Eyelashes

Of course, certain types of mascara and specific application techniques can also make your eyelashes appear longer.

 • Try an eyelash primer first. Applying an eyelash primer before mascara can help make your lashes appear thicker.
 • Use a small wand. The precision with a smaller wand can help define individual lashes and prevent clumping.
 • Apply multiple layers. Going over in a second layer with a thicker mascara and brush can add volume and length.
 • Wiggle the brush from left to right at the roots, then pull it up through the rest of the lashes. Wiggling it a bit at the roots helps separate the lashes and keeps them from clumping up together.

author

Use a Combination of Methods

There are several different ways you can make your eyelashes grow longer, or even just appear to be longer and fuller. I typically go for a combination of the two, using a serum daily to condition, paired with an eyelash curler and my favorite mascara (Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extension Mascara). This creates such a dramatic effect, as you can see below! These tricks help me to get the lash extension look, without spending the money.

A must-read before buying it!

Amber is a web writer whose articles focus on beauty, skincare, health, and wellness!

Is this palette worth the hype and money?

Lovecraft Beauty: Warm Rituals Eyeshadow Palette Review

Lovecraft Beauty is a company with a great concept. They stand for Love+Craft+Beauty.

Their motto is to love yourself, love your craft and love your beauty. They aim to create makeup that helps every person express themselves and their individuality.

With a belief like that, it’s understandable why everyone has tried this makeup at least once. However, there are quite a few things about their eyeshadow palettes that you need to keep in mind before you pay almost $30 for one eyeshadow palette.

Lovecraft Beauty Warm Rituals Eyeshadow Palette Swatches

The colors are warm tones of cream, brown, orange, and green. The three brown shades are matte formulas. The others are shimmery, especially the orange. A unique combination of fall colors makes this eyeshadow perfect for those with brown eyes!

Warm Rituals Pros Vs. Cons

On the surface, this eyeshadow palette looks like a dream come true. I have hazel eyes, and these shades were the perfect colors. Lovecraft Beauty was designed by a professional makeup artist, so you instantly assume that it’s going to live up to your expectations. However, there were a few areas where it fell short.

Pros

No Smudging or Creasing

While the look seems to fade away as the day goes on, it’s not going to look bad. The eyeshadow does not crease in the center of your eyelid. It also won’t smudge across your face due to the humidity that summer brings. If you can figure out a way to make it stay all day, this eyeshadow can become one of your favorite products.

Cruelty-Free

This company advertises that they do not test their products on animals. When you pick up one of these eyeshadow palettes for brown eyes, you know that you’re not contributing to animals being used to make sure that makeup products are safe.

Great for One Color Looks

While this eyeshadow is horrible at blending, that doesn’t matter if you only wear one color of eyeshadow. You can create a look by swiping a chocolatey brown across your eyelid with some eyeliner and be done for the morning! That makes this a great beginner eyeshadow palette.

Cons

The Shades Are Not Very Pigmented

While the eyeshadow colors look exceptional in the palette, they are not highly pigmented once you put them on. This works well for people that might want a more neutral look with shades of brown. However, it’s not going to be your favorite palette if you prefer to add a pop of color to your eyelids, as most of us do.

Poor Staying Power

I’ve tried to wear this eyeshadow three ways. First, I just wore the eyeshadow. It didn’t last all day. Unfortunately, I got similar results when using primer and my Urban Decay setting spray. To enjoy a look all day, you’ll need to reapply it during your lunch hour.

This eyeshadow also wipes off relatively easily with water. Wearing this formula in the rain, during high humidity, or any time aside from cooler Fall weather is not a good idea.

Doesn’t Blend Well

When trying to pull off the perfect smokey eye, you’re going to run into problems when using this formula. The colors muddy together to form almost a new shade instead of blending smoothly together for a seamless eyeshadow look. Overall, that was very disappointing.

Matte Formula Is Powdery

The matte formula used is a bit powdery. It doesn’t go on as smoothly as the shimmer or glitter formulas do. In the picture above of Lovecraft Beauty Warm Rituals swatches, you can see that the matte formulas have chunks of powder. This is also how it goes on your eyelids. This can be a problem, especially if you prefer cream eyeshadows.

The Price

Paying almost $30 for an eyeshadow palette with six colors that do not stay, and do not blend well, is not going to happen for me. I simply can not justify spending that much on this product from Lovecraft cosmetics when Morphe is a fraction of the price and blends beautifully. (Morphe palettes cost approximately the same but include so many colors that you get a fantastic deal every time.)

Who Is Lovecraft Beauty Warm Rituals Eyeshadow Palette For?

While this isn’t my favorite palette, there are a few people that it will work well for. If you’re interested in trying it out, keep these things in mind before adding it to your cart.

Does Not Look Well With Faces That Have Red Undertones

If you have red undertones, even if they are mild, the shimmer colors can leave you looking more like a clown, thanks to your rosy cheeks. In order to make this eyeshadow palette work, you will need to cover the red undertones with foundation before applying.

Makeup Artists Will Be Frustrated

Blending eyeshadow to create an amazing look is one of the fun things about being a makeup artist. You can create unique looks and make someone’s day with eyes that pop. Because this eyeshadow doesn’t blend well, it’s not a great tool to have.

Beginners Will Love It

Using this eyeshadow palette instantly reminds me of the way that I put on eyeshadow as a beginner. In the beginning, I used only one color. Blending was a foreign concept to me. If you know anyone just beginning to wear makeup, they’ll appreciate the Lovecraft Beauty Warm Rituals eyeshadow palette.

Worth It?

The Lovecraft Beauty Warm Rituals eyeshadow palette has beautiful colors that work well with brown or hazel eyes.

The formula leaves a bit to be desired, though. You simply cannot pull off a lot of eyeshadow looks with it.

However, if you’re a fan of using a single color of eyeshadow, this could easily be the palette for you.

<![CDATA[The Best Vegan Mascara: Victoria Beckham Future Lash]]>https://bellatory.com/makeup/The-Best-Vegan-Mascara-Victoria-Beckham-Future-Lashhttps://bellatory.com/makeup/The-Best-Vegan-Mascara-Victoria-Beckham-Future-LashThu, 13 May 2021 23:51:17 GMTVictoria Beckham Future Lash Mascara review. Does this vegan mascara live up to the hype and the standard that we've come to expect from Victoria Beckham?

Amber has written about fashion and design, beauty, and skin care for several years.

Victoria Beckham Future Lash ($28)

Victoria Beckham Future Lash vegan mascara is hands-down one of the best smudge-proof mascaras that I’ve tried so far. It definitely lived up to my expectations, although there are a couple of downsides that you’ll need to keep in mind before picking up a tube for yourself.

Victoria Beckham has brought the wonderful things that we all adore about luxury makeup brands into the world of vegan, clean beauty. There are so many positive things about this cruelty-free mascara that it was hard not to instantly try it when I got it in my Ipsy bag.

Pros

Vegan Mascara

After realizing that I have a gluten intolerance, I was unwillingly thrown into the world of gluten-free foods. This has quickly transpired into a profound interest in vegan things, including vegan mascara. Animals that are raised so that we can use them for products, including cosmetics, contribute damage to the Earth at a faster rate than humans via water consumption, etc., so it’s nice to know that this product is vegan.

Cruelty-Free Mascara

When a product is advertised as cruelty-free, it means that it is not tested on animals. Although all makeup products aren’t cruelty-free, it’s great knowing that this product from Victoria Beckham is. If you’re on the hunt for cruelty-free mascara, this one is worth looking into.

Smudge-Proof Mascara

This product advertises that it’s smudge-proof, and it definitely is! I wore it for an entire day, and it stayed perfectly in place. It dries quickly, so you don’t have to worry about smudging because it’s still wet when applying other makeup around your eye.

The Applicator Makes Application Easy and Mess-Free

While applicators with large, thick bristles have dominated the mascara industry for decades, smaller brushes like this one definitely have their benefits. Because the bristles are small, it doesn’t load too much product on the brush. You won’t have to worry about accidentally getting mascara on your upper or lower lid during application. Applying this cruelty-free mascara is as simple as pulling the applicator out of the tube and brushing it along your eyelashes.

Looks Natural

The perfect application wand combined with a smooth, non-clumping formula can help you have lashes that look naturally darker. Because the formula does not have a thick coating, you don’t have to worry about lashes sticking together or looking fake. They aren’t so crunchy that you’ll spend the day fearing they are going to break in half, either. Instead, you get slightly darker, fluttering eyelashes with one swipe of this vegan mascara.

Cons

Not Waterproof

While there are plenty of vegan mascara brands on the market with waterproof mascara, this is not one of them. While it will survive in a slight drizzle, this isn’t a mascara to wear during a downpour or day at the beach.

Those of you that are looking for a vegan mascara that is also waterproof should check out:

 • Eyeko Beach Waterproof Mascara (available at Ulta)
 • Thrive Causemetics (available on their website)
 • KUSH Waterproof Mascara by Milk Makeup (available at Sephora)

These are all exceptional brands that offer vegan mascara. The above products will survive a day at the beach, too!

Although this can be a huge downside to this cruelty-free mascara during the day, it’s a blessing when it is time to remove the mascara. You can easily wipe your eyelashes with water, and trust that it comes right off.

Look how amazing that applicator is!

Should You Buy It?

Yes! I love the mascara minus the fact that it’s not waterproof. It’s easy to apply, simple to remove, and gives you a naturally flawless look that won’t smudge until you’re ready to wipe it away. The price for the mascara is affordable and well worth it for a vegan mascara like this one.

About the Company

Those who have not heard of Victoria Beckham might recognize her as Posh Spice. Beckham was branded as the most stylish member of the girl group Spice Girls in the 90’s. Long after songs like “Wannabe” and “Who Do You Think You Are” stopped blaring on the radio, Beckham took her career a step further by launching her own clothing line. She joined the cosmetics industry in 2019 with a company, Victoria Beckham Beauty, that managed to set itself away from the rest of the industry with a few features that fans have come to love.

Women Empowerment

While Beckham had collaborations with previous companies, such as Estee Lauder, this is her first makeup company and brand. She is the co-founder. Victoria Beckham Beauty was founded by both Beckham and Sarah Creal. They loved the idea of makeup that is created by women.

Clean Beauty

The cosmetics industry, and several other industries, continue to include ingredients in their products that are known to be harmful to humans and/or animals. For example, soda brands that have flame retardant in them. The high levels of arsenic and metals that were once found in baby foods. Cosmetics are not the exception.

Clean beauty products are free from these toxic ingredients. When we apply cosmetics to our face, our skin absorbs the ingredients through our pores. The fact that Victoria Beckham offers clean beauty products is one more thing that we love about them.

Vegan and Cruelty-Free

Although the company tends to focus more on having clean beauty products and being environmentally friendly, it’s definitely worth noting that most of the products are also vegan and cruelty-free. Even some of the waterproof products are!

Transparency

The company claims that they are transparent. You can see on each product description whether it is vegan and cruelty-free. Granted, no one is going to inform the public that they are testing products on animals. However, it’s worth noting that they include plenty of information in the product description to form your own opinion.

She has beautiful packaging too.

Victoria Beckham Beauty Prices

Future Lash Mascara is one of the most affordable products on the website. Other products are also seemingly affordable, such as the waterproof vegan eyeliner that you can pick up for under $30. However, before you fall in love with this brand, it’s worth noting that they get more expensive as you continue browsing. A matte bronzer brisk will cost you over $50, and lipsticks are almost $40. A single-pot eyeshadow is going to be closer to that $40 range as well. I love the brand and this mascara, but I’m not going to fill my vanity with it. Instead, I’ll enjoy a product on occasion. (I could get an entire palette from Tarte for less than what a single pot eyeshadow costs at Victoria Beckham Beauty.)

Where Can You Buy Victoria Beckham Beauty?

This line of beauty products, including skincare, can be found on the website www.VictoriaBeckhamBeauty.com. You can also find this line of products at your local Sephora, if they haven’t sold out already Bloomingdale’s and Estee Lauder carry them as well.

Amber is a web writer whose articles focus on beauty, skincare, health, and wellness!

About Face by Halsey

The About Face makeup line by Halsey was anticipated across the world. This singer is known for doing her own makeup looks for concerts. She even completed all of her own makeup looks using the About Face line for the launch videos and pictures! Halsey takes the definition of creativity to new heights, and her makeup brand did not disappoint.

Review of the About Face Eye Paint

The About Face eye paint is available as Matte Fluid Eye Paint. It’s only available in a matte finish. Each tube of eye paint is $24. According to the website, it’s a one swipe finish, thanks to the applicator. It’s also smudge-free, so you don’t have to worry about your makeup being a mess later on.

Pros

There are quite a few benefits to using About Face Eye Paint that make it well worth the price tag. The pros are:

 • Smudge-free
 • Dries quickly
 • Dries smooth
 • Very pigmented
 • A complete look in one eyeshadow
 • It doesn’t require a primer or setting spray to stay in place
 • Easy to remove

Cons

This eye paint comes with some serious benefits, but it also comes with a few downfalls.

 • Is not waterproof
 • The applicator can make getting a smooth line on your eyelid difficult
 • Limited eyeshadow looks

This eyeshadow can handle rough days. It can stand up to babies poking your eyelid because they are curious. It was designed with staying in place in mind.

Great for Minimalists Too

About Face is marketed as a great makeup for being creative, but that doesn’t mean that you have to be creative with five different eye paint colors. Instead, it can work for the minimalist, too. A quick swipe is all it takes for a complete eyeshadow look.

Not only is this ideal for the makeup minimalist, but it is also an exceptional product for those busy mornings. Full glam makeup looks are always hot, but eye paint will get you out the door in under a minute while still looking fabulous.

Easy to Remove at the End of the Day

To remove About Face Eye Paint, you simply wipe it off. It might take a couple of wipes with a makeup remover, but it comes off as effortlessly as it glides on. My Ipsy Face Cleansing wipes took this makeup off, and they don’t have the power to remove anything waterproof. That means that you could also use a damp rag with water.

About Face Eye Paint is Not Ideal for the Beach

While this eye paint can hold its own if you have to go somewhere in the rain, it’s not going to survive a day at the beach. Swimming is out of the question. Not only is swimming out of the question, but long walks in the rain are also not going to happen when you’re wearing this eye paint. Make sure that you keep your plans for the day and the weather in mind before putting it on.

Those that are looking for a waterproof eyeshadow can switch out their About Face Eye Paint for something else for the day. Tom Ford Emotionproof Eye Color is seriously pigmented so that you can wear a single eyeshadow color for a complete look just like About Face, but it’s going to stay in place when it's exposed to more than a little bit of water.

Opt for Powder or Cream Eyeshadow for More Looks

The one major downside that you’re going to notice about this eye paint is that it is not blendable. It dries so fast that completing an entire smokey eye is impossible. Aside from a quick eyeshadow topper or graphic eyeliner looks, you’re just too limited with eye paint.

Make sure to scrape the excess off the brush by sliding it along the opening of the tube as you take it out.

How to Apply About Face Eye Paint

When applying this eye paint, it’s important to remember that the brush is not like any other eyeshadow brush. Because of this, it holds onto too much product after initially taking it out of the tube. Make sure to scrape the excess off the brush by sliding it along the opening of the tube as you take it out.

After that, simply slide the brush along your eyelids. If you are a beginner, use a concealer brush before the product sets for a crisp, smooth eyeshadow line.

Use a Concealer Brush For a Crisp Line

The lip gloss style applicator that comes with the eye paint is great for making sure that you have plenty of product on the brush. It lets you paint your entire eye, or parts of your face, in one swift swipe. However, if you’re going for a basic eyeshadow look, you want it to look nice. Before the eyeshadow dries, use a small concealer brush to smooth out the rough line at the top of your eyelid.

About the Brand

About Face breaks the rules when it comes to makeup. Instead of focusing on perfection that the makeup industry bombards us with, the focus for this makeup is on the fun. After all, that’s why we all began playing with makeup when we were younger, right?

This is seen in the lack of precision tools designed for perfection that shoppers have become accustomed to and in the beautiful, bold colors. Halsey strongly feels that makeup helps you look cool; it’s never about being flawless. We are all imperfectly gorgeous.

No Sexism

The Halsey makeup line isn’t just for women. Instead, it’s for everyone that loves makeup! The website doesn’t use pronouns to describe their makeup as other brands do. Pictures on the website display every gender! About Face nailed being inclusive with their makeup line.

Great for Different Skin Colors

About Face doesn’t display just one skin tone on their page. Instead, you’ll notice a nice variety to show you that this makeup is designed for you, regardless of whether you have light skin or dark skin.

Vegan and Cruelty-Free

Halsey boasts that her products are both vegan and cruelty-free. This is something that she stated before the launch, according to this article. More and more makeup is trending towards vegan being the future of beauty, and About Face is right on time to help you transform what used to be a trend into a lifestyle.

Affordable

When compared to other name brands of make-up, About Face is one of the more affordable brands. The complete line ranges in price from $14 to $32.

Where Can I Buy About Face Eye Paint?

You'll find the entire collection for sale on the About Face website here. (Please keep in mind that this is not an affiliate link. That means that I don't make a single cent if you choose to click the link and purchase something from the website. This is an honest review, and I won't make anything from you purchasing the makeup.)

About Face makeup is being sold directly to the consumer via the website.

Aside from the website, you can find About Face makeup sporadically in your Ipsy Bag! (That's where I got mine.)

In Conclusion

About Face Eye Paint will instantly remind you of stage makeup. The colors are bold and heavily pigmented. It lasts all day long, no matter how active you are. The primary downside is that it’s not as blendable. This isn’t going to work for a person that loves doing a smokey eye every day.

I didn't even know that she released a makeup line. It's interesting to see that it is also vegan and cruelty free. I think that consumers will eventually expect all beauty products to be like this. It's amazing how theses celebrities can release beauty products at such affordable prices too.

They need to have the perfect shape, and we need a filler for the complete look. Making sure that you have a good eyebrow filler is essential to having gorgeous eyebrows.

Amber is a web writer whose articles focus on beauty, skincare, health, and wellness!

Il Makiage Brow Shaper and Filler

Il Makiage is known for being unapologetically extra. They pride themselves on selling makeup that is for the maximalist instead of the minimalist. This makeup company has made a splash in the cosmetics industry that leaves customers wondering if their products are worth it. Their brow products are some of their most popular products, including their eyebrow mascara.

About Il Makiage Fill and Fix Brow Shaper

This eyebrow mascara is supposed to be an effortless way to achieve a dramatic look. You simply swipe the spoolie brush across your eyebrows for an instantly better brow.

You can pick up Il Makiage Fill and Fix Brow Shaper in a color to match your eyebrows for a more natural look, too.

Colors available include:

 • Latte
 • Caramel
 • Cocoa
 • Truffles
 • Espresso

This product can be used to create tiny hairs for a more natural look if you use small strokes with the brush. The colors blend perfectly with your natural color!

Advantages of Il Makiage Fill and Fix Brow Shaper

There are a lot of good things about this product. When you wear it, it feels like you’re not wearing a single thing. Because you don’t have to use an eyebrow gel to hold it in place, it really is a one-step eyebrow look. The colors blend with natural colors even better than I thought they would! You can’t create one hair at a time, but you can definitely add some eyebrow hairs in sparse areas where you need them. The formula dries quickly, and it does last quite a while.

Disadvantages of Il Makiage Fill and Fix Brow Shaper

This was the ideal eyebrow mascara except for one thing: it clumped horribly. You can see the clumping on the original picture. As soon as I used it, there were clumps in my eyebrows, as you can see in the picture below.

I did try to smooth the clumps out, hoping that I could make this product work because of all of the pros of Il Makiage Fill and Fix Brow Shaper, but it just wasn’t possible. I wiggled the brush during application. I didn’t pump the brush in and out of the tube. There wasn’t too much product. (I thought that might be the case, so I made sure to wipe the brush to eliminate the excess product.) After double-checking the date I received it, I observed that it was not expired.

According to other reviews, this seems to be a chance you’ll instantly take when ordering the product. Some users claim it’s the perfect product to get natural, amazing brows. Others agree that it clumps as soon as you use it.

What Is a Brow Shaper and Filler?

A brow shaper and filler is exactly what it sounds like. These products help to give your eyebrows the shape that you want, and the look that you are trying to achieve. This can include giving them a fine point at the end or filling sparse areas. Certain products are designed to accomplish different things. What product you choose can also depend on your skill level.

Types of Brow Shapers and Fillers

A quick walk down any drugstore aisle will instantly reveal quite a few different types of brow shapers and fillers. You’ll find everything from pencils to products that look like markers, pomades, and more. Picking the perfect product for your eyebrows will instantly make filling in your eyebrows easier.

Mascara like Liquid Shaper and Filler (Also Called Brow Mascara)

Brow mascara is exactly what it sounds like. It is a mascara designed for your eyebrows. These come in a tube and are applied with a small spoolie brush, just as mascara is. The spoolie is smaller so that it’s the perfect size for your eyebrows.

This product has similar application features to mascara. It goes on wet, takes time to dry, and then can stay in place all day long. Brow mascara typically stays in place longer than other products, like brow powder, so you don’t always need to use a brow gel to keep your look locked in all day long.

Eyebrow mascaras are not ideal for beginners, though. They do take a little bit of practice. Because they are applied with a spoolie, it can be hard to draw in just a few hairs, and they aren’t ideal for outlining the eyebrows, either.

Pencil Brow Shaper and Fillers

Eyebrow pencils are similar to eyeliner pencils. They come in a variety of formulas, from your basic eyebrow pencil to a gel like formula. Pencils are perfect for drawing individual hairs to fill in sparse areas. They can be used to draw a defining outline of the eyebrows for a wow look that looks perfect for selfies. Filling in the eyebrows with a pencil will result in a more natural look than when you use eyebrow mascara.

These are great for beginners! They’re simple to use, and wipe off easily if you make mistakes. There are several different formulas available so you can find the one that works for you.

The major downside to using an eyebrow pencil instead of other products is that they don’t have a lot of staying power. These don’t always last all day. You’re going to need an eyebrow gel or wax to make your look last.

Brow Powder

Brow powder is another great product for beginners. You apply it along your eyebrows with an angled brush, and it helps fill in sparse areas. It doesn’t look as natural as drawing fine hairs with an eyebrow pencil, but it still looks more natural than brow mascara. Brow powder is similar to pressed eyeshadow in both application and staying power. This product also requires brow gel or wax to last all day.

Brow Pomade

Brow pomade is similar to a creamy, gel like eyeshadow single. These products usually have deeper colors, making them perfect for a bolder look. The gel like formula is applied using an angled brush to fill in sparse areas. It’s great for beginners! Thanks to the unique formula, a pomade will stay in place longer than a powder. Some of these might require an eyebrow gel. Whether or not you need one depends on the product and the brand.

In Conclusion

I really wanted to love this product. Aside from the clumping, it’s the definition of perfection. You can use it heavily and make it obvious that you’re behind the dramatic eyebrow look or lightly for a natural look. It blends wonderfully with natural eyebrows. However, if it clumps you simply can’t use it. I wouldn’t recommend it.

In this article, I’ll tell you about popular colored mascaras and how to create your own colors at home.

Tori loves trying out new makeup looks and sharing her expertise and tutorials with others.

Make your eye color pop with colored mascara.

hellovictoria

Pairing Colored Mascara With Your Eye Color

I enjoy experimenting with different makeup looks. For that reason, I jumped on the opportunity to test out different kinds of mascara and research different looks to apply in real life as opposed to the runway. To start, I want to say that you should wear whatever color mascara you like the best because there are no set rules for fashion and makeup. But, if you’re curious about how different colored mascaras pair with your eye color based on color theory, or you're looking for different ways to execute a colored mascara look in your daily makeup routine, look no further!

The Theory Behind Colored Mascaras

To figure out the best colors for your makeup, including colored mascaras, it helps to understand the science behind those decisions. This is called color theory. I could go down an entire rabbit hole on color theory because I use it all the time for dying my hair. But for now, I’ll simplify it as much as possible!

There are three basic categories of color theory that can help make decisions when it comes to colors: color harmony, the color wheel, and color context. (Source)

A Basic Color wheel that includes primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. They can become more complex from here.

All Things Hair

Color Wheels

There are many different versions of the color wheel, but in general, it is a wheel of the rainbow that arranges colors in a natural order. This is where you’ve probably heard the terms primary colors, secondary colors, and tertiary colors. Check out the wheel above for an example.

Color Harmony: Six basic color schemes as examples using a color wheel. From here, you can also add in color wheels that add white, gray, or black to adjust tints, shades, and tones.

Medium

Color Harmony

Color Harmony means that colors are arranged in a way that is pleasing to the eye. There are many different types of color harmony that you may have heard of, such as monochromatic (shades of the same color), analogous (colors that are next to each other on the color wheel), complementary (colors that are directly across each other on the color wheel), or triadic (colors on the wheel that create a triangle).

When considering color harmony, professionals also consider color temperature (warm vs. cool tones), shades (adding black), tints (adding white), and tones (adding gray). (Source)

Color Context: The red box appears differently on each of the colors above.

Portraitoes

Color Context

Color context is very complex, but in a nutshell, it is how colors react when used with other colors. It can change your perspective and opinions about certain colors when they are paired with other colors, as in the example above.

All of these are taken into consideration by many industries. In particular, the cosmetics industry uses them to make recommendations to customers and develop new products. And that is where colored mascaras, as they relate to eye color, enter the room.

How to Incorporate Colored Mascara Into Your Makeup Look

Colored mascara can be a little intimidating! But in general, here are some tips to make it stand out.

Is Colored Mascara Tacky?

Personally, I don’t think any makeup look is off-limits or tacky. There are makeup looks I wouldn’t try for myself, of course, just like anything. But if you like the style and it makes you happy, do it! There is nothing wrong with experimenting to find your perfect makeup style, and you can incorporate colored mascara if you decide that you like it!

Use a Good Lash Primer

Many colored mascaras on the market today tend to dry much darker than the color you see in the bottle or on the packaging. For this reason, I absolutely recommend investing in a white lash primer, which helps the color stand out brighter. My favorite is Tarte’s Opening Act Lash Primer, but L’Oreal’s Voluminous Lash Primer is a great inexpensive alternative.

Here's me with a monochromatic red and burgundy makeup look using the Urban Decay Naked Heat Palette and L'Oreal Voluminizing Mascara in Burgundy.

hellovictoria

Monochromatic Makeup Colors

One of my favorite ways to wear colored mascara is with a monochromatic color scheme. Your eyeliner and eyeshadow should be of a similar color family, like the photos I’ve shared above. Not only does this makeup look accentuate your eye color, but it is a cohesive look altogether.

For this monochromatic red/burgundy look I used:

 • Urban Decay Naked Heat Palette
 • Tarte Opening Act Lash Primer
 • L’Oreal Voluminous Original Mascara in Burgundy

A complementary color look of gold and purple on my eye, using the Urban Decan Naked Honey Palette with L’Oreal Volumizing Mascara in Deep Purple.

Complementary Makeup Colors

Another way to wear colored mascara is with a complementary makeup scheme. Complementary colors are across from each other on the color wheel. Great pairings of complementary colors are:

 • Yellow and Purple
 • Orange and Blue
 • Red and Green

Complementary colors are also a great tool to determine your best makeup shades for your eye color too! This could mean your favorite shade of red or purple makeup for green eyes, pink or orange makeup for blue eyes, green or blue makeup for brown eyes, and more.

For this complementary makeup look, I used:

 • Urban Decay Naked Honey Palette
 • Tarte Opening Act Lash Primer
 • L’Oreal Voluminous Original Mascara in Deep Purple
A bright neon pink mascara look I created using neon pink eyeshadow from Urban Decay's Wired Palette with Tarte Opening Act Lash Primer.

How to Make Colored Mascara with Eyeshadow

There aren’t a whole lot of options on the market for vibrant colored mascaras, so the best way to get a vibrant mascara is by making your own. I know that seems intimidating, but it’s actually really easy with the help of just three supplies:

 • White Mascara Primer: I used Tarte Opening Act Lash Primer.
 • Clean Spoolie or Foam Eyeshadow Applicator: I like to wash off and reuse the wands from old mascaras. I often find these applicators are better than the generic spoolie packs you can find in many makeup stores.
 • Powdered Eyeshadow: Any color you choose. I used Savage from the Urban Decay Wired Palette.

How to Create Custom Vibrant Mascara:

 1. Apply the primer to your eyelashes. Don’t let the primer dry!
 2. Using a clean spoolie or foam eyeshadow applicator, create a little bit of loose powder in the eyeshadow pan and pick up some of the color with the spoolie.
 3. Quickly apply the color to your lashes using the spoolie until the white is completely covered.

Tips and Tricks:

 • You can mix the eyeshadow and the primer separately on a clean surface, such as a piece of paper, and then apply it to your lashes with a clean spoolie. If you know you’re going to be using that color often, you can even put eyeshadow powder on the brush and mix it into the mascara container until you have the desired pigment level, and then you don’t have to mix it each time!
 • It’s important to note that if you do try making your own colored mascara using eyeshadow, it works best with matte colors. I tried a few different types of eyeshadow, and I found that anything with a sparkle had a tendency to look patchy when I stepped back from the mirror, even though it wasn’t.
 • Using eyeshadow can definitely create a lot of powder fallout on your face. While applying the powder, it's a good idea to hold a small piece of paper, tissue, or a makeup wipe underneath your eye to prevent it from falling onto your cheeks. When applying to the top, hold the tissue behind your lashes so that the color doesn’t smear on your eyelid while applying.
 • Be careful if you do this when wearing contacts! You may want to take them out and put them back in afterward so that you don’t get eyeshadow on your contacts.

How to Wear Colored Mascara Based on the Color of Your Eyes

Based on color research and current trends, these are the best colors of mascara for your eye color! When you choose your mascara based on the color of your eyes, try using the analogous, complementary, or vibrant eyeshadow looks mentioned above to complete your colored mascara look!

Brown eyes with purple mascara.

Colored Mascara for Brown and Dark Brown Eyes

Based on complementary colors, violet or green mascaras are excellent colors for brown eyes. They will definitely make your makeup stand out in a crowd. For the more adventurous mascara-wearers, try a bright red.

Blue eyes with burgundy mascara and eyeliner

L'Oreal Paris

Colored Mascara for Blue Eyes

If you have blue eyes, try burgundy or violet mascara. These colors mimic nature (think red corals in the blue ocean) which means your eyes will be the highlight of your look. If you’re looking for something more vibrant and unique, try pink!

Green eyes with purple mascara.

Urban Decay on Instagram

Colored Mascara for Green Eyes

Green eyes will look stunning with burgundy or purple mascara! Burgundy and other red tones are complementary to green on the color wheel, and purple is a triad color. You won’t go wrong with either of these gorgeous shades. If you want something super vibrant, go for cobalt blue.

Hazel eyes with green mascara.

L'Oreal Paris

Colored Mascara for Hazel Eyes

Hazel eyes are a combination of brown and green—so that means that any colors that are great for brown or green eyes will be great for hazel eyes. My favorite shades for hazel are burgundy or dark green. If you want to wear a more energetic shade, I’d recommend a bright green.

Brands of Colored Mascara and Where to Buy Them

There are lots of brands that are currently selling different kinds of colored mascara, depending on what you are looking for!

L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Original Washable Bold Eye Mascara available colors.

L'Oreal Paris

L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Original Washable Bold Eye Mascara

One of the most popular, inexpensive, and accessible lines that I have found online is L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Original Washable Bold Eye Mascara. L’Oreal is sold in many stores, but to have the easiest access to all of their colors, I recommend ordering on Amazon.

The line comes in five great subtle colors: cobalt blue, deep violet, deep burgundy, deep green, and black. The great thing about this brand is that they also know it shows up best with a primer, so they’ve got you covered with a white primer in the same lineup.

I bought two of their colors to try: Deep Violet and Deep Burgundy. I liked the violet, but I have to say the burgundy was my absolute favorite of the two. Tiktok appears to agree with that assessment—L’Oreal’s burgundy mascara went viral on the makeup side of the platform, and it sold out in many places during that time.

ColourPop’s extensive line of bright candy colored mascaras.

Colourpop

ColourPop BFF Mascara

Another great option is Colourpop BFF Mascaras, which come in bright candy-colored shades like magenta, true red, and purple prose. Colourpop is another inexpensive brand available at stores such as Ulta, but I can never seem to find it in stock because it’s so popular. Because of this, I recommend ordering directly from their website to make sure you get the color you want. I love both the pink and red colored mascaras from this lineup as they are fun, vibrant, and unique!

Jessica loves all things creative in the world of entertainment, crafting, and cosmetics.

In my 20's, I developed a small complex with my sparse eyebrows. As an Italian-American brunette, I guess I had a preconceived notion that I should have better eyebrows, even if that meant that they were unruly. When I started drawing them on about ten years ago, I felt like the only person. Other than seeing my grandmother do this to herself when I was a little girl with one of those old-school red Maybelline brown eyeliners, I'd never seen my peers doing this.

Then, a few years ago, there came the eyebrow obsession. Just like that, people were using pencils, creams, powders, and gels to get thick, beautiful eyebrows. Both drugstore and high-end companies started marketing products like crazy to help make brows more beautiful. I suddenly felt like I fit in. Instead of feeling weird about what I was doing, I felt ahead of the times.

The only problem is that I tend not to wear a lot of makeup (outside of my stage job), so I was really wanting something to make them look better on their own.

When the makers of RapidLash made a product specifically for eyebrows, I was thrilled. Of course, I had to give it a try! This is my experience.

Purchasing

You can purchase RapidBrow for about 39.99 at retailers such as Ulta, Walgreens, Walmart, Target, and online.

I bought this tube on eBay from a trusted seller for about $18.99, not expired, and it arrived fast. You can also purchase on Amazon as well.

The price can vary quite a bit based on where you buy this, especially online. So take your time, browse, and only purchase from retailers you trust. There are some good deals out there. Try to purchase it sealed and make sure it is within the expiration date if you buy from a site such as eBay or Amazon.

I purchased one tube from an eBay seller that had really good reviews. I paid about $16.00 (maybe the price was too cheap) and it arrived fast. However, when I opened it and applied it to my eyebrows, the smell and consistency were not right. The box was closed when I purchased it so nothing seems tampered with. I don't know if maybe it had been kept in the heat or something that spoiled it, but I asked for a refund and got one with no questions asked, promptly. However, I will be a little bit more wary next time. I have had one bad experience out of the three times that I have purchased it on eBay.

Claim

This claims to “put the wow back in your brow“ by transforming weak, sparse, uneven, eyebrows making them look healthier. It is supposed to help condition, restore, and repair the appearance of eyebrows in about two months. It is made of powerful peptides, fortifying proteins, and beneficial extracts that are safe and gentle on skin. It is also ophthalmologist and dermatologist tested and deemed safe for contact lens wearers.

Ingredients

Water, Butylene Glycol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Rhizobian Gum, Sodium Hyaluronate, Keratin, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Glycerin, Myristoyl, Pentapeptide-17, Biotin, Panthenol, Pantethine, Hydrolyzed, Glycosaminoglycans, Allantoin, Cucurbita Pepo (Pumpkin) Seed Extract, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Maris Aqua (Sea water), Octapeptide-2, Copper, Tripeptide-1, Polypeptide-23, Prunus, Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Fruit Extract, Malus Domestica Fruit Cell Culture, Xanthan Gum, Lecithin, Backhousia Citriodora Leaf Oil, Styrene/Acrylates/Ammonium Methacrylate Copolymer, PVP, PEG-12, Dimethicone, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Hydroxide.

Packaging

Each tube comes sealed in plastic and in a box. When I bought mine on eBay, it was sealed and still in the original box. Sometimes it may not be in a box if you buy on a site such as eBay, but as long as it is sealed and within the expiration date, I would think that you're good.

The tube itself is pretty sleek. The cap twists off and attached to it is a brush, much like mascara.

Convenient wand brush applicator tames lashes while applying the treatment.

Application

You are supposed to apply this twice a day (morning and night) to clean, dry eyebrows free of makeup and creams, in short, upward strokes. The formula is clear and has no heavy scent. It also tames brows while it works.

Top picture is before and bottom is after about 5 weeks. I am also using their other product, Rapidlash. As you can see it works too (I wrote a separate review for that.)

The Verdict

I have been using this for about six weeks, twice a day (most days) and it really does work. Even after I tweezed my brows, my brows feel fuller, and I think even the individual hairs are longer. I will continue to use this, and I am excited to see if there is even more improvement over time. I will update in about six more weeks.

Update After Eight Weeks of Use

I have now been using this for over eight weeks and I am over the moon! I feel like my eyebrows are darker. I guess it's because they were so sparse. This is truly a wonderful product. It worked in just a month or so, and my results just got better with time. Now I am only using it for maintenance, so I am testing out using it once a day, every other day or so. No more eyebrow complex for this girl.

I took a picture of this latest result (excuse my dark circles) and posted it below. I may have to tweeze more regularly now, and I'm happy to report that my brows look kind of unruly!

After a little over 8 weeks of using.

<![CDATA[Product Review: Rapidlash Eyelash Enhancing Serum]]>https://bellatory.com/makeup/Product-Review-Rapidlashhttps://bellatory.com/makeup/Product-Review-RapidlashSun, 19 May 2019 14:55:14 GMTThis is my personal review of RapidLash eyelash enhancing serum.

Jessica loves all things creative in the world of entertainment, crafting, and cosmetics.

There is no way to magically grow lashes overnight, but some products might help.

Liam Welch

For as long as I can remember, I have had short, tiny, sparse eyelashes. They are so short, I can't even curl them! It would certainly be helpful to make them look better if at all possible. While genetically, I was given nice skin and teeth, as far as eyelashes and eyebrows are concerned, I was forgotten.

Luckily today, there are so many things to help this issue. From false lashes that are readily available to professionally applied eyelash extensions, we don't need to be born with good genetics anymore.

I have been wanting to find an option that is right for me. Even though I have heard nothing but great things, I have been hesitant to get a prescription and pay the hefty price of Latisse. Not to mention, it comes with possible side effects. I also refuse to wear fake eyelashes in everyday life because I find them uncomfortable. Life is too short to be uncomfortable, even for beauty. Mascara works fine, but I wanted them to look better without makeup.

After reading lots of great reviews, I decided to try this easy to use and affordable product to make my natural lashes look better.

Where I Purchased RapidLash

I bought this tube of RapidLash from a trusted Ebay seller. It is well within the expiration date and was unopened and sealed. I paid about $20.86 and free shipping, and it was delivered in a few days.

It is also available on Amazon for various prices. You can also purchase it at retailers such as Ulta, Ulta.com, CVS, and Walmart for about $49.99. Either way, it is much more affordable than other options, and of course, no prescription needed.

What the Product Claims

RapidLash claims to condition, moisturize, and strengthen your lashes to improve their overall appearance. The ingredients help the durability of the lashes, as well as their shine and sheen. It should help make lashes appear thicker and fuller in about four weeks.

This can also be used on eyebrows to improve their appearance too. However, they do have a separate product for that called RapidBrow. I am also using that and am in the process of reviewing that as well.

Ingredients

Water, Butylene Glycol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Glycerin, Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17, Rhizobian Gum, Sodium Hyaluronate, Biotin, Panthenol Pantethine, Hydrolyzed Glycosaminoglycans, Allantoin, Cucurbita Pepo (Pumpkin) Seed Extract, Maris Aqua/Sea Water, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate Octapeptide-2, Copper Tripeptide-1, sh-Polypeptide-1, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Black Sea Rod Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Sorbic Acid.

How to Apply

The directions say to apply this to a clean eyelash area free of lotions, creams, and makeup only once per day. It says to apply in the evening, but I have also read online that it can be used any time of day and makeup can be applied after it has dried. I have done this a time or two, but I prefer at night. It has a precision tip that makes applying the product a cinch. I drag it along my lash line, and it doesn't feel heavy or sticky. It seems that there is no scent to this product.

The Verdict: Does RapidLash Work?

I have been using this almost daily for about a month now, and this stuff really does work. I had some inner lashes that had gotten pulled out by my false eyelashes, and they filled in pretty quick. My lashes are about as long as they can get. Are they long? No. While I think that this stuff makes lashes healthy and thicker, I don't believe it is a miracle product that makes your lashes longer (it doesn't claim to). I don't think it gives you anything you don't already have. But it is easy to apply and really does help give your natural lashes that extra boost to make them look as good as they can. And I like that it only needs to be applied once a day.

I don't know how long this tube will last, but I'm going on my second month out of it. I will update when I run out to give you a time frame. I'm hoping to get at least another month, maybe two.

I will continue to use this because my lashes do go through a lot of abuse and they can't afford it. It does what it says it will do and at a great price.

These are my lashes after about a month of using this. I still wear false lashes every evening for my job, but my natural lashes hold up much better using this and definitely look fuller!

<![CDATA[How to Create the Perfect Winged Eyeliner]]>https://bellatory.com/makeup/Creating-the-perfect-winged-eyelinerhttps://bellatory.com/makeup/Creating-the-perfect-winged-eyelinerTue, 16 Oct 2018 22:40:32 GMTWould you like to learn how to create the perfect winged eyeliner? In this article, I am going to break it down step-by-step for you. This look can be simple or dramatic; perfect for a date or a night out on the town!

After a lot of trial and error, Crystal finally figured out how to draw eyeliner without tape or assistance of any sort.

Getting Started!

Creating the perfect winged eyeliner can be very difficult if you don't know what you are doing. I have been teaching myself since I was young, and I've just recently stopped using tape to create my line and can now free hand it. I am going to break winged eyeliner down and make it as simple as possible. This look is perfect for a date or a night out on the town. It's dramatic but not over the top! Let's get started. For this look, you will need liquid eyeliner of your preference.

Easy Peasy

Follow your natural eye shape and draw a line that works with that.

1. Follow Your Natural Eye Shape

Start by applying your desired eyeshadow. Step one is the basic foundation of your wing. Some of the best advice I have ever received was: always follow the shape of your eye. Starting from the outside corner of your eye take your liquid eyeliner and follow the natural shape of your eye going out and up as shown in the picture above. Try not to make the line go straight up or straight out it is not a flattering look for anyone. If you have trouble with this step, you can take a piece of tape and follow that line on your face.

The first line.

2. Bring It Back In

Now you are going to make another line creating the outline of your wing. You are going to begin at ALMOST the tip for your first line and bring it in to about the middle of your eyelid, creating a sharp, pretty wing outline.

Create the outline of your wing.

3. Connecting to Your Inner Corner

Step Three is pretty simple and probably the easiest step. You are going to take your liner and connect a simple, thin line from your wing to the inner corner of your eye. Careful not to get eyeliner in your eye! Also, remember you can always add more liner if you are not happy with how it turns out. It's much harder to take liner way so always start small and build on that slowly.

Connect your wing to your inner corner.

4. Fill in the Blanks

Step four is last but certainly not least! For the last step, you are carefully going to color in your wing with your liquid liner. Be careful not to color outside your wing so go slow. If you do make a small mistake, you can go in with some concealer of your choice and clean up your line!

Fill in the blanks.

Let's Finish This Look Up!

Now that you have finished your amazing winged eyeliner you can clean up your wing with a little concealer carefully to make you wing super sharp. Another thing you can do to enhance to this beautiful look is to add a little mascara and a pair of false lashes to make it a little more dramatic but not crazy and over-the-top!

<![CDATA[A Guide to Choosing the Best Mascara for Older Women]]>https://bellatory.com/makeup/mascara-for-older-womenhttps://bellatory.com/makeup/mascara-for-older-womenMon, 26 Feb 2018 22:09:55 GMTLadies, are you still using the same brand of mascara you did 30 years ago? Colors, formulations, and ethics have changed. Is it time to update what's in your makeup bag?

Middle-aged women are forgotten about by retailers. I offer help with clothing choices, skincare, and healthy eating for the mature woman.

Mascara for Older Ladies

Recently, I had a woman email me asking for my advice about mascara for mature women. She contacted me after reading an article I had written about eyebrow pencils for gray hair and was curious about the rest of my eye makeup routine.

I had to stop and think about whether I had changed my makeup over the years without realizing it. It turns out, I had. Sometimes these choices were subtle and other times quite drastic. When I began thinking about how aging changes our face, I realized it isn't just a change of color we need to make—there is much more to consider.

Eyelash Curler

Should You Curl Your Eyelashes?

Like most women, I always wanted long lashes that curled up and framed my eyes, but I didn't have those. Mine are straight and blonde at the ends. In other words, they aren't framing my face; they are just there doing their job of keeping dust and particles out of my eyes.
I will tell you, when I go out, I curl my lashes. There are some drawbacks, though. One thing I have always hated was the look from the side. It created a sharp angle that looked unnatural. From the front, it looked great. The lashes fanned out, which was the look I was after. Of course, I could never get both eyes to look the same. Perhaps, it's the same for you. When I was younger, I used a sewing pin to separate the lashes. That was pretty dangerous, and thank goodness nothing happened. Now my hands aren't as steady. Whether it's my coffee consumption or just a sign of aging, I'm not sure. I no longer use a pin, only the tip of the mascara brush or a lash comb.
Although I currently curl my lashes, I can see that this may have to change as I age. As we get older, our skin loses its elasticity and begins to sag. Gravity is a bitch! Wouldn't you agree with this, ladies? You may think that this has nothing to do with using an eyelash curler, but it does. The skin on the upper eyelid below the eyebrow begins to droop. It may also fall at the sides. A friend of mine had her eyes lifted, saying it interfered with her driving. I questioned that, but it is what she told her medical insurance company, so she decided it was an okay reason to give me. I don't know why some women make themselves feel guilty about having cosmetic surgery. Everyone is conscious of the way they look, and if you want something done and can afford it, do it.
If you have deep-set, drooping, or hooded eyes and try to curl the lashes, they touch the skin above. Not only is this uncomfortable, but it also leaves smudges where the mascara is rubbing. Even if you look down until your mascara is dry, you'll get a dirty smudgy line by the end of the day. I've included a video further down the article where a woman with hooded eyes demonstrates her makeup routine.

False Eyelashes

In my family, false eyelashes seem to have jumped a generation. My mother loved them and so does my daughter. Perhaps they weren't the 'in' thing when I was growing up but they are once again popular. They are also more accepted now.

There are different types, some you can wear for a few weeks and others should be removed at the end of the day when you remove the rest of your makeup.

If you have problems wearing mascara, give false eyelashes a try.

Colors of Mascara

When the woman I mentioned in the first paragraph sent me the email, I had to stop and think, had I changed my mascara. Yes, I have, and although I thought this was because I was trying different brands, it was more than that. I was altering my look to suit my age. When I was younger, I wore black to give myself a dramatic look. Now, I prefer a brown as black looks too harsh on me. As we age, our skin color changes and becomes less rosy and more ashen. Black mascara can give us a hard unappealing look. It may work for Morticia in the Addams Family, but less is more for the rest of us.

Although you may think there are just variants of black and brown, there are several mascara colors, for example, blue, pink, and white. In my opinion, garish colors should be left for the younger crowd.
Sometimes it can be challenging to change as we have become comfortable with our look and continue to use the same product just because we have in the past.

Sensitive Eyes

If you've noticed your eyes are now more sensitive than they once were, you may opt for mascara specifically for sensitive eyes. Choose one that has been humanely tested and won't irritate. The irritation in mascara can come from a few different areas. It could be the mixture of ingredients or even fibers. Avoid mascaras with fibrous particles in them that attach themselves to the eyelashes, thus building volume. These tend to flake off during the day and fall into the eye or onto your cheekbones.

Ethically Produced

The cosmetic industry has seen the market for ethically produced makeup. These might include ingredients that are organic or have not used animals. Some of these may be from well-known large manufactures and others from companies that specialize in only ethically produced products and may have branched out and begun making cosmetics.
Some of the mascara ingredients can cause the glands to dry up, causing dry eyes, especially in women over 50. It's worth looking at the list of ingredients to be sure you're not sensitive to them.

Wearing Glasses

If you wear glasses, applying makeup can pose a few problems. It can be difficult when applying eye shadow and mascara. If your eyesight prevents you from safely applying mascara, try using a magnifying glass. I have seen, as I'm sure you have, those glasses that flip down to allow makeup to be applied. I've never tried them but would be interested to hear if you have, and how well they worked for you.

The other consideration is the length of your eyelashes, especially if you wear false eyelashes. Check that your eyelashes aren't going to hit the lenses or the upper frame. For reading, I wear narrow glasses and have noticed when I look up, my eyelashes hit the frame. For me, it isn't a big problem as I only wear my glasses at night for reading and I always remove my makeup before going to bed.

Eyeliner

If you don't feel your mascara has enough impact if it isn't black and heavily applied, consider eyeliner. Both the liquid and the pencil are great alternatives if you don't want to or can't wear mascara. It still can draw attention to the eye. Now, however, at our age, our eyelids aren't as smooth as they once were. It's like painting on crepe paper! Avoid the desire to straighten out the skin by pulling on the eyelid. Instead, use your non-applying hand to lift your eyebrow. Goodness knows we don't want to be making more wrinkles than is necessary. Here too, heavy eyeliner can be aging, so go easy on the amount you use.

Eyeshadow Colors for Mature Women

Your makeup colors are your own choice but if you're revamping your mascara, now may be a good time for a total change. If you love the color you use, perhaps a toned down shade. Browns, creams, and peach work well together. These are the colors I choose now where I used to wear charcoals, grays, and a muted white.

Questions & Answers

Question: I keep hearing that, for mature women, you should not put eyeliner on the bottom. Is that true?

Answer: I believe people are referring to the inside edge of the lower eye. I know women who do this, and I personally don't think it is a good idea. I am referring to the area between the eyeball and the lashes, not below the lashes.

Using liner below the lashes, isn't a problem except that it can get caught in the wrinkles and folds, and gives an aging look.

Question: I wanted to clarify about hooded lids, I’ve always called them German eyes, it is true they can droop enough to interfere with vision. My mom had the surgery years ago for that reason. Second, question - why different brands? Example the eyeliner. As a 61 year young women who has never been much good at makeup, I value your opinion.

Answer: Regarding the different brands, I use products I like and that work well for me. I am definitely not a 'brand groupie'. If I find a product I love, I stick with it. However, I do like to experiment with other manufacturers.

Question: What mascara is easiest to apply for mature women with limited sight?

Answer: I can't recommend a brand that I feel is better than others but I do have some ideas that you can try. Opt for a short mascara brush and one that has a short handle. If the handle is long, move your hand nearer to the brush. The shorter the brush the more control you'll have. Using a lighted magnifying mirror is helpful.

As I mentioned in the article, don't use a mascara with fibers, you don't want the irritation of a fiber in your eye.

Instead of moving the brush to the eye, rest your elbow on a table if possible and move your face forward. Blink over the mascara brush. Slowly move your head while keeping the brush still. You'll be less likely to have an accident. Relax and take your time.

Hi Audrey,

I think we are both in the same boat, straight and short. You're right curling them and applying mascara can really open them up.

Thanks for the share.

Thanks, Mary, for this helpful hub. What an informative guide on makeup for older women. My eyelashes are straight and short. I curl them which really does give my eyes a better look.

I'll be sharing this article with other women.

Hi Linda,

You're more than welcome. I too like to use an eyeliner, as you say, it helps create a better look, especially as our lashes begin to thin.

Great to hear from you. Thanks.

Linda Chechar from Arizona on January 15, 2019:

Thanks for these great mascara tips. My lashes have thinned and they're not nearly as long as they were. I continue trying different mascaras. I have started using eyeliner which does enhance the look of my lashes.

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on September 04, 2018:

Oh Shauna, I feel for you.

Until that redness on your eyelids goes, you're right not to wear any makeup. It could be an allergy, or a type of contact dermatitis. That could be caused by a reaction to a change of face soap, shampoo, laundry soap etc.

I have noticed dark circles from too much computer time.

The lady who does the hooded eye tutorial, explains her technique well.

Thanks for reading.

Shauna L Bowling from Central Florida on August 17, 2018:

Mary, in the last couple of years my eyes have gone from big and bright to hooded. I hate it. My eyelids are also now pink (have no idea why!). I haven't worn eye shadow in years, but until a few months ago, I'd wear mascara and maybe some eyeliner on the lower lid. I've even cut that out now because I seem to have a problem with my eyes becoming red and irritated on a regular basis. I know it's a combination of age, droopy upper lids, and working on a computer 40 hours a week. I also wear glasses now.

I never wore a lot of makeup when I was younger, with the exception of eye shadow and mascara. Now I don't do my eyes at all. I wear Almay pressed powder on my face, blush and pink lipstick. That's it. On weekends I go bare-faced.

I'm definitely going to watch the hooded eye tutorial. And yes, getting older is a Bitch. Why can't our skin and bodies keep up with our minds?

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on June 05, 2018:

Glad you enjoyed it. The woman in the video isn't me, but I felt she explained it so clearly, I felt it would be a benefit to the readers.

Thanks for reading and your comment.

Thank you for the tutorial for hooded eyes. I will be trying the tips. Great video.

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on April 16, 2018:

Hi Audrey,

What a great tip, I will have to try that. I am finding it more difficult to curl my eyelashes as I get older. I also like the idea the woman in the video mentioned about curling it twice to make it look more natural.

Great to hear from you, thanks for your comment.

Audrey Hunt from Pahrump NV on April 15, 2018:

Thanks, Mary, for these helpful tips. I am in the group of aging women who qualify for the "over-the-hill" group. But what a marvelous climb it has been. I love this hub and I'm all for curling the eyelashes. Mine are naturally straight. I apply a little heat to the eyelash curler, using my hair dryer. It's helps the lashes to curl faster and holds the curl longer.

Super hub!

I do wonder who comes up with such wacky ideas. What good is such a long wand?

I think you'll like the one from Ecco.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

C Garcia on April 03, 2018:

Great tips but I was also looking for a mascara recommendation. I have been waiting for my Estee Lauder (Sumptuous Extreme) to run low so I can switch. The wand is tooooooooo long (don't know what they were thinking!), the wand is heavy and the mascara flakes and smudges easily.

I'll give the Ecco Bella a try. Thanks.

Hi Dianna,

I think the adage about teaching old dogs new tricks is wrong. I love discovering new ways to improve. If I can find a way to do something better, I am up for the challenge.

There are so many talented ladies who have found a life hack for making the eye look lifted.

I'm so pleased you enjoyed the article. Have a wonderful weekend..

Dianna Mendez on March 16, 2018:

Hi Audrey,

Isn't it funny, the more comfortable we are in ourselves, as we age, the less makeup we use.

I just wonder if it is in fact, a mask we wear. You're right, keep it simple.

Thanks for your comment.

Audrey Howitt from California on March 12, 2018:

Hi Thelma,

I think many of us have changed our daily routine with makeup. When I was younger, I didn't want to go to the shops unless I had my 'face on'.

I'm pleased you found the information useful, great to hear from you.

Thelma Alberts from Germany on March 07, 2018:

Great and very informative hub. I seldom wear mascara and have not used eyelash curler in my life. It is indeed difficult to apply mascara as I get older. Thanks for sharing Mary. I have learned a lot from this hub.

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on March 07, 2018:

The key is to go subtle. Toning down the colors and opting for demure instead of dramatic. I think we get into a routine where it is easier to not wear it, but if we make a little effort, we can get back into the habit. I always feel more confident when I have makeup on.

Give it a whirl again and see how you go.

Thanks for reading.

Jo Miller on March 06, 2018:

I haven't used eye makeup for years. I just think it is unbecoming as we age. This article makes me want to try some again, though. Thanks for all of the information.

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on March 01, 2018:

Hi Dora,

Regarding the sagging, I have found if I wear a high bun or ponytail, it is amazing how many years i can remove.

Great to hear from you.

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on March 01, 2018:

Ouch, that has to hurt!

If you're wearing contact, then definitely look for a sensitive mascara. Also avoid ones which are beginning to dry out, you don't want bits falling into your eye.

Thanks for reading.

Natalie Frank from Chicago, IL on February 28, 2018:

Great article. I haven't considered whether I need to change mascara as I get older. I still use blackest black and liquid eyeliner. But I do have trouble applying it as I wear glasses and with my contacts I need magnifying glasses which makes it tough to apply. The number of times I have stuck the wand in my eye is frustrating - I never though of a simple magnifying glass! Plus the mascara for sensitive eyes - I haven't even seen it but will be looking for it. Thanks for the article.

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on February 28, 2018:

Hi Linda,

I think we can get so excited about a new shade or the hype surrounding a product, we forget to delve a bit deeper.

For so many things we have always done without thinking, we need to slow down and reevaluate what we are doing and using.

Maybe this is the wisdom that comes with age.

Thanks for your comment.

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on February 28, 2018:

Hi Ruth,

I think it's all about staying adaptable and doing what we feel is best for us.

I agree with the curler, they do pull. I once had an unexpected sneeze when I was curling, nearly ripped my eyelashes out!

Thanks for your comment.

Thank you for sharing the makeup tips and for reminding us about safe ingredients and the use of animal testing, Mary.

Ruth Coffee from Zionsville, Indiana on February 27, 2018:

Good info. Everything changes as you get older. I stopped using mascara altogether around 50. My lashes aren't as thick and it just didn't seem worth it except on a special night out. However, I did start using eyeliner (which I didn't really use when I was younger) and I wear it only on my top lid. Love it. Love not having to pull on my lashes with a curler too.

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on February 27, 2018:

Hi Jill,

We all seem to be aware of the additives in food but not in our cosmetics. We disagree with animals testing but don't look into what is being used that needs testing.

It's especially important when we think it is being put near our eyes.

Glad you liked the video. Although it's quite long, I felt she made some valid points about possible problems and finding a work around solution.

Thanks for reading.

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on February 27, 2018:

I'll bet you never knew how much we women have to consider when choosing our makeup. Guys just throw on a shirt and jeans and they are ready. Not so for us women.

I do, however, appreciate your support.

I hadn't thought about the additives. Thanks for a thoughtful article. I liked the video tutorial, too.

Are the new palettes up to snuff? Check out my review of the new Silent Treatment Quad, complete with a matte transition shade.

Kathryn Lamoreux is an English teacher who loves all things creative, including fashion, hair, and makeup.

The Wet 'N' Wild Color Icon Quad in Silent Treatment

In December 2017, Wet n Wild launched new versions of its classic Color Icon palettes, along with some brand new Color Icon palettes. The new Silent Treatment is a reformulation of the classic Silent Treatment trio with a matte pinky mauve transition shade added into the mix. As with the original, the steely, silvery, purplish, taupe lid shade is definitely the star of the show, and I'd been thinking of picking it up for a long time. However, I'm glad that I held out for this new palette as the matte transition makes it much easier to create a complete look.

In addition to casually trying out this quad, I swatched each shade on my inner arm and eyelids to show the color and pigmentation. The arm swatches were completed with a finger swatch on top and a brush swatch on bottom. The lid swatches were completed without primer on my left lid and with Milani Eye Shadow Primer on my right lid. All in all, I'm in love with the stunning lid shade and the low price and definitely happy that I picked up this palette. However, if this product was more expensive, I definitely would have been disappointed with fallout and blending issues on the other three shades. For more information on each shade, just keep scrolling down!

Eye swatches of the Transition Shade from the Wet 'N' Wild Color Icon Quad in Silent Treatment

Transition Shade

The transition shade in this palette is a matte, pinky mauve. As a cool-toned gal, I do love the color, but I also find that it isn't the most pigmented or blendable shade I've ever tried. As you can see in the lid swatches above, the effect of this shade is extremely subtle, both with and without primer. However, it works well as a subtle transition, which is all it's really intended for. At the low price of $2.99, you won't see me complaining much.

Eye swatches of the Browbone Shade from the Wet 'N' Wild Color Icon Quad in Silent Treatment

Browbone Shade

Of all the shades in this quad, this pale pinky champagne shimmer is the hardest to see on my skin tone. The color goes on pretty sheer and very shimmery, and it produces a lot of powder kick-up, so be prepared to wipe away some shimmer fallout. Fortunately, the sheerness of the shade makes this pretty easy to do without looking like a deranged glitter fairy for the rest of the day. Since I tend to prefer a more matte shade on my browbone, I like to use this color as an inner corner highlight or even as a shimmer topper in the center of my lid.

Eye swatches of the Crease Shade from the Wet 'N' Wild Color Icon Quad in Silent Treatment

Crease Shade

The crease shade in this palette is a fairly pigmented black with goldish sparkles. However, since it takes some time and effort to blend, most of those sparkles are barely visible in your final look. The overall effect is sooty, especially because I can't be bothered to spend much time blending my eye shadow. But it doesn't really bug me, since black is a shade that I rarely use for anything but lining my eyes. If you're someone who does like wearing black on your lids, crease, or outer corners, be advised that this shade will require a significant investment of blending time, and primer will make this worse. Although my Milani primer is usually not tacky enough to prevent me from blending other shadows smoothly, you can see that it made smoothing out this shade a bit more difficult. Plus, in spite of the primer's sticking power, I still got fallout on the bridge of my nose, which I had to wipe away. If I was a black eye shadow person, I think I would be disappointed with this shade, but as it is, an angled blush turns this into a soft black eyeliner pretty easily.

Eye swatches of the Eyelid Shade from the Wet 'N' Wild Color Icon Quad in Silent Treatment

Eyelid Shade

Someday, dear reader, I will finagle better lighting for my swatches, but unfortunately, today is not that day. While I have saved the best shade for last, I'm afraid that the images above can't really accurately express why I love the Eyelid Shade in this quad so much. It's equal parts silvery lavender and taupe, so it's a great shadow for cool tone lovers and a wonderful way to wear a purple shade to work while remaining super conservative. And, if you do decide to wear it in the evening, the color has a lovely shimmer to it and can be built up for added drama.

Finger and Brush Swatches

Here are some arm swatches of the whole Silent Treatment quad. Finger swatches are on top and brush swatches are on bottom. From top to bottom, we have Transition, Browbone, Crease, and Eyelid.

Swatch Commentary

As you can see in the photo above, the shadows are reasonably pigmented, but by no means punchy. They work well for an everyday cool, mildly shimmery look. Although you can see the glitter in the black shade here, it mostly blends away when you try to apply it on the eyes. Also, while the brush swatch on the Browbone Shade barely shows up, you can see that the finger swatch shows quite a bit of shimmer.

The Final Look: A Cool-Toned, Natural Eye for Work

My final look with the Silent Treatment quad: Eyelid on my lid and lower lash line, Crease on my upper lash line, Transition in my crease, and Browbone in my inner corners. I kept it very understated since I was on my way to work.

Above, you can see my final look for today. As the title indicates, I was headed to work, so I played it pretty safe, but I think it looks nice. I used the Eyelid Shade on my lid and lower lash line, the Crease Shade on my upper lash line, the Transition Shade in my crease, and the Browbone Shade in my inner corners. If I had more time, I might have built up the Eyelid Shade just a teensy bit more and blended out the harsh line around the transition shade, but all in all I was happy with it, as I always am with my looks from this quad.

April is a 35-year-old mother who loves beauty products, new and old.

Makeup Is My Soulmate

Before I get into my likes and dislikes, let me give you a little background.

I’ve been applying liquid liner to my own eyes since I was 11 years old. I fell in love with makeup at a very young age—probably too young. Still, it was instant love, and you never forget your first love right? Now, we had our ups and downs, and, like any relationship, the pairing evolved over time, and my love grew deeper.

Skip ahead to my 20s when I had reached the ultimate level of liquid liner application. Level: flawless . . . or so I thought. While my liner was always perfect, I hadn’t yet reached the challenge of applying while a child was jumping on my back. I didn’t know that was a thing.

Now in my 30s and with three children, I can apply my liner flawlessly with a felt tip and brush alike, in a moving car, on a bumpy road, and with three kids pulling my hair and screaming. If you are able to do this as well, then congratulations! You have reached makeup nirvana.

The Arrival of My (Possible) New Best Friend

When MAC Rollerwheel Liquid Liner was announced, it turned the heads of makeup mavens everywhere, myself included. I purchased it the day it hit the shelves.

If you don’t already know, this new liquid liner has an applicator like no other. It features a tiny wheel instead of the traditional felt tip or fine brush. It actually looks like a mini pizza cutting wheel but not sharp because obviously, ouch. Mac Cosmetics says, “It acts like ‘training wheels‘ for liquid lining.” (I think that is marketing genius).

When that box came in the mail, I ripped it open as if it were filled with drops from the fountain of youth. I immediately went to my makeup room, opened the package, and took off the makeup I was already wearing to excitedly start over with the new product.

Magic!

I rolled that little wheel (hence the name) over my lid and voilà! It hugged my lash line and made an even stroke with a perfectly fine wing tip. Because I’m more dramatic (The only drama you need is on your face, am I right?), I made a second line at the outer corner of my lid and connected the two ends. The perfect wing was born. Of course, I was achieving this already, but the time this tool saved me was precious. It took four minutes off of my time spent on doing a full-face makeup routine. That’s a lot of time in makeup world.

Here Come the Torn Emotions…

While I absolutely love this, I’m also feeling a little betrayed. My 20+ years of perfecting the craft and now, all of a sudden, anyone can achieve my perfection? No fair!

Oh well! Since I am the kind of woman who wants every person to feel beautiful every day, I'm happy to share my knowledge with my little grasshoppers.

Is it worth the buy?

In my honest opinion, $21 is worth the buy.

If your hair is gray, it's time to update your look by simply changing the shade of your eye pencil.

Middle-aged women are forgotten about by retailers. I offer help with clothing choices, skincare, and healthy eating for the mature woman.

Matching Eyebrows and Hair Color

Recently a friend of ours asked my husband, who is a professional photographer, to take a photo of her for her website. He agreed, and we showed up at the arranged time. This only needed to be a headshot, so we didn't anticipate being there long. Our friend is in her early 70s with a shock of light gray hair. We get together most weeks for a casual outing, so I was a bit taken aback to see her with a full face of makeup. It wasn't the touch of lipstick or blusher on her cheeks; it was the eyebrows. White hair, light pink cheeks and lipstick, and then POW dark brown eyebrows. Where did they come from?

I knew I had to say something to her because her eyebrows were the main focal point on her face. We went into the bathroom and toned them down with a cotton ball.

Instead of reaching for that same old colored pencil you've always used, it's time to test some new colors and products.

Finding the Right Color for Greying Eyebrows

The best thing to do is to test the product before you buy it, if possible. While you're testing different colors, ask yourself...

 • How dark (or light) do you want to go? The color you choose should look only slightly darker or lighter than the color of the hair on your head, depending on your hair color, skin tone, and preferences. Most women prefer their eyebrows to look just a bit darker than their hair color, as this tends to look most natural. It's important not to go too dark, however, as this will make your eyebrows too dramatic and overpowering for your face. If you used to use black, you'll likely want to choose something lighter now that your hair and skin has changed. If you prefer darker brows, try black-brown, dark brown, dark grey, or taupe. If you prefer lighter brows, try light brown, dark blonde, or light gray.
 • How warm (or cold)? As we age, our coloring tends to get a bit cooler. As all those pink and red tones fade from our hair and skin, the colors left behind grow a bit colder as we get older. So if you used to use a reddish-brown pencil, you might want to try ash brown or grey now.
 • What type of application works best for your needs? Eyebrow pencils have changed a lot since you were a teenager, and they're not all pencils anymore. Below, you'll find a list of options (pencils, brushes, pens, powders, etc.).

Shades of Gray Hair

It's not easy to maintain great-looking eyebrows when going gray. It doesn't matter what color hair you used to have; all that matters is that you are now a glorious gray or heading that way. It might be either dark or light gray or a combination of the two commonly called 'salt and pepper.'

When you stop to think about it, there are many variations in what we generally think of as gray hair or going gray. Some people may have dark hair with streaks of gray, and others, such as myself, who have light hair, turn from blond to white.

Although it's generally thought that you won't get gray hair until you're older, now it's becoming a fashion statement, and women are choosing to color their hair in various hues of gray, from slate gray to smoky blue-gray to light platinum.

Not all grays are the same. Although the eyebrows don't need to match the color of your hair, they should complement it. Even if you had flowing locks of auburn hair and now you are donning silver ones, let's get a color that will help you look your best, whether your hair is...

 • platinum (dark, cold grey),
 • mushroom (dark, warm, taupe-grey),
 • grey (ranging from dark to light),
 • salt 'n pepper (streaks or varied sections),
 • silver (lighter and shinier than grey), or
 • white (or near-white).

Getting the Color Right

Once when visiting my mother, we were getting ready to go out for dinner. Although we weren't going anywhere fancy, she still wanted to put on some makeup. I had my makeup bag in her bathroom and told her my eyebrow pencil was in there.

My mother had used an eyebrow pencil for more than 65 years and didn't need to look in the mirror. It was like signing her name on a check; she had done it so many times, it was second nature to her. Well, she should have glanced in the mirror.

When she came out and said she was ready to go, my sister and I looked at each other and burst out laughing. She hadn't grabbed my light brown eyebrow pencil; instead, she used a green eyeliner pencil. Our mother stood before us with a matching pair of green eyebrows while my sister and I were bent double laughing until we were gasping for air.

Best Eyebrow Color for Silver or White Hair

Whether your hair is silver, salt-and-pepper, gray, white, or a combination of these, there's an eyebrow pencil color for you. Now you can buy various shades of gray pencils to compliment your color of gray hair. Before, it was a kohl pencil that needed to be rubbed out to achieve this effect.

I am a light blonde/white gray, and I prefer a light gray pencil. This I combine with a taupe powder blended in to give depth and definition. I use my taupe eye shadow to soften the gray pencil coloring and as an eyebrow fill-in where I have gaps.

Types of Eyebrow Makeup: Pencils, Brushes, Powders, Etc.

Brow Pencils

This is probably the eyebrow product you used in high school, and it still works the same (although some pencils come with a brush on one end to aid with application). Some pencils need sharpening while others use plastic twist-up applicators.

Brow Markers or Pens

These look like felt-tip pens and work the same way. It's like using a little paintbrush that automatically inks itself with a sheer pigment: The more you brush on, the darker it gets, but the delicate tip allows you to create hair-like strokes and fill in blank spots by drawing on individual hairs.

Brow Powders

These look like eyeshadows and often come with multiple colors in one palette for customization. Usually applied with a brush, powder can look soft and subtle: keep it light for just a little definition but layer it on for darker brows.

Brow Gels or Mascara

Usually applied with a mascara-style brush, these products go on light and get darker with additional applications. These not only color the skin under the brow hairs but can also coat and accentuate each hair.

Tattoo Pens

Tattoo pens can last for days, but are not as permanent as tattoo tinting or a real tattoo. A temporary alternative to brow tinting.

Eyebrow Tinting

Semi-perrmanent eyebrow color is possible—either done at home or by a professional.

Microblading

Microblading is the latest technique for semi-permanent eyebrow tinting. Incisions are made that mimic strands of hair and dye is applied—the effect lasts from 18 to 30 months.

Cosmetic Tattoos

Some get permanent cosmetic tattoos on their brows. This option lasts the longest: tattoos will fade eventually, but not entirely.

What About Brow Waxes or Pomades?

These are not usually tinted. For longer-lasting coverage, pros always use a wax as a primer. Apply the wax first so that your pencil or powder has something to stick to. Waxes tend to last longer than creamy pomades.

Hair and Skin Change With Age

As if thinning eyebrows and gray hair wasn't enough to deal with, our complexion has also changed. Our skin has lost the elasticity and our coloring has changed. Where once we had a pinkish warm glow, our complexion can now look ashen and dull. If your skin is light, a dark gray eyebrow pencil will look too harsh. Your eyebrows should not be the first thing people notice when they look at your face.

Medical Reasons Why Eyebrows Fall Out

Thinning eyebrows can be a problem for mature women. There are various reasons this can happen, including over-plucking or waxing in the past. For example, I have a bald patch on one eyebrow where I was stung by a bee when I was in my teens, and the hairs never returned.

Some medical problems can cause eyebrows to fall out or become sparse; some of these include:

 • Chemotherapy
 • Menopause
 • Dermatitis
 • Leprosy
 • Alopecia
 • Hormonal changes
 • Autoimmune issues
 • Nutritional deficiencies
 • Thyroid issues
 • Emotional or physical trauma

How to Draw Eyebrows

In this video, the woman shows you how to line up your eyebrows to get the beginning point, the correct location for the arch, and the tail.

Long White Gray Hair

Words to Know

Brow brush: This is used to apply a brow powder and is usually slightly angled and rather stiff. Excellent for adding additional color to those thinning areas.

Brow comb: Used to comb the eyebrows into shape.

The tail of the brow: This is the part nearest the temples; it's one of the areas where thinning may occur and drop out as we age.

Spoolie: This looks like a clean mascara brush. It is ideal for blending hairs, powder, and pencil.

Plucking: Removing eyebrow hairs with tweezers.

Eyebrow waxing: Like leg or bikini wax, warm wax is applied and, when removed, pulls hairs out that have stuck in the wax.

Eyebrow threading: Removing multiple eyebrow hairs using a circle of thread.

Eyebrow enhancer: This is a serum that you apply to reduce hair loss for eyebrows, reduce thinning, and aid in regrowth. Opt for one with organic ingredients if using.

The Best Eyebrow Pencil Remover

I know there are newfangled makeup removers specifically designed to remove this and that with promises to change my life for the better. At my age, I have heard it all before, and quite frankly, I am too old to believe the hyperbole dreamed up by an overpaid marketing guru. I am the type of person who buys a product, and if it works, I stick with it. That is the case with Ponds Cold Cream. It takes off mascara, eyebrow pencil, and eye shadow. For the rest of my face, I use Dove soap. I don't use an astringent as I don't want to dry out my face.

Questions & Answers

Question: Where can I buy gray eyebrow pencils? I've looked for years and can't find any! What are the brand names?

Answer: There is an Amazon link in the article for my favorite gray eyebrow pencil.

Question: What do you do when your eyebrows are dark black and your hair is white and grey?

Answer: If your facial coloring is complementary, then that's great. If you are quite pale, you could tone down the black by using a gray pencil or a lighter eye shadow and blending it in. Because the coloring is natural, I'm sure they look fine.

The example I gave in the article, the woman normally has very pale eyebrows and applied a dark pencil which seemed too harsh.

Question: I'm looking directly "above the video about brow correction." Still, I don't see a link. And I don't use an ad blocker. Can you just type the name of the site to visit for the video about brow correction?

Answer: Yes, go to Amazon and look for Etude House drawing eyebrow pencil. I like the No. 5 grey but there are various shades to choose from.

I mentioned to Hubpages that you couldn't see the ad, and they were stumped as to why it wasn't working for you. They checked it on various mobile devices and I use a laptop and I am able to see it.

I'm sorry for the problem you had.

Question: I cannot find the Amazon link in your article. What eyebrow pencil do you like best?

Answer: The link to my favorite pencil is just above the video about brow correction. If you are using an ad blocker, you may have to disable it to see the link.

Question: My eyebrows are turning gray, but my hair is still very dark. I have very little gray in it, but it doesn't even show up. Should I use a light brown eyebrow pencil?

Answer: Of course, you can use whichever color you feel comfortable with. A light brown pencil would be a good choice, its darker than the gray but not as dark as your hair.

As we age, our skin changes color too, so the light brown you suggest sounds like a good fit for you.

Question: Where can I buy Cover Girl brow enhancer in pewter?

Answer: Normally Amazon carries that color, but they could be out of stock at the moment. You can also opt for a mid-gray tone, that would be close to pewter.

Question: My eyebrows are sparse. I really can’t see well enough to apply an eyebrow pencil. Would a permanent tint be best for my brows? I have salt and pepper hair.

Answer: It is an option to try, however, even with a tint, your brows will still be sparse. Eyebrows take anywhere from four to six months to regrow so you that will give you time to decide whether you want to have them tinted again. If you don't want to or can't use a pencil, other options include, tattooing eyebrows, a new hairstyle, or just live with them as they are.

It is easy to think that sparse eyebrows are noticeable but sometimes we can fixate on a problem and it isn't as bad as we think.

Hi Penn,

If your current eyebrows are dark, then opt for a similar color. However, you don't say whether your gray hair is light or dark. If it is a dark gray, a darker gray pencil will work. If your hair is light (white gray) you could begin to tone down the color of your eyebrows using a grayish taupe color.

There are products from many manufactures that offer waterproof eyebrow pencils. L'Oreal for example. Those would also be smudgeproof.

Penn on June 28, 2020:

My hair is gray with auburn on ends.

My brows are dark but very thin.

What color should I use on my brows. And a product that is water and smudge resistant.

I really need help!

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on June 26, 2020:

Thanks for your question. To avoid the look of pencil lines, you can still use a pencil but don't keep it to a point. A rounded smooth end will avoid those obvious lines.

In this article I have a video of a lady that has alopecia, she explains how to avoid that drawn on look.

JLR on June 25, 2020:

Question: I have tried many many brow pencils and, with all respect, I think they look well...like pencil marks! The gel eyebrow products (e.g. Bobbi Brown) leave my brows full and soft, which is the more natural look I prefer. Problem is I can't seem to find one in a taupe or soft color appropriate for my 68 yr. old grey hair. Any suggestions?? Thank You

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on March 21, 2020:

You can try toning down your charcoal pencil with a bit of taupe eye shadow. Or alternatively the next time you purchase choose a mid to light gray shade.

If you can get a good point on your current pencil you can draw finer lines which will give the illusion that it's lighter. It helps to put it in the fridge if your home is warm . You can get a better point when sharpening it.

Redenia on March 19, 2020:

Because I'm tan skin with gray hair what color eyebrow pencil should I use. I tried charcoal grey and it looked to dark on me pls help

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on February 03, 2020:

Because your eyebrows are light brown with some gray, you have options. You can use a gray pencil or a light brown one. Or a combination of two blended together. I use a pencil and then a bit of taupe eye shadow.

Even though your hair is light, it sounds like your eyebrows are muted enough not to be overpowering.

Thanks for your question.

I have a lot of problems. My eyelashes have fallen out and I mean completely. I am more than half gray and have pale skin with blue eyes. I am over 70 years old. Almost every eyebrow pencil I have used it too dark. I have been using taupe which is still too dark. I want to us a medium or light gray but cannot find it stocked in stores near me. They are supposed to have them. What do you suggest that I use?

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on September 10, 2019:

Hi Kell,

Thanks for sharing your favorite color with us.

Your question is a good one, and the answer is, I don't know. Women of a certain age, have money to spend and show brand loyalty. To my way of thinking, that makes a perfect customer.

Kell Brigan on September 09, 2019:

My fave is Jordana's "khaki" eyeliner. It reads as a light, cool gray on the brows. Getting harder to find, though. Why are American retailers ignoring us?

My hair is graying but my brows are still a soft brown so I do not have a problem yet but something to think about. I do like the soft gray ones above, would probably go with that!

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on November 01, 2017:

Hi Audrey,

It helps to not have a stark contrast between the hair color and eyebrows. Even putting a hint of a gray eyebrow pencil will calm the usual brown pencil. Our hair isn't one shade and our eyebrows needn't be either.

I'm glad you found the article useful, thanks for reading.

Audrey Hunt from Pahrump NV on November 01, 2017:

Hi Kari,

The time comes to us all. I tell myself, I am just a light blonde when in fact I am a combination of white, light blonde and silver. Just as our hair color changes so too should our makeup choices.

Glad you found the article useful, thanks for reading.

Thanks for your visit.

Nell Rose from England on October 16, 2017:

LOL! I just totally cheat with my eyebrows! get eyeshadow brush, rub across brow and go! great ideas and effects. I used to use Ponds, but swear by Nivea thick cream for removal of makeup, cleaning, moisturising etc.

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on October 12, 2017:

Hi Natalie,

This is an interesting question.

I've never had red or auburn hair, although my mother did when she was young.

You have an interesting situation because your eyebrows are thick and your hair is now a red/copper color.

I've looked at images of women with red/copper hair and the eyebrow color ranged from extremely pale, to black. There were some lovely shades of light brown with a hint of red. Naturally dark hair will have highlights of copper or red, so I would suggest a medium brown with reddish or copper tones.

The problem women have as we age, is our skin becomes less vibrant and we don't want anything too stark. We want people to look at us for the right reasons. LOL

Something else worth mentioning, I feel is it is necessary to pick a focal point. If you opt for makeup on the eyes including eyeliner, mascara, and eyeshadow, choose a low key lipstick.

I hope that helps, thanks for the question.

Natalie Frank from Chicago, IL on October 10, 2017:

Great information! I have always had thick black eyebrows. Luckily my mother always told me never to pluck to try to think tbem and I did on lyrics the bare minimum (a friend had told her whenot she was a teenager if she ucked out her eyebrows she cod shape them more easily when they came back in. They never came back in and she spent hethe life pending them on). Now that I am starting to go grey I am coLoring my hair red and am pencil the grey in my browser black to match the rest. I know you never dye you eyebrows but would you suggest using a red pencil to get lighten my browser not that my hair is a light red/copper instead of dark brown? Thanks for the article. Very informative!

Dianna Mendez on October 02, 2017:

Thanks for answering my question, Mary. I remember my mother using Ponds as a moisturizer. I will have to give it a try.

Mary Wickison (author) from Brazil on September 30, 2017:

Hi Dianna,

The way I use the cold cream is to apply it with my fingers and remove it with a cotton ball. I know people are concerned about putting an oil based product near their eyes. I have checked the Pond's site and it will even remove waterproof mascara. They recommend removing it with a damp cloth.

I also use Vaseline at night on the wrinkles around my eyes and don't have any problems from doing this.

Thanks for reading and your question.

Dianna Mendez on September 30, 2017:

This was so timely for me to read. I am in search of better makeup for my eyebrows and eyes. Age being a factor, one has to keep up with what looks best. Does the Ponds cold cream affect your eyes? I would love to try it if it is safe.

Hi FlourishAnyway,

I think the women who rock gray hair are those who are confident and not afraid of getting older.

My husband took a picture of a friend and I asked her if she wanted some of her wrinkles removed using a photo editing program.

She was adamant that she wanted to keep them because that was who she was. It was refreshing to hear that.

Thanks for reading and have a great week.

I bet those green eyebrows were hysterical. It's sometimes hard to know how to yield gently to greying. Review and swatches included.

My I Want Kandee palette, which is packaged just like a tin of chocolates

First Impressions

This was a palette that a lot of beauty enthusiasts expected not to like. First of all, Too Faced does not have a great reputation for its limited-edition palettes, often putting out substandard products that are not made with the same quality as its permanent line—especially when it comes to celebrity collaborations and holiday releases. The "I Want Kandee" palette, created with beauty guru Kandee Johnson and coming out at the same time as holiday releases from rival brands like Tarte and Lorac, could be seen as both a celebrity collab and a holiday release. Additionally, neutral browns and sparkly pinks in cute packaging with sweet, candy scents is a color scheme and concept that Too Faced has done to death. Because of all this, the I Want Kandee palette seems to have gotten more publicity on YouTube anti-hauls than actual ads, hauls, and other hype.

However, after swatching this palette in store, I was actually very impressed! The colors were pigmented, the shimmery shades were stunning, and the color selection, while not revolutionary, is both wearable and fun, providing both practical options (including browns, a matte black, and wearable matte and shimmer highlights) and fun, feminine pops of color. Additionally, everything is laid out in a user-friendly way, with an orange and brown quad, a pink quad, and a purplish quad grouped together, providing beginners with a clear idea of how to use the palette. A warm matte, a cool matte, and a shimmery white highlight are provided, which Johnson says can be used to "transform" the look of the colored eyeshadows, making them warmer, cooler, or more shimmery. While I wasn't a huge fan of the palette's vanilla marshmallowy scent, I knew that I had to have it, so I put in an order right away.

Keep reading for detailed thoughts and swatches!

Finger swatches of the purple quad and highlight below it. From top to bottom: Sugar Plum, Raspberry Cocoa, Taupe Berry, Licorice Rope, and Whipped Cream.

The Purple Quad: Sugar Plum, Raspberry Cocoa, Taupe Berry, and Licorice Rope

My favorite shades in the palette are the purple tones in the eye shadow quad on the right. Since I don't own the White Chocolate Chip palette or any of the Too Faced holiday palettes, I didn't have anything like the shimmery, silvery lavender Sugar Plum shade in my collection. This was my favorite color in the palette. It was buildable to a stunning effect, but also subtle enough when applied lightly that I managed to wear it to work a few times. To smoke out the look in the evenings, I added Raspberry Cocoa, a gorgeous matte violet-brown shade, to the outer corners of my eyes and lined them in black liquid liner. Afterwards, I used some Licorice Rope on an angled brush to set the liner and either Raspberry Cocoa or Taupe Berry to define the lower lash line. Since I have fair skin, the cool pink highlighting shade Ice Cream was wonderful for softening the edges of the purple shadow, and I also used it to define the arches of my brows. After all the warm neutral palettes that have come out lately, I was really excited to have these cool purpley tones to play with.

Finger swatches for the pink quad and the highlight below it. From top to bottom: Sugared Strawberry, Cream Puff, Frosted Pink, Hot Chocolate, and Ice Cream (which is hard to see on my skin tone).

The Pink Quad: Sugared Strawberry, Cream Puff, Frosted Pink, and Hot Chocolate

Some other stars of this palette are the shimmery pinks. While I do have a few pink shades from Too Faced in my Chocolate Bon Bons palette and my Natural Love palette, none of them are quite as shimmery as Sugared Strawberry or Frosted Pink. As a pale, cool-toned person, I enjoyed Frosted Pink the most, because I can make it come off very subtly and wearably on my skin. However, those with medium to dark skin tones may prefer Sugared Strawberry, which is a bit warmer and darker. A nice thing about this palette is that the shades vary from warm to cool, and there are deep matte shades to work with as well as light frosted ones.

In the pink quad, there are also two brown shades. The lighter one, Cream Puff, works as a great transition or subtle crease shade on fair skin since it's just dark enough to provide some contrast without looking at all dramatic. Cream Puff might also be useful for blending out the edges of bright or shimmery eye shadow colors on medium to deep skin. Finally, Hot Chocolate is a very interesting reddish-brown shade with some purplish undertones. On me, it works well as a liner or a dramatic outer corner and crease color.

This quad works well paired either with the cool pink matte highlight, Ice Cream, or the metallic white highlight, Whipped Cream, as an inner corner and brow highlight.

Finger swatches for the orange quad and the highlight below it. From top to bottom: Sparkling Cider, Pastry, Butterscotched, Sweet Toffee, and Banana Cream Pie (which is hard to see on my skin tone).

The Orange Quad: Sparkling Cider, Pastry, Butterscotched, and Sweet Toffee

Most of the reviewers that I have seen were most excited for these colors, particularly the light orange Butterscotched and the brilliant copper shade Sweet Toffee. However, as a pale, cool-toned gal, I can't really say that I was too excited for these shades or that I've gotten much wear from them. Sparkling Cider is a gorgeous neutral shimmer, though, and it looks great all over the lid for a quick, one-step look. Pastry is a good crease color for me, and it also works on an angled brush for filling in my brows a bit. I can't see myself ever getting much use out of the bright pastel orange Butterscotched, but it swatches well, and Sweet Toffee comes off in a finger swatch about as bright as a freshly polished copper penny. I could see using Sweet Toffee in the outer corner or to line the eyes, and Butterscotched could make a nice transition or lid shade for someone who is into oranges. Below the orange quad, Banana Cream Pie is the warmer matte highlight shade, with a definite yellow cast. I have used it as a brow bone highlight and to blend out harsh edges from darker colors.

Transformers?

Although Kandee Johnson has claimed that the Banana Cream Pie and Ice Cream shades can be used as "transformers," lightening and warming or cooling the tones of the other shadows, I think that the effect is subtle. Check out the swatches below for a test of this method.

A test of the "transforming" effect of the highlights in the I Want Kandee palette. On the left is Butterscotched, and on the right is Raspberry Cocoa. The top swatches have been layered with Banana Cream Pie and the bottom ones with Ice Cream.

The Final Verdict

While a lot of people have been calling this palette unoriginal and assuming that it would be low quality, I actually really like the shade range, especially the purples. I think that it's both fun and wearable at the same time, and for me, most of these colors (except for the oranges) are flattering. Everything swatches well, and it's been working well for me on the eyes. Today, I wore the Sugar Plum and Raspberry Cocoa shadows to work without primer, and they were still on my eyes nine hours later, albeit with a bit of creasing due to my oily lids.

A major con to the palette is that the packaging, while adorable, is much bulkier than it needs to be. It has a domed lid, which takes up unnecessary space, and the tin is about half again as thick as my Chocolate Bar palettes. The lid also has no mirror, which makes on-the-go application a bit tricky. And for me, that shortcoming is a bit of a bummer for a $45 palette.

Overall, I am very happy with this palette, and I would recommend it highly to anyone who is interested in the color range. Although some people might say that it's more than the same from Too Faced, I don't think many people will be disappointed with the quality.

From $5 drugstore palettes to high-end splurges, there's a compact eye shadow collection to suit every traveler's needs.

Kathryn Lamoreux is an English teacher who loves all things creative, including fashion, hair, and makeup.

Whenever I travel, I try to pack light, which means that even as a makeup lover, I want to bring just one or two eye shadow palettes that fit in the palm of my hand. Here are a few palettes that I like bringing with me on vacations, family visits, and road trips, with an emphasis on practical selections that offer a lot of variety in a small package—preferably with a mirror and brush included!

Top 6 Travel Eye Shadow Palettes: Little Packages, Big Possibilities

 1. Milani Everyday Eyes in Must Have Naturals
 2. Too Faced Natural Eyes Neutral Eye Shadow Palette
 3. Wet N Wild Color Icon Eight Pan Palette in Comfort Zone
 4. Bare Minerals READY Eye Shadow 8.0 in The Sexy Neutrals
 5. Tarte Make Believe in Yourself Eye and Cheek Palette
 6. Tarte Double Duty Beauty Palette in Don't Quit Your Daydream

1. The Best Drugstore Basics: Milani Everyday Eyes in Must Have Naturals

At $11, the Milani Everyday Eyes palette is pricey for drugstore makeup but worth every penny. It contains smooth, high-quality shadows in every shade you need to create basic looks, including two shimmery highlights (one with a beige undertone and one with a pink undertone), a transition shade, a shimmery taupe, a cool matte dark brown, and a true matte black. The colors are all pigmented and easily blendable, and they come packaged in a gold case that looks almost high end, along with a serviceable double-ended brush. For beginners, the back of the packaging also features suggestions about where to use each shade on your eye.

Although this palette works great on its own, it also makes a great supplementary palette to accompany palettes that lack a good transition, liner, or highlight shade. An example that immediately comes to mind is the Tarte Make Believe in Yourself -palette, which is also mentioned on this list. The basics in the Must Have Naturals palette, especially the light brown transition shade and the dark brown and black defining shades, complement the rainbow of shimmers in the Tarte palette very nicely, making it easy for you to create a complete look.

Neutral to cool-toned basics not your style? The palette comes in seven other color ranges as well, including a slightly warmer, more shimmery option (02 Bare Necessities), a smoky blue option (03 Smoky Essentials), an assortment of purples (04 Plum Basics), a warm terracotta version (05 Earthy Elements), and a bright, colorful option (06 Vital Brights). New to the range are 07 Matte Basics and 08 Must Have Metallics. From the looks of Matte Basics, it may give Urban Decay's Naked Basics travel palettes a run for their money!

Perfect for: Someone seeking a basic set of high-quality travel eye shadows on a budget. You might not be getting variety, but you are getting everything you need to easily put together a great, polished look for every day of your trip. Plus, the included brush means one less thing to pack.

Swatches From Milani Must Have Naturals

Here are the swatches from Must Have Naturals, with finger swatches at the top and brush swatches below each one. From top to bottom are the beige highlight, the transition shade, the shimmery brown, the dark brown, the pink highlight, and the black.

A cult classic, this nine-pan set features a variety of matte and shimmer shades, including a matte creamy white (Heaven), a shimmery light pink highlight (Satin Sheets), a matte light tan transition shade (Nudie), a matte light brown (Cashmere Bunny), a shimmery dusty rose (Push-Up), a shimmery soft gold (Honey Pot), a matte deep chocolate brown (Sexpresso), a shimmery grayish brown (Erotica), and a medium chocolate brown with gold sparkles (Chocolate Martini). With the possible exception of Heaven, the colors are all pigmented, and they apply smoothly, too.

On my last vacation, I took this palette with me, and I loved the variety of options it gave me. Push-Up was my go-to lid color, but it was easy to switch things up by using the shimmery gold, Honey Pot, or the lighter pink, Satin Sheets, instead. Nudie and Cashmere Bunny both make great crease colors on my skin tone, and the shimmery browns, Erotica and Chocolate Martini are fabulous for deepening out the outer corner of the eye for a smokier nighttime look. Although this palette doesn’t have a matte black, I wear dark brown eyeliner pretty often, so I just tossed an angled liner brush in my bag and used Sexpresso as my eyeliner every day. If you prefer using a pencil, liquid, or gel liner, you can also use Sexpresso to set your liner, smoke it out, or deepen the outer corner and crease.

While the palette does not come with a brush, it does include a small mirror for application on the go. The metal packaging is also durable enough to pack with confidence, and the magnetic closure is firm and secure.

Perfect for: Someone who loves their shimmers but wants all of the elements needed to create a complete look in one palette. This palette provides enough variety of shimmers to create looks that are either natural or smoky, rosy or golden, soft matte tan or dramatic shimmery brown. Use the matte white as a highlight, the matte light browns as transition shades, or the matte dark brown as a liner to complete your look.

Another cult classic, Wet N Wild's Comfort Zone palette contains a variety of shimmers in basic browns, along with a warm copper, a light yellow, a silvery gray green, a vivid leafy green, and a warm reddish brown and blue duochrome, which is definitely the most unique shade in the palette. Every shade packs a super-pigmented shimmery punch, applying better than many high-end shadows. This is especially true for the leafy green and the brown and blue duo-chrome, both of which are absolutely stunning, either swatched or on the eyes.

Although matte lovers might not want to pack just this palette for travel, the Comfort Zone palette gives you everything you need to create both basic and fun looks while you're traveling. I like to use an angled brush to apply the dark brown shades as liners, with a lighter shimmer shade popped onto my lid. Unlike the earlier palettes on this list, Comfort Zone contains a few pops of color, including a green and a bright copper, but the overall color range is, as the title suggests, comfortably neutral, consisting mostly of browns and beiges.

Unfortunately, this palette does not come with a mirror, and the included applicators are low quality, including a tiny sponge applicator and an equally tiny, rough and stiff brush. If you pack this palette, be sure to toss in your own brushes and a mirror with it. Also, be sure to pack carefully, as the packaging on this set is more fragile than the other selections on this list. With the price tag under $5 for these gorgeous shadows, minor failings like cheap packaging are to be expected. However, with the money you've saved buying this instead of more expensive comparable shadows, you can go out and buy a decent set of brushes and still end up getting one heck of a bargain.

Perfect for: Someone on a budget, or anyone who loves pigmented shimmers in neutral and earthy tones, as long as you don't mind packing your own mirror and eye shadow brushes.

This Bare Minerals eyeshadow palette was my very first high-end palette, and I was so impressed by how buttery and pigmented the shimmer shades were. This palette includes a shimmery taupe (Hot Commodity), rose gold (In the Buff), and dusty rose (Bare Skin) to die for. The other colors are also high quality, with a buttery texture and easy application. They include a light neutral shimmer (Nude Beach), a matte beige (Natural), pale pink (Pure), and cream (celebrate), and a very deep brown (Perspective). The palette also contains a small double-ended eye shadow brush, with one dense side for packing on color and another narrow side for lining or smoking out liner. Since the brush is so tiny, it works well for detailed application of eye shadow. Other nice bonuses include a large, high-quality mirror and sleek, simple rose gold packaging. The fact that the mirror stands up on its own makes on-the-go application as easy as possible.

In the swatches below, you may notice that some of the lighter mattes are difficult to see when swatched on fair skin. However, these matte shades can be nice for setting eye shadow primer, highlighting the brow bone, or blending out the edges of darker shades. I also imagine that these shades would show up much more dramatically on darker or more olive-toned skin.

For the same high-quality formula in a different color range, you can also try Bare Minerals' other eight pan palettes, the cooler toned Posh Neutrals, and the grayer toned Power Neutrals. Posh Neutrals adds a lavender, purple, and blue to an otherwise neutral color range, and Power Neutrals includes a range of grays, taupes, and a yellowy beige.

Perfect for: The chic minimalist. This is a high-quality set with everything you need to create a variety of natural or glam looks, including the mirror and brush.

Definitely the most fun palette on this list, Tarte's Make Believe in Yourself is filled with nine beautiful shimmers and one pinkish-brown matte transition shade. The shimmers include several shades of blue, purple, green, brown, and coral. I like to use my fingers to apply the colors to my lids since this results in the best pigmentation. However, when applied with a brush, the colors go on sheer and shimmery and can be built up for a stronger effect. Worn alone, they can give you some fun, colorful shimmer, or you can add a darker crease color, liner, and highlight for a full shimmery smoky-eyed look.

To supplement the shimmer shades, the included matte color, Myth, can be used as a base or transition shade, but I like to add another palette to the mix so that I can use a matte highlight and a darker shade for liner. The Milani Must Have Naturals palette works really well for this. With a small, simple palette of basics, this palette is a great way to create a variety of colorful, extra shimmery looks on the go.

The palette comes in a round, gold compact about the size of an adult woman's hand, with a beautiful pink, purple, and blue watercolor design on the lid. It contains a sizable mirror and a white highlight shade in the middle of the ten eye shadows—all of which smell like heavenly vanilla. You’ll have to pack your own brushes with this set. I would recommend a densely bristled eyeshadow brush for picking up the eyeshadows, which can be a bit difficult to do if you want intense color, and a larger brush for highlighting with, such as a fan brush or a setting brush.

Perfect for: Lovers of sparkle and color who don't mind tossing another palette into their bag for mattes and neutrals.

Since the Tarte Make Believe in Yourself palette also smells of delicious vanilla bean, it may be cheating to include a second vanilla Tarte palette under the category of "Best Smelling," but I couldn't resist including this adorably packaged palette of basics with a knock-your-socks-off gold (Boss Lady), a gorgeous metallic coral (Strive), and one of the most pigmented light matte shades to feature on this list (Rock On).

If you're a fan of warm pinks and browns, enjoy working with metallics, and like to have a variety of matte and shimmery highlighting shades on hand, then Don't Quit Your Daydream is the travel palette for you. True to the name, this palette is mostly filled with lighter colors and, therefore, best for daytime looks, although the shimmery shades can be combined with the dark brown (Werk) in the crease and outer corner for a smokier nighttime look.

In addition to seven pigmented warm neutral shadow shades (three matte and four shimmer), the palette contains a sheer creamy yellow highlight (Shine On) in a bigger pan than the others, which will allow for more regular use over a larger area of the face, such as cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, or the cupid’s bow. It also features a full-sized mirror for easy application on the go, although you’ll have to prop this up yourself, as the palette does not stay open unless it’s held that way. There is not an included brush, so you’ll want to pack some eyeshadow brushes as well. I recommend a dense one for packing on color, a fluffy one for blending, and an angled brush for applying liner.

Perfect for: Anyone who loves a warm, natural look—and golds that packs a real metallic, pigmented punch!

I enjoy reviewing makeup, accessories, and bringing others out of their shells by helping them discover their individual styles.

This article explores everything you need to know about magnetic eyelashes. Learn how to make the most out of your eyelashes.

Magnetic Eyelashes for a Beautiful Look

Being obsessed with all things beauty-related, I was very interested in the new trend of magnetic eyelashes.

For those of you unfamiliar with the product, magnetic eyelashes are strip lashes that temporarily adhere to your own lashes, not with glue but with the scientific power of teeny-tiny magnets. You just sandwich your upper lash between the two strips, and there you have it—romantic, fluttery, long dark lashes that photograph like a dream! They are about half the length of a full strip of false lashes.

Before and After Magnetic Eyelash Application

Before is on the top, after on the bottom. Nice, right?

theclevercat

The knockoff eyelashes arrived in a cheap but sturdy plastic case.

theclevercat

So I took a chance and bought a few sets of an inexpensive, not original branded product. Surprisingly, they arrived from China within two weeks of ordering and I ripped open the package as soon as I could. I was met with a few strips of dark, elongated, somewhat curled manmade fibers stuck to several staples in a small, hinged, plastic box… highfalutin packaging this was not. But I was game, and interested in finding out if they would be as good as I hoped.

Here are some of my observations:

Magnetic Lash Application and Removal

The first time I attempted to place these, I had a heck of a time. One eye seemed ok, but then I couldn’t get the other side to match. So I would remove and try again. This went on for about 20 minutes. I tried using my fingers as well as a set of tweezers but it was troublesome. In sending the before-and-after pictures to family and friends, my very honest mom even mentioned that one side looked like I had a spider crawling on it. But the next day I had no trouble.

It takes a little time to learn where to place these correctly. They are not the length of a full lash strip/full length of one’s eye and cannot bend due to the location of the magnet, which on these was smack in the middle. Therefore, the user must determine where to put them for the look they want. The pieces are manufactured to be placed toward the outer half of the eye, but even a smidgen too far to the outer corner results in an extreme doll-like, anime-esque style especially for someone with almond-shaped eyes like me–not exactly the look for which I was going.

Be sure to place the magnetic lashes as close to the lash line as possible. Angle them slightly toward the outer corner of the eye for a more natural look. Once I figured out where to place them, I was really pleased with the outcome.

By the third day I was able to situate them correctly the first time and thus ending up saving makeup time by not even needing to bother with eyeliner. In fact, over the next week the lashes softened somewhat, making them easier to apply.

I also have no problem removing them–I slide my fingers against them like I'm playing the world’s smallest violin and they come off with ease. But once on, they’re not going anywhere… even when I squeezed my eyes closed during a surprise sneezefest they didn’t feel like they would fly off.

Before application on the left and after on the right. Please forgive the different lighting.

The Look of the Lashes

Once you master the application of these bad boys, wearing these lashes becomes really addicting. They add a mysterious layer to your look, even without any other eye makeup. If eyes are the windows of the soul, then eyelashes are the draperies. And who wants boring drapes?

I really love the way the magnetic lashes make my eyes look... larger and younger without any eyeliner. They give depth to my eyes without needing to apply or remove any itchy glue.

I also tried wearing them at the far corners and close to the edge of my lashes for a night for amusement, and although I nailed the glamorous Marilyn Monroe look in photos, the people I showed were less than impressed as the lashes simply looked far too fake that way. For a fun anime or costumed look, I will stick with ordinary false lashes and glue, thank you. (Get it? Stick? Haha.)

Lash Comfort and Weight

In the hand, they obviously weigh almost nothing. Situated upon, however, there is a definite weight. It’s not quite a drag on the eye, and not uncomfortable either, but you can definitely tell that there is something atop your natural lashes.

I am also able to actually see the magnet above my eye. If I look up at the lashes, I can see what appears to be a heavy shadow. It’s a little distracting sometimes but not painful in any way, and unfortunately they didnt shield any of the sun's rays when I went outside.

In fact, I was very concerned that the lashes would bump into my prescription sunglasses but was very happy to discover that there was plenty of clearance between the lashes and my lenses.

Cost of Magnetic Eyelashes

At approximately $12 per set (the website where I bought them had a buy two, get one free deal) it was certainly worth it. However, they only came in one color (black) and one basic style. The originals come in three styles (original, bold, and accent) and they are significantly more expensive at two sets for about $70. However, now that I know how great the cheapies are, I will consider the nicer ones too, the next time I have enough funds in my beauty basket.

Recommendations and Comments About Magnetic Eyelashes

In my opinion, a coat of mascara on one’s own lashes makes it easier to place the magnetic ones, so try both ways and see what you think. I’d love to hear about your experiences with these lashes. I also found that curling my natural lashes pre-mascara made the false lash application easier. Why not share your findings in the comments?

I noticed on the originals that one magnet is placed in the center while its match is placed about a third of the way down the strip. In these knockoffs the magnet is directly in the middle of both the upper and lower strips. The originals also appear more graceful and natural looking due to the way they have been shaped and trimmed. I may play around with scissorwith this pair since I do have the extra sets after all, and because there seems to be a tiny bit of flip at the inner edge of the lashes that I think would improve the look if removed.

At certain angles it does look like I have a double lash line because of the way the lashes curve, but it’s not unattractive. In addition, there are plenty of sites offering different styles, and I would love to mix and match sets... for example, one set of long thin with one set of shorter, thicker ones. I think a single strip of each could look pretty close to natural, if one had the funds and time to experiment.

All in all, the magnetic lashes are a bit theatrical but a good use of beauty funds if you like a strong lash look and are tired of constantly fighting with that sticky, messy eyelash glue.

<![CDATA[8 Common Mascara Mistakes]]>https://bellatory.com/makeup/Common-Mascara-Mistakeshttps://bellatory.com/makeup/Common-Mascara-MistakesTue, 09 May 2017 15:35:40 GMTLearn about common mascara mistakes and how to fix them.

Linda Sarhan has been a freelance writer and researcher for 20+ years and has a B.A. in English and creative writing.

Approximately $80 billion is spent each year in the United States on cosmetics according to the Global Cosmetic Industry. The U.S. Census data and Simmons National Consumer Survey (NHCS) noted that out of the 341.4 million people in the United States, 118.6 million people use mascara.

Most people have no idea that they are either using their mascara incorrectly, or that old and mishandled mascara puts them at risk of various infections and illnesses caused by microbes, including parasites. Some of the common infections people suffer from when using mascara incorrectly include staphylococcus, streptococcus, micrococcus, and E. coli.

1. Keeping Mascara Too Long

Some mascara seems to last forever, right? Wrong! It actually has an expiration date. In fact, you should toss any opened mascara if you have had it for more than three to six months. Not only does it begin drying out but there is no telling what microorganisms have been growing inside that dark tube of mascara. Also, if you have had an eye infection recently, it is best to toss away the old mascara tube and buy another one to reduce the risk of reoccurring infections.

2. Sharing Mascara

Perhaps it is girls’ night out and a friend has a new and amazing mascara to show everyone or maybe someone in the group forgot their mascara and wants to borrow yours. Sounds alright, right? False! Dr. Jessica Weiser, a board-certified dermatologist in New York, says that a mascara tube is the perfect breeding ground for not only bacteria and viruses but fungus as well. Even if you and your friend practice excellent hygiene habits, sharing mascara or any makeup with anyone can lead to irritation and infections. Just because a strain of microorganisms doesn’t affect the owner of the mascara, it may irritate and cause problems for another person.

There is something else to consider that may make you think twice before sharing mascara again—eyelash mites. According to Consumer Health Digest, over 80% of Americans have eyelash mites. They are microscopic and most people do not even realize they are there. However, do you really want to run the risk of transferring them?

So, if you are used to sharing makeup, especially mascara—stop!

3. Pumping the Mascara

Some people will take the wand of the mascara and pump it into the tube with an up and down motion. This is a mascara mistake that not only ruins the integrity of the product but will put your mascara a greater risk of bacteria growth. First, by pumping the wand in the tube, you allow more air to enter the tube. This can quickly dry out the mascara and cause a clumping effect. Secondly, bacteria is all around us, including airborne bacteria. Bacteria thrives in moist places. Put the two together and you have a greater risk for eye infections.

4. Not Curling the Lashes

Another common mistake most women make is not curling their lashes. By curling your lashes, you will give an appearance of volume to your lashes. However, be sure to curl your lashes before you apply mascara. If you curl your lashes after applying mascara, you run the risk of damaging your lovely lashes.

5. Not Wiping the Brush

Most women don’t consider wiping the brush before applying it to the lashes. However, it is a good way to reduce clumping when applying mascara. The reason why you should wipe the mascara wand is because most of the time the wand exits the tube with more than enough mascara. There are three methods used for wiping the wand:

 1. Use a clean tissue. Just a gentle swipe along all side of the wand will suffice. This is the most sanitary way to wipe the mascara wand.
 2. The back of your hand. Not personally fond of this method because of how quickly our hands get dirty with microbes but if you prefer this method be sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water before using this method.
 3. Use the top of the tube. Again, not fond of this method. Sure, we all want to save money but this method tends to expose the entire mascara tube to potential bacteria growth. You aren’t really saving money if you pay for a doctor visit and eye medication for an infection.

Avon's Big & Multiplied Volume Mascara

6. Not Applying Mascara Properly

Most people simply pull out the mascara wand and with one or several swipes upward they apply the mascara. Many also become frustrated because they don’t have the glamorous lashes advertised and often deal with clumpy lashes. Here is how to apply mascara properly and reduce clumpy, not so glamorous, lashes.

 1. Windshield wiper effect. After wiping off the excess mascara from the wand, gently use a windshield wiper effect across the tips of the lashes.
 2. Wiggle, wiggle. Take the mascara wand and start at the base of the lashes. Now wiggle the wand sided to side working your way up to the tips. Remember, if you dip the mascara wand back in the tube, be sure to wipe the excess mascara off the wand.
 3. Top of the lashes (optional). For added coverage and volume, some close their eye and use the same wiggle effect on the top of the lashes as well.
 4. Go verticle. For the bottom lashes, you should use the wand vertically to add just an accent of mascara. Do not over do it on the bottom lashes.

7. Less Is More

Some people seem to think the more mascara they use the more volume their lashes will have. Wrong! Continuing to add more and more coats of mascara can create a heavy clump effect that is quite the opposite of volume lashes.

Avon True Color Moisturizing Eye Makeup Remover Lotion

8. Not Removing Mascara Before Sleeping

Always remove any traces of mascara before falling asleep. Falling asleep with mascara or any other eye makeup on can cause eye irritation and possibly infections. Mascara particles can clog glands and create red, irritated eyes along with painful eye infections. Even still, these particles can cause corneal abrasions, which are small cuts on the surface of the eye itself.

A great product to use to remove mascara, especially waterproof mascara and other eye makeup is Avon’s True Color Moisturizing Eye Makeup Remover Lotion. Just dab a drop onto a cotton ball and gently wipe away the day or night’s makeup with minimal effort but maximum results.

These are just the most common mistakes people make when using mascara. There are much more makeup mistakes than makeup trends committed around the world but to each their own when it comes to style. The primary things to consider with mascara use is the prevention of eye infections and knowing the basics of how to apply mascara correctly. The rest is just individual preference.

Up Your Lash Game

I love the look of false eyelashes as much as the next girl. When you crave that dramatic volume and length, sometimes it's the only way to go.

However, I have watched my daughter putting on those false eyelashes, and they are very time-consuming. Who really has all that time to invest in just eyelashes? I barely have enough time to take a shower.

I have discovered a very simple beauty routine that does not take very much time and will instantly up your lash game. You'll get those va-va-voom lashes, and there's no need to worry about whether your lashes will stay on all night because they're your lashes.

To remove them, all you need is a little makeup remover before bed. There is no tugging or ripping required.

Gina Hulse

So Which Mascara Gives the False Lash Effect?

The effect of false lashes can be game-changing, whether worn alone or with a dramatic smoky eye. Sometimes (or most times), however, we're just too lazy to deal with all that messy glue and waiting around for it to get perfectly tacky. I know I am.

There are quite a few brands on the market that claim to give a false-lash effect, but I have not found one that gives me the effect that I desired until I found the two-step Physician's Formula Kit.

Of course, no mascara is going to be able to add new lashes like a pair of falsies will (especially depending on the type), but ones that include fiber, expanding, or tubing technologies can come close to mimicking the added volume and length.

Author's natural eye. I started to lose my eyelashes due to illness. I really needed some help, as regular mascara did nothing.

Gina Hulse

2 Products and 3 Simple Steps

The Physician's Formula lash kit features two products:

 1. Mascara
 2. Fibers

I always start off by separating my lashes. Still, sometimes no matter how hard we try to prevent it, mascara can make lashes clump together. Just make sure to comb through them with a spoolie after application to ensure your lashes aren't sticking together.

One full application consists of:

 1. applying one coat of mascara
 2. applying one coat of fibers
 3. then applying another coat of mascara

In this way, the fibers are attached to the lashes by being sandwiched between two coats of mascara.

Detailed Instructions

 1. Swipe each section, all the way from your inner, to your outer lashes with the mascara. Using the tip ensures that you can catch every single lash and build them up.
 2. After applying the mascara, apply the fibers to the mascara while still wet. You will be able to see the fibers attaching to the ends of your lashes and making them beautiful and long.
 3. Once you've applied the fibers, you will then apply another coat of the mascara to seal the fibers onto your lashes.
 4. Don’t forget those bottom lashes! They can really pull a look together.

If you're new at this, you may notice some fibers falling on your cheek during application. I simply brush them off using a makeup brush.

There is definitely a bit of a learning curve with this type of application, and one has to work quickly for the fibers to properly adhere to the mascara. You have to apply the fibers to the lashes when they are still wet.

Something else to keep in mind is that with these types of mascaras, after a fair amount of usage, some fibers will end up in the mascara tube. So far, I have had no issues with clumping, but it is definitely a possibility with more usage.

You can clearly see the before and after effect in this image.

Gina Hulse

Overall, if you're looking for a mascara that can most closely mimic the look of false lashes, a two-step fiber mascara like the Physician's Formula Kit is the way to go.

However, if you don't like the idea of having to use two separate products to achieve full and thick lashes, opt for a regular fiber, tubing, or expanding mascara. Or, of course, you could get really, really good at applying falsies.

Bring Attention to Your Eyes

One of the easiest ways to draw attention to your eyes and create fun, flirty looks is by adding mascara.

Mascara:

 • Is a key component to making your eyes stand out
 • Has the ability to not only make your lashes darker
 • Adds length and thickness
 • Will bring depth to your eyes and open them up

This product is used to color in brows to give them a fuller look.

I love trying new makeup and sharing my opinion on them. I love products that can make me look fabulous.

What Is This Product?

Anastasia Beverly Hills Bro Powder Duo is a pressed powder that people use to fill out their eyebrows. There are 11 different colors to choose from, depending on your skin tone and how dark you want your brows to be.

This product is sold at makeup stores, such as Ulta and Sephora.

It get its name because each pack comes with two different colors. They blend really well together to help you get a flawless look.

Durability

I have been using this product for about seven months and have been extremely satisfied with it. I come from never having done anything with my eyebrows before. My eyebrows are extremely light and thin, so you can barely see them. I was worried that using a product on them would be a huge change and not look natural.

I couldn't have been more wrong. Although it took a little experimenting and a whole lot of practice, I can't imagine not using this product. It has become a staple in my makeup routine. Not only does it make my eyebrows look better, it helps show off my eyes more as well.

As you can see above, this isn't a product that has to leave a huge impression, especially for those who have naturally light brows. You don't want to start going super dark.

This also helps give your brows more shape.

As you can see from the table above, this brow duo is middle of the road in price. Although it may seem expensive, when it comes to makeup, you absolutely get what you pay for. I have had this product for seven months and still haven't even made a dent in it and I use this product almost every day.

Review

Pros

 • Blends well
 • Easy removal
 • Easy to apply
 • Good colors
 • Good pigmentation
 • Good variety of colors
 • Long lasting
 • Smooth look

Best Used For

 • Everyday
 • Going out
 • Sensitive eyes
 • Travel

I have tried other brands but this is the best. Best colors, best application, it does the trick. My eyelashes are pretty thin and this makes them look very natural. My skin tone runs a tan deep, so I got both Soft Brown and Dark Brown shades which are perfect against my complexion. Both colors are good for going natural or pulling off a glam brow, not to mention mixing the shades for an ombre effect. Overall, it has a nice pigmentation that is true to color, has a great variety of shades, and blends very well

<![CDATA[Review of 3 Maybelline Mascaras: Falsies, Full N’ Soft, and Lash Stiletto Waterproof]]>https://bellatory.com/makeup/Review-of-3-Maybelline-Mascaras-Falsies-Full-N-Soft-and-Lash-Stiletto-Waterproofhttps://bellatory.com/makeup/Review-of-3-Maybelline-Mascaras-Falsies-Full-N-Soft-and-Lash-Stiletto-WaterproofFri, 20 Mar 2015 17:33:24 GMTHere are three low-priced drugstore mascaras, all created by Maybelline, reviewed and ranked!

3. Falsies

There is something tempting about the name of this mascara—will it really make you look like you have fake lashes? The answer is, unfortunately, no. I found that this mascara brush, or perhaps the mascara itself, gave my lashes a strange and over-the-top curl with average length and unimpressive volume. Maybe the curl will be better for other lash types, but I don’t think anyone will be too thrilled with the length and volume this mascara gives.

Worst of all, this mascara most definitely pulled out my eyelashes. Every single day I had a quick moment of panic as I realized I was losing around four eyelashes every time I tried to remove the mascara, even when using proper makeup remover and gentle movements.

The price may be fantastic at around $6.00, but the length and volume Falsies creates is probably not worth the lashes you may lose.

I give it 2.5 stars.

2. Lash Stiletto (Waterproof)

I have not been very impressed by much waterproof makeup in the past, and that includes mascara. Most waterproof mascaras don’t provide the same length and volume as non-waterproof versions do. They are dry, so black pieces crumble onto your face, and they are incredibly difficult to remove. Lash Stiletto, however, is most certainly worth putting on your lashes! This waterproof mascara feels a little bit wetter than the standard waterproof, but even better, the length it gives is mind-blowing! This is some of the BEST lengthening mascara I have ever used, even though it is waterproof!

Admittedly, the volume isn’t as remarkable, and it is still difficult to remove since it is waterproof. There are definitely better non-waterproof mascaras out there, and even waterproof mascaras, for volume. The length, however, tops every mascara I’ve ever tested. At a measly $4.00, this mascara is worth the purchase for those times you need something waterproof. Your confidence at the pool or beach will shoot through the ceiling along with your lashes.

Four stars.

1. Full N’ Soft

In my book, this is the drugstore mascara that could pass for a high-end one. I have used both the regular version and the waterproof version of this lash lengthener and have been blown away by the results both deliver. The volume is incredible, and the length is awesome. It is also easily layered and doesn’t clump up easily. Both versions are relatively easy to remove, and I never felt like I was pulling my eyelashes out—even when taking off the waterproof version.

The best part of this drugstore mascara is that it only costs around $6.00. So if you’re sick of your drugstore mascaras because you’re not getting the length and volume that you need to complete your look, and thinking about switching up to a pricier brand, give Maybelline’s Full N’ Soft a try first. I don’t think there’s a better mascara for the price.

5 stars.

<![CDATA[Eyeliner 101: How to Apply Eyeliner for Beginners]]>https://bellatory.com/makeup/Eyeliner-101-A-How-to-for-Beginnershttps://bellatory.com/makeup/Eyeliner-101-A-How-to-for-BeginnersFri, 06 Jun 2014 11:10:07 GMTThe basics of applying eyeliner for beginners, such as: how to position your eye when applying eyeliner, different techniques, and some awesome tips!

I love sharing my favorite makeup products with others. I enjoy products that make me feel fabulous.

You've either just discovered that this awesome cosmetic exists, or have finally decided to give it a shot and overcome your fear of pencils near your eyes. Either way, searching online for how to apply eyeliner can be a daunting task. Endless lists of the varieties of eyeliner and different application processes for each can seem overwhelming. It doesn't have to be though. In this article, we're going to take some baby steps and go over the absolute basics of applying eyeliner, and before you know it, you'll be a pro!

Where to Start

First, you have to choose which eyeliner you want to apply. If this is your first time applying eyeliner, it'll be easier for you to do so with a standard pencil eyeliner. These are more forgiving if you have shaky hands or if you're just starting out and mess up a little bit. With a liquid eyeliner, you move your eye, and suddenly there's a whole line across your eyelid, whereas with a pencil eyeliner, there will more than likely be just a tiny smudge.

All you need are:

 • This article
 • A mirror
 • A pencil eyeliner
 • Make-up remover

I use the make-up remover wipes because they're easy, you can use them more than once, and they are miraculously never too wet. Any make-up remover you prefer will work though.

Do not wait until you are getting ready to walk out the door or after you have already applied all your other makeup to do this. You want to make sure you have time to play with it a little bit and get the look you want. For some people, that might happen the first time you ever touch an eyeliner pencil. For others, it might take a few tries. If it takes a few tries, you're just going to wind up wiping off your other makeup in the process of wiping off the eyeliner. If you're on your way out the door, you might feel a bit rushed and that can make this a little more difficult. So, take a minute, turn up some music, and have fun with it!

If you tilt your head back slightly and close your eyes just a tiny bit, you can see your upper eyelid, and it's really easy.
Place your finger at the corner of your eye and pull outwards, making the skin taut. Another variation of this is to pull the skin outwards and upwards. Either way will work great!

How to Position Your Eye

Now that it's time to actually put on the eyeliner, take a seat in front of your mirror (with your laptop, eyeliner, and make-up remover) and look at your reflection. I've never heard of anyone looking straight in the mirror to apply eyeliner. It doesn't work out well. A very common way to apply eyeliner is to tilt your head back and look into the mirror. This way, your eyes are partially closed so that your eyelid is exposed but partially open so that you can see your eyelid.

This isn't easy for everyone to do. Another great way to start out is to close one eye, similar to when you're applying eye shadow, and keep the other eye is open so that you can see what you're doing. After you close the one eye, take the hand you won't be applying eyeliner with and pull the corner of your eye outwards, making the eyelid tighter. If the eyelid is taut, it will be easier to apply the eyeliner.

A third option is a combination of the two. You tilt your head back, looking down, and pull the skin on the outside of your eyelid tighter at the same time. Your eye will still be open, allowing you to see more, and the eyelid will be in a position that makes this pretty simple.

The second method is easier for me to apply pencil eyeliner, while the first is easier for me to apply liquid eyeliner. Try them out and see which one works best for you! (I know it sounds like a lot, but if you try out all three, it really only takes less than about two minutes.)

Applying the Eyeliner

For beginners, there are two basic ways to apply eyeliner. One way is to start by making dots along the upper lid. After you have made the dots, you simply connect them.

The second easiest way is to simply start in the middle of the upper lid and draw the line outward. After that, you start toward the inner corner of your eye and work your way to the middle in small, even strokes until you have done the upper lid.

That Bottom Line You Missed

Once you have put on the eyeliner, it's very common to look in the mirror and realize there is a fine line right above your eyelashes that is completely bare (this is especially likely if you applied it with your eye closed all of the way). That's ok.

Simply position your eye the same way you did to apply the eyeliner, and apply the eyeliner across that line. Most people find that it is easier to hold the pencil from the above to apply eyeliner the first time, then to angle it from below while finishing this little line.

Tips for Your Bottom Lid

 • Using black on both the top and bottom is great for a dramatic look
 • Using a softer color on the bottom will create a softer, more feminine look
 • Remember to connect your top and bottom eyeliner at the outer corner

The Bottom Lid

Now that you have mastered the top lid, it's time to do the bottom lid. Some people leave the bottom lid with no eyeliner, some prefer to only apply eyeliner on the outer half, and others do the entire bottom lid.

If you choose to apply any, firsts slightly pull your bottom lid tight with the hand you won't be using. Draw a line along the bottom lid with the same method you found easiest for the top lid.

That's It!

See, that wasn't so hard! If it was a little more challenging than you thought, keep practicing, and you'll be a pro in no time! If you can do it with a basic eyeliner pencil, simply use the same technique you used with the pencil for other varieties of eyeliner, such as liquid eyeliner.

Tips for Wearing Eyeliner

 • Apply your eyeliner after your eye shadow and before your mascara. If you apply eyeliner before eye shadow, the eye shadow will cover the eyeliner. You may not be able to see it well if at all depending on the color of your eye shadow. Applying mascara last will make sure that the combination of your eyeliner and mascara isn't too dark.
 • Always take some time to play with new looks you're creating with eyeliner to ensure you get the look you want every time.
 • If you have small or close-set eyes, applying eyeliner all the way around can make them appear smaller and/or closer together. Instead, try only lining half of your bottom lid.
 • You can help set your eyeliner by using a powder of the same color family, and simply pushing it into the eyeliner with a small, firm brush.
 • Don't go all the way to your tear duct. Your eyes water naturally as the day goes on, which can cause your eyeliner to smudge, smear, and clump.

Great Products to Begin With

The NYX Mechanical Eye Pencil is a great eyeliner pencil if this is your first time applying it. It goes on as smoothly as velvet, just like a liquid eyeliner, but is very easy to apply, just like a pencil eyeliner.

Revlon ColorStay Liquid Eyeliner has an easy-to-use applicator and will last for quite a while. Unlike many in eyeliners, there is no glitter added, and I have never suddenly discovered I have raccoon eyes at the end of the day. I first got some eyeliner like this in my Ipsy bag, and I instantly fell in love. This small bottle will also last you a few months, at least. This is an amazing eyeliner for the price and ease of use.

I suffered from cosmetic allergies for many years and have done expensive research to find the right makeup for me. I hope this helps you!

The Best Makeup for Sensitive Eyes.

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, there were 5,144 consumer complaints submitted to the United States Food and Drug Administration between 2004 and 2016, regarding adverse effects from personal care and beauty products, including eye makeup.

You might have been stung by the bad beauty bug yourself. I was too. But after years of suffering from stinging, watery, and even painful eyes, I have found what has turned out, for me, to be the best makeup for sensitive eyes.

Below are my product recommendations and what I regularly use for mascara, eyeliner, eye shadow, and foundation. These are all based on personal trial and error.

I used to be able to wear all cosmetic products and brands of makeup with no ocular problems, but that changed when I was about 33, and even more so after I started wearing contact lenses.

One night, after about 20 minutes of putting my cosmetics on for a night out with friends, my eyes began to feel irritated, itchy, and after about an hour I had painful pressure, stinging and redness in my eyes. My night was ruined, but more importantly, that was the beginning of an expensive three-year search for non-irritating cosmetics.

But I found what has worked for me, and I hope these cosmetics are the answer to your beauty prayers too. After all, beauty shouldn't sting.

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Waterproof Mascara

The Best Mascara for Sensitive Eyes

After a long and difficult search of many popular mascara brands I chose La Roche-Posay Toleriane Waterproof Mascara.

 • It has given me no eye irritation whatsoever. Lashes have a moist, glossy look and won't clump.
 • Waterproof. This is a difficult feature to find in mascara formulations if you have sensitivity in your eye area. If you are prone to occasional tears, like me, this mascara will help you keep those raccoon eyes away.
 • No flaking. Mascara that flakes often gets into the corners of the eyes and aggravates ocular tissue. This used to be a big problem for me because I also wear contacts. And I would tend to get tiny clumps of mascara sitting behind the lens as well. Not a problem with this formula!
 • Three-dimensional coverage for thick lashes using a perfectly sized applicator.
 • Contains no fragrances or parabens.
 • Ophthalmologist and allergy-tested for user safety.

Sensitive Eye Poll

View the original article to see embedded media.
Jane Iredale Naturally Matte Eyeshadow Kit

The Best Eye Shadow For Sensitive Eyes

My pick is the Jane Iredale Naturally Matte Eyeshadow Kit as it comes with five neutral colors that work for year-round looks. It's been hard for me to find full kits like this designed for sensitive eyes, but I especially love it because I sometimes apply one color on my lid, or blend them for a unique look. I like to blend the included colors as follows:

Palette Left to right:

 • Buttercream (creamy neutral, great for the brow bone area for shaping effects, and as a base shade)
 • Hush (baby pink, ideal for the lid)
 • Slate Brown (greyish brown, perfect for the outer crease)
 • Eggplant (rosy brown, ideal for the lid)
 • Fudge (deep cocoa, another great color for the outer crease area)

The best benefits of this palette are:

 • No allergic reaction experienced. This might be due to the limited amount of carefully mixed ingredients this palette has compared to many commercial brands.
 • Comes in a mirrored compact. I touch up my eye shadow anywhere!
 • Comes with a quad eye shadow applicator. I notice many eye shadow palettes are leaving the applicators out these days. I don't enjoy having to remember to carry them separately!
 • Matte colors for daytime -- perfect for school and work, where shiny colors are out of place or discouraged. This line of kits is also available with shine for evening wear, such as the Naturally Glam version.
 • Long wear -- I have not had to touch up the eye shadow even after hours of wear. The colors do not fade into my skin.

I find this kit to be ideal for me because I am not always skilled at blending separate eye shadow colors. In the past I've have favorite colors across different brands, but using them together does not always look right. This palette already comes with all the complementary colors necessary for blending and creating that put-together look!

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner

The Best Eyeliner for Sensitive Eyes

Although I've tried a number of sensitive formula eyeliners, I found Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner to be extra-gentle.

 • While Intense Black is a popular choice, I chose the dark brown shade to better complement my fair skin tone.
 • This eyeliner's extra thin micro-tip makes it easier for me to apply the makeup without overdrawing or drawing my lines too thick, helping prevent slipping the tip onto sensitive eye tissue.
 • The formula is waterproof to help prevent concerns with eye flare-ups.
 • Although I was originally concerned about trying a liquid eyeliner because I was worried about streaks, this product has a smudge-free and run-free formula, and stayed securely on my lid exactly where I applied it.
 • The thin tip also allows me to paint eyeliner between my lashes, also making my eyelashes appear larger before applying mascara.
 • I had no eye irritation from any fumes or ingredients or chemical reactions on my skin or mucus membranes.
 • The tube is narrow, so I found it easier to grasp as it has a smaller barrel to hold on to.
 • Because this product goes on smoothly it helped prevent any skin irritation by not stretching my eyelid.
 • If you enjoy night clubs or parties the fine drawing tip will allow you to make artful eye designs with precision to help you stand out.

This Stila eyeliner is an overall good choice because you can glide on as much or as little product as you need, for both casual and extravagant evening looks.

The Best Foundation for Sensitive Eyes

You might be surprised to see foundation listed. But since you apply it all over your face, including right outside your eyes, your eyes can become inflamed very easily if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the product or your eyes react to the subtle fumes in the makeup. This means the product never has to actually get in your eye area to affect you.

Origins Stay Tuned Balancing Face Makeup

 • I cannot say enough good things about this foundation. Least of all is that I experienced no eye irritation from it.
 • From a cosmetic point of view, this product is amazing. I have large pores, and this foundation actually makes my face look smooth and almost non-porous. I will use this for life.
 • Doesn't feel cakey on the skin.

Overall Popular Brands

Users on makeup review sites have commented that the following brands have helped prevent ocular irritation:

 • Jane Iredale
 • Prescriptives (now only available online)
 • Dr. Hauschka
 • Origins
 • La Roche-Posay
 • Physicians Formula

Tip: If you are trying to save money on cosmetics, it can be helpful to buy cheaper lipstick and lip liner since they will not affect your eyes. This will allow you to splurge on suitable eye makeup.

Notes:

 • To see if any makeup product bothers your eyes, wear it by itself in your home for a few hours. This way you can distinguish if it will affect you or not. If you have luck, try sticking to the same line for your next cosmetic purchase. And so on.
 • You can develop an eye allergy to a cosmetic at any time, even after years of use.
 • The products I recommend are not guaranteed to not irritate your eyes. Everyone responds differently to cosmetic ingredients. The information in this article is based on personal experience only.
 • I do not have medical experience and suggest you speak to your eye doctor before applying new cosmetics if you have a medical condition.

Why Do Some Cosmetics Irritate the Eyes?

The Food & Drug Administration recognizes over 10,000 possible ingredients in cosmetics. While beauty companies and the FDA try to do a good job to ensure safety, there is simply no way to ensure all ingredients will be comfortable for all wearers. I have found in my experience that the cheaper cosmetics are the worst culprits. I consider my makeup to be a small investment to help me both look and feel good!

I hope these suggestions work for you and allow you to wear makeup freely again!

Eyeliner should not be feared and yet it is by many women so let me give you some well choosen tips and advice on eyeliners. Here I show you how easily a soft natural look is achieved by applying loose powder with a good eyeliner brush.

I have worked as a beauty therapist, a freelance makeup artist, and a retail store manager for a fashion, beauty, and crafts store.

powder eyeliner adds definition along the eyelashes which makes the eyes a more prominent facial feature.

Eyeliners

If you are wondering how to apply eyeliner correctly, rest assured that it is not difficult when you use the right tools and methods.

There are many different types of eyeliners available commercially, including liquid eyeliner, gel eyeliner and pencil or kohl liners. Increasingly popular are the permanent liners or eyeliner tattoo.

Yes, the world of eyeliners has moved on since it was first worn thousands of years ago in the Ancient Middle Eastern countries in the form of black kohl heavily applied lining the eyes.

It was thanks to the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb in the 1920s that eyeliner was discovered and why it has been a much-loved makeup essential for men and women ever since.

Feared and loved it is a cosmetic product that quite often divides public opinion.

Experiment With Eyeliner Color

Eyeliner Styles

Whilst the traditional lining of the eyes remains, the different techniques through the ages have brought us some memorable eyeliner styles which have also become symbolic of an era, culture or fashion trend.

Where would Punk or Goth Fashion be without the heavy black eyeliner?

The 1950s saw the use of black eyeliner on the upper lid only and worn with a dramatic red lipstick. A stunning look that keeps coming back and is an iconic look.

The 1960s Mary Quant days of liquid black eyeliner would not have existed and subsequently not brought us so many iconic looks and fashion statements of that era that are legendary had it not been for this eye classic.

As a Make Up Artist, eyeliner (along with mascara) is my must-have, much loved cosmetic essential both on a professional and personal level.

I could live without the other color cosmetic products but for me, eyeliner and mascara work wonders for the eyes no matter what shape, size or eye color.

It’s all about experimenting and practicing.

Pick a look you are comfortable wearing.

All too often I have seen unhappy clients being made up like "a dogs dinner" in a makeup that does nothing for them and does not make them feel good. I have phone calls at the eleventh hour from a frantic friend or work colleague pleading with me to fix their disaster. No excuse is acceptable in my opinion of any beauty professional or make up artist who allows a client to leave unhappy.

You can create subtle eye makeup or a more dramatic look, the choice is yours and powder eyeliner will give you the versatility to change your looks easily and quickly.

First, let’s take a look at why we should use loose powder eyeliner.

Advantages of Loose Powder Eyeliner

 • No special eyeliner needed, use powder eyeshadow.
 • It quickly turns into heavier and sharper liquid eyeliner when mixed with water.
 • No limitation on color choice.
 • You do not need to be an expert.
 • Cost Effective saves you money!
 • Even if you are a confirmed pencil or liquid eyeliner fan and have run out, this is a quick and effective way of having eyeliner without having to go for a mad late night dash to the store.
 • Great for soft natural looks and ideal for the novice eyeliner recruits.
 • Easier to fix any mistakes than gel, pen or liquid waterproof eyeliner.
 • Easier to apply if you have a shaky hand.
 • A great way of using up any dark powder shadows you may have unused in a set of colors. We all end up with at least one or two we feel we cannot wear, and they are usually the navy, black or dark grey.

Precision Eyeliner

create the winged effect eye liner by adding water to your loose powder which gives a dramatic intense color. Great for party looks.

How to Apply Eyeliner

To apply loose powder eyeliner you will need to start with a few tools at the ready. Remember, you do not need to be an expert or break into a cold sweat thinking of eyeliner. When applied correctly, it suits EVERYBODY!

 • Loose powder eyeshadow: Dark brown, teal, dark green, navy, grey and black are all great colors to use.
 • Eyeliner brush: My tip is to use the slanted tip eyeliner brush which has a smudger at the other end which I find the best and use the most. You can use the pointed precision tip brush if you prefer or are used to using it. Using an eyeliner brush is a must and is essential for a well-applied eyeliner. Looking after your eyeliner brush is easy with a homemade makeup brush cleanser which cleans all your makeup brushes easily, effectively and is chemical-free.
 • Q-tips: Good for smudging out eyeliner, picking up any loose powder that may fall onto the cheek and for fixing any minor mistakes.
 • Good Mirror: A bathroom mirror is great or else a good dressing table mirror that you will be able to get up close to. Make sure you have enough light.

Makeup Ideas From a Large Palette of Colors

the more eyeshadows you have the more color choices for eyeliner styles and eye makeup you have.

Applying Eyeliner

Remember the golden rule it is easier to add than it is to take off and build up color and intensity gradually. This will avoid overloading the brush and wasting product. Don't worry should you make any mistakes, we all do.

If wearing eyeshadow, apply it before your eyeliner.

Take your brush and lightly pick up your loose powder eyeliner. Tap off the excess into the eyeshadow container.

The top line:

 • With your eye closed, start at the inner part of the upper lid as close to the eyelash roots as possible.
 • Draw a line across in one go or in small dots across and then join up. Go over again and build up color intensity gradually.
 • Extend the eyeliner to just past the eye and finish in a flicked up line for a cat's eye look.

Under the Eye:

 • Place your brush about a third of the way across as close to the roots of the eyelashes as possible.
 • Apply eyeliner in one stroke to the outer corner of the eye or apply in 3 dots, joining up the dots.
 • Use your brush to spread and blend the shadow under the eye keeping it to a fine line.
 • Extend the line to where it meets the upper eyeliner.
 • Apply more eyeliner on the outer third of the eye if you wish to make a more dramatic thicker line for big eyes. Small eyes will look better with a thin line.
 • Avoid applying on the inside of the eye as it is unhygienic and will smear quicker.

Hi vespa,

I find it terrific and a great alternative if you want a softer but lined look. More often than not I wear liner and mascara but no eyeshadow particularly during the day. Grey is a great shade to use, softer than black but looks just as good. Black can be a harsh color and easily overdone hence the panda eye effect!! Have fun experimenting!

The ones we see most often in the cosmetic industry are: Liquid eyeliners, Felt-tip eyeliner, Gel or Cream eyeliner, Kohl Pencil Eyeliner, Kajal Eyeliner, Regular pencil eyeliner, Mechanical twist-up eyeliner, Eyeshadow. All of them are separated into different categories that are designed for different uses around the eye.

When to Use Which Eyeliner

There are many varieties of eyeliner on the market today. Unfortunately for us, there is no omnipotent eyeliner out there, all of them are separated into different categories that are designed for different uses around the eye. These are the ones we see most often in the cosmetic industry.

Most Common Eyeliners in the Cosmetic Industry

 • Liquid eyeliners (brush applicator)
 • Felt-tip eyeliner (also called art liner)
 • Gel or Cream eyeliner
 • Kohl Pencil Eyeliner
 • Kajal Eyeliner
 • Regular pencil eyeliner
 • Mechanical twist-up eyeliner
 • Eyeshadow (used as eyeliner)

If you are concerned about any ingredients you see on an eyeliner, please visit the FDA's website for an approved list of chemicals.

Gel Eyeliner

The Gel or Cream eyeliner has a very waxy consistency and is generally applied with an eyeliner brush or a q-tip.

You should use a gel/cream eyeliner whenever you want to ensure that your eyeliner will be waterproof and will stay put. Since it is made of wax, it will not come off easily. I put mine to the test by rubbing my arm with water and soap. Only after a couple of seconds did the eyeliner start to smear off. It took eye makeup remover to get it completely off of my hand.

Use a brush to apply this eyeliner when you want more control over the line and/or need a more precise line. Dip a q-tip in the gel eyeliner in order to give it a smokey effect.

Gel eyeliner does great in the waterline because it's very waterproof. Although it is safe to apply it to the waterline, it is difficult to do so. I recommend getting a pencil eyeliner, dipping the end in the gel/cream eyeliner and then using the pencil tip to smudge on your waterline. Attempting to do so with a brush or q-tip will result in teary and red eyes.

Kajal Eyeliner

Kajal eyeliner

Londonlady on Hubpages

Londonlady on Hubpages

Kajal Eyeliner

You might not be able to tell from the photographs, but the Kajal eyeliner has an immediate benefit over any other pencil eyeliners: It's not creamy. I say this is a benefit because unlike other pencil eyeliners this one won't smudge nearly as easily, even in the waterline. It takes only a bit of moisture (a drop of water on your finger is fine, or even using the water in your waterline will do) to get the eyeliner working and it doesn't tug or pull on your eyes.

Think of this eyeliner as a dried out marker. If you attempt to write with it dry, it won't really work. Add a bit of water, and it will. The Kajal eyeliner in the photograph was not purchased in the United States, rather it is from Pakistan, where the Kajal eyeliner originated. Compared to other pencil eyeliners, this one lasts much longer than any of the ones I've used so far.

You can purchase these on Amazon or eBay. The traditional ones are not sold in the United States due to concerns over the ingredients, but if you are interested in purchasing one, I'd suggest the one in the photo, the Hashmi Kajal eyeliner which is lead-free (eliminating most of the concerns about Kajal liners not from the U.S.) and herbal.

Kohl and Regular Pencil Eyeliners

Kohl Eyeliner (bottom) Regular pencil eyeliner (top)

Londonlady on Hubpages

Londonlady on Hubpages

Kohl Pencil Eyeliner

The main characteristic that Kohl eyeliner is known for is the creaminess of the product. Kohl pencil is different from regular black pencil because it's much creamier and much easier to smudge around. It can be used to create smokey eyes without having to tug at your eyes so much.

For example if you wanted to create a really smokey eye using just eyeliner, you probably should choose Kohl eyeliner instead of Kajal eyeliner.

Kohl eyeliner is easy (super easy) to apply to the waterline, and it has the benefit of not making your eyes water so much since you do not have to keep retracing over your lines, however out of all the eyeliners I believe Kohl pencil to crease the easiest and last the least.

Regular Pencil Eyeliner

Regular pencil eyeliner is just that. Regular. It's a cross between a Kajal (a dry formula) and a Kohl eyeliner (a creamy formula). If there is any type of eyeliner you should have in your makeup bag it should be a regular pencil eyeliner because it's so versatile. It's good for the waterline, for tight-lining, and if you have a sharp tip, even a cat-eye.

The staying power of this eyeliner is generally around 3 hours (even if it claims to be waterproof). It combines the qualities of many eyeliners and similarly also combines the staying power. Pro's and con's, ultimately, it's your choice.

Mechanical Pencil (Retractable Eyeliner)

A retractable eyeliner, or mechanical pencil eyeliner, is no different than a regular pencil eyeliner or a kohl pencil except for the fact that it does not need to be sharpened. You just twist the barrel of the product and it pops up.

The downside to this type of eyeliner is that once the originally sharpened and crisp point is dull, there is almost no way to get it pointy again because there is nothing to sharpen, it's hard to create a cat-eye with this type of liner or to make very precise lines with it unless you find a way to sharpen it.

Liquid Eyeliner

Black and Green Liquid eyeliners

Londonlady on Hubpages

Liquid eyeliner applied

Londonlady on Hubpages

Liquid Eyeliner (Brush Tip)

There are two types of liquid eyeliner, the one shown in the picture to the right is a liquid liner with a brush tip. The second type, the felt-tip marker, is discussed in the next section.

Liquid eyeliner is about the best there is when it comes to staying power. There are some pretty noteworthy con's though. First off, you can't apply it to your waterline. Go ahead, try, it'll never dry. Second of all, it can't be smudged easily (this could also be a good quality).

If you're trying to create a long-lasting smokey eye, it'll be really hard to try to smudge liquid liner around before it dries. It only takes a few seconds to dry, more or less depending on the brand you have.

However if you want something that will last a long time, liquid eyeliner is the way to go.

The brush tip that usually comes with these forms of eyeliner is good for drawing thin, wispy lines however it does take some practice. If you press down on the brush hard enough they can be used to create thicker lines. You can see some of these differences in width in the picture.

Liquid eyeliner (felt-tip marker, or art liner)

Londonlady on Hubpages

Liquid eyeliner applied

Londonlady on Hubpages

Liquid Liner (Felt-Tip Marker)

This is the felt-tip marker. It's also a liquid eyeliner but instead of a brush we have a felt-tip. I prefer this type of liner to the brush tip ones because it allows you more control of the line you are making.

If you can learn to steady your hands, you can create quite beautiful shapes and geometric patterns with this eyeliner.

Of course its most common use is for a quick and easy cat-eye effect because it allows you to create thick and thin lines depending on how you hold the marker. Hold it flat against you eye for thicker lines and more perpendicular to your eye to draw thinner wispier lines.

The staying power is basically from the moment you put it on, to the moment you decide to wash it off. A felt-tip doesn't let you add too much product like a brush tip would, and therefore there is no risk of the eyeliner flaking and falling in your eyes because of excess product.

These eyeliners are also called art liners by some cosmetic companies like Lancome.

The retractable eyeliners can be sharpened. I have a liner that the top of pulls off. There is a small white plastic piece with a hole big enough for the liner to fit in. Twist it lightly and you have a sharpened pencil again. It looks just like a eyeliner sharpener but instead of metal blades, its plastic so its easier on your tip. Not all retractables have this, if you find one that does keep it. Even if you run out because theye are hard to come by. If you see one with a line at the opposite end of the lid, check and see if it has one in it. They are life savers!

I have always stuck with the tried and true eyeliner - which for me is the regular pencil eyeliner. However, a few years ago, I found the mechanical ones and loved them because I didn't have to worry about sharpening them. It was always such a mess and the ones I was getting kept breaking on me. That being said, I realized that my mechanical one, while a little more money in some ways, always ran out so quickly. Maybe I need a new type.

This hub was full of great information. Who would have thought there could be this much information on eyeliner. Well done. I have a tendency to rub my eyes a lot and I always end up walking around with only one eye having makeup. I might need to try the gel eyeliner!

I've been an online writer for over seven years. My articles often focus on beauty, health tips, and cooking.

Learn about the advantages and drawbacks of gel, liquid, kohl and shadow eyeliner.

Image by Leonela Salazar from Pixabay

Gel, liquid, pencil or just a smudge of eye shadow: Brands may bring out ‘new and exciting’ ways to highlight your eyes, but one of these four is the base in almost every case, and each one has its own unique strengths and weaknesses.

Choosing a liner isn’t just about ease of use—you can learn how to apply any one of them in a way that is right for you after just a few days. But the four different ‘styles’ of eyeliner lend different effects to your eyes, from dramatic and striking to gentle framing and shadowing.

And there is your skin type to consider, too. Oiliness can determine whether your makeup stays in place or whether your smouldering look will melt away in the heat.

Types of Eyeliner: The Pros and Cons

Liquid Eyeliner

This is the prima donna of the world of eye makeup, and it demands a steady hand and nerves of steel to perfectly draw those Cleopatra lines around your eyes. Once it’s on, it’s not coming off without a struggle and some makeup remover, and it is for the bold look with a stunning outfit, not for casual Saturday afternoon jeans and shopping.

Liquid eyeliner should be flawless. It doesn’t ‘do’ that smudged and smoky look, and if you have any sharpness to your features it will accent them and can make someone look just that little bit ‘pointy’. This kind of eyeliner best suits those with pristine complexions (or those that can create a pristine complexion with foundation and concealer!) and balanced, regular features—the rest of us, as well as envying you a little, might look better with an eyeliner that is a bit more forgiving and easier to apply.

Gel Eyeliner

The makeup artist’s dream, gel eyeliner comes in a pot and is applied with a small brush. Gel can also be used to create bold lines and catlike eyes, but if you want something more subtle you will also be able to smudge those lines and work on it some more after you’ve applied it—at least for a few seconds until it sets in place.

Once you’ve mastered the techniques, gel is easy to apply, and like liquid eyeliner it can create very strong, dark lines.

Eyeliner Pencil (Kohl)

Kohl has been the stalwart of the makeup bag ever since makeup bags were invented. It is portable, easy to apply, and when applied properly it creates the very best ‘smoky eyes’ look. Every woman who ever wears makeup needs a kohl pencil, and a good quality one will allow you to smudge it easily for the effect you want without rubbing off completely.

The kohl should be solid enough to draw fairly precise lines, but soft enough to glide on smoothly without dragging the skin. Most kohl pencil eyeliners need to be reapplied a couple of times through the day, and unless you’re a makeup genius, it will never create perfect ‘cat’s eyes’ in the same way as liquid liners. But kohl is (relatively) cheap, cheerful, and beloved of makeup wearers everywhere.

Solid Gel Automatic Pencils

These are growing in popularity, and it’s easy to see why. The best ones glide on and stay smudgable for about half a minute so that you can smear the harsh line if you want a softened look, and they dry to a long-lasting finish. These are portable and more convenient than the gels that come in a pot and need an applicator brush, but they aren’t quite as quick and easy as kohl to apply.

If you do prefer a softer look, the ‘nib’ of the solid gel pen will never blunt to your own personal perfection like your favourite kohl pencil, but the pigments are usually darker, more vibrant and long-lasting.

Eye Shadow Eyeliner

For this, get a small, angled makeup brush and dampen the bristles, then dip it in the eye shadow powder colour you want to use and apply it along the lid-lines as you would other eyeliners. This method can’t be used along the waterline area of your eyes, but it can create a wonderful effect around the edges. It can also be applied on top of liquid, gel or kohl lines to act as a ‘setting’ agent, or to give a more graduated and smouldering look.

Choosing an Eyeliner Type: What to Consider

1. The Oiliness (or Dryness) of Your Skin

If you have ‘dry’ or ‘normal’ skin, eyeliner will tend to stay put and ‘drift’ less, but dry skin types are also more likely to be more sensitive. The different types of eyeliner listed here won’t matter so much to you—any of them will stay in place, but you might want to check out the hypoallergenic brands to minimise irritation.

Oily skin is a different matter, and if you have very oily skin, eyeliner will tend to slide off within a couple of hours. The good news is that many people with oily skin tend to be less sensitive to products, and you will also get far fewer lines and wrinkles as you get older! Kohl pencil and the ‘eye shadow’ method of applying eyeliner will ‘soak up’ some of the oils, as will a good micropowder base foundation.

Or you can apply your favourite eyeliner and then dab a little eye shadow powder on top of that using the eye shadow eyeliner method above. An eye shadow that’s slightly lighter than your liner will add to a ‘smudged-and-smoky’ effect, whereas using some very dark eye shadow powder will dramatise stronger lines even more.

2. The Flawlessness (or Not) of Your Complexion

Some imperfections can be covered up with foundation and concealer, but it’s no surprise that others can’t, and some blemishes—such as acne—can be worsened by using a lot of makeup. If you are lucky enough to have a good, healthy skin tone and perfect skin, you’ll look great whether you go for strong Cleopatra ‘cat’s eyes’ lines or delicate touches of shadow around the edges of your lids.

But most of us aren’t so fortunate. Whilst dramatic eye makeup can create a focal point and draw attention away from blemishes, a subtler look using kohl and eye shadow will help give a more overall softness, which can draw your attention away from any self-consciousness you feel.

Hi Red, I've always been a liquid eyeliner girl and can't seem to get the same effect from gel. I have strong features but just can't do it as neatly with gel or kohl. I used to wear liquid cat's eyes day in day out but only do it when i'm on a night out these days. I wear kohl and copious amounts of mascara in the day as I wouldn't feel like me if I didn't accentuate my eyes. I do like to wear just mascara and a bright red lipstick sometimes which looks very dramatic. As you age, your make up has to change a bit or i'd feel (and look) like a drag queen!

Thanks Brianna, I've not tried Maybelline gel; I agree with you, though, that when you find a brand and type that works for you it's great :)

Brianna Stuart on June 27, 2012:

Personally, I prefer the gel eyeliner. I use Maybelline Eye Studio. It's about $10 I believe, but it lasts me a while, and it doesn't smear during the day. When I used shadow, it used to get in my eyes and I faded fast. Then, when I used liquid it was had to put it on my lower lash line without it getting in my eye. Pencil eyeliner tended to fade and smear easily as well. Gel eye line just seemed to work for me. :]

Mascara has been around for eons and is one of the quickest ways to pump up the volume of your puny lashes. New formulations take lashes to new lengths. Gone are the days of lumps, clumps, and raccoon smudges.

If you want to take the extra time in the morning, makeup artists suggest using a lash curler before applying mascara. The next step involves applying an eyelash primer. Today’s primers add length, volume, and help condition brittle eyelashes.

Apply your favorite mascara by wiggling the wand at the base of the lash and drawing it along the entire length of the lash. Another trick is to run the wand tip against individual lashes. Don’t neglect the lashes at the inner and outer corners of your eyes. If your mascara doesn’t come with a lash comb, purchase one to eliminate the excess that accumulates on your lashes. Simply comb through from base to tip once your mascara has dried.

To make the most of your mascara, never pump the wand in and out of the tube. To remove excess mascara, dab the wand gently against a tissue before applying. If you prefer a curved brush, bend your straight brush slightly for ease of application.

When selecting the perfect mascara, go with one that has a brush that glides smoothly through your lashes. This will ensure you get an even coat and prevent globs. Many manufacturers use a comb-like wand. However I prefer a brush applicator. Now, plastic bristle brushes are replacing the old wiry brushes. The plastic bristles work more like a comb, depositing color through the lashes for added volume and definition.

Also consider the type of formulation that is right for your lashes. If your lashes are stick straight, look for one that creates curl. If your lashes are long but thin, concentrate on formulas that volumize lashes. If you’re like me and have short, thin, and straight lashes (lucky us!), go for the gold and find a formula that promises volume, length, density, and curl. It never hurts to find one with a conditioner thrown in for good measure.

Lash Extensions

Considering the average person continually loses and grows eyelashes, lash extensions seem like a waste of both time money to me. However, they have become wildly popular and are offered as a basic service along with lash and brow tinting and brow waxing.

Like hair extensions, eyelash extensions add length, thickness, and fullness to natural eyelashes. Synthetic single-fiber polyester threads are applied to individual eyelashes. This type of eyelash enhancement is not the same as temporary false eyelashes.

An esthetician applies individual synthetic lashes, one-by-one, to single eyelashes to provide a longer, fuller look. A medical-grade adhesive is used to secure the extensions to lashes. The procedure can take up to two hours to complete, but the end result is quite amazing.

Lash Extension Application

Lash extensions will last between two weeks to two months—it is all dependent on your eyelash growth cycle. As your lashes grow, the extensions shed with your natural eyelashes. Follow-up visits are required every two to four weeks to maintain the look. Experts advise against using oil-based eye products, which may dissolve the adhesive.

Now here’s what you’ve been waiting for. The price for a set of eyelash extensions can range from $150 to $500, not including regular maintenance visits.

Eyelash Transplant

Here’s a solution for permanent lash loss (which can occur from years of using eyelash extensions). This medical procedure transplants hair from your scalp or leg, to your lashline. Since these transplanted “lashes” are harvested from regular hair follicles, they will need to be trimmed. Prices, and I would assume results, vary greatly—I have seen quotes ranging from $2500 to $6000 for both eyes.

False Eyelashes

Lash extensions and transplants too rich for your blood? Take another look at false eyelashes. Today’s falsies are way different than ones your mom wore. False eyelashes look real and blend in perfectly with your natural lashes. A variety of shades and lengths allow you to customize conservative day or dramatic evening looks.

These might be a little over the top!

False eyelashes come in sprigs, short strips, and full bands. The individual sprigs offer a more natural look, but take more time, patience and practice to apply. Each sprig must be glued and applied along the base of the lashes.

Applying False Eyelashes

Strip lashes and full bands are easier to apply, but may require the use of a smudged eyeliner to conceal the band. When you’re shopping for falsies, look for a natural length. If you must trim them, make sure you do it from the inside corner.

Be advised that false eyelashes are not for everyone. If you wear contact lenses, you probably need to steer clear of mineral oil based removers, so check the ingredients in eyelash adhesive removers before purchasing. The same goes for those who have undergone Lasik surgery. If you are unsure about the ingredients in adhesives and removers, speak to your optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Eyelash Tinting

Eyelash tinting is just as it sounds. You go to a salon and a mild, vegetable dye is applied to your eyelashes. Tinting is the perfect solution for women with naturally long lashes. Just think, no more time or money spent on mascara!

Tinting can be done in under 30 minutes. The esthetician protects the eye area to prevent dye from entering the eye. Dye is carefully applied to upper and lower lashes and must be allowed to penetrate the lashes for at least 10 minutes before rinsing.

Prices for eyelash tinting averages $25. Don’t base your decision on a salon that offers the best price. It is important to research and get references to find a reputable salon with estheticians qualified to tint lashes and brows.

If you choose eyelash tinting, it will become a regular part of your beauty salon visits. Schedule tinting appointments every three to five weeks, depending on your eyelash growth cycle.

Prescription Eyelash Growth Accelerator

Latisse is a prescription eyelash growth accelerator. From all accounts, it really works. Sadly, you must apply it twice a day, every day and the monthly cost runs about $120—and no, your insurance won’t cover it.

Latisse does come with risks. Although you will have beautiful, long lashes, you may experience redness, irritation and permanent discoloration of the eyelid. Some women have complained of a permanent change in iris color.

Latisse Experience

Non-Prescription Lash Stimulators

Hot on the heels of Latisse, many cosmetics manufacturers introduced non-prescription eyelash conditioners. They are advertised as growth accelerators, without the side effects of the prescription version. Products like Lash Relonge, Ardell Lashtique, Li Lash, and Revitalash are serums applied daily to the base of lashes.

Some of these are as expensive as Latisse, while others are priced more reasonably. Given the subjective nature of beauty product reviews, it is probably best to try them for yourself, rather than relying on someone else’s experience. It is always a good idea to check with your eye care professional to discuss safety concerns before investing money in these types of products.

Hopefully, with all of these options available, you will find the perfect trick to give you the thick, long lashes you desire!

Not a problem Jenny, any comments are GOOD comments!

Wow sounds like you've have/had an interesting and exciting career!

I'll check again with a surgeon here and see what they say. I always tend to be over cautious. Yes, Lasik has proved to be money well spent!

SNAP!! I had it, too. Best 2000 euros I ever spent! I just wish I'd done it sooner. I travelled so often to sub-Saharan Africa as a doctor of public health training traditional birth attendants, and had a choice between daily contacts or coke-bottle glasses. Now, I'm almost retired, they no longer send me on missions like that, I simply write the training manuals!! As I understood the info I was given, the area around the corneal flap they create is very vulnerable to noxious substances until it has healed. Conversely, in very dry conditions, like, I'm guessing Nevada must be, dry-eye-syndrome can be an ongoing problem. However, although oil touching the cornea could be a problem (especially as I said during the healing period), using it on the tissue AROUND the eye shouldn't be a problem. Certainly medicinal-grade castor oil isn't one for me. But I guess every surgeon has their own views (certainly we gynae/obs bods do), so I guess you're right to respect yours. Crikey, I've rather hi-jacked your thread and gone wildly off topic. Sorry, Ma'am. Promise not to do it again! :-)

Jenny, what a great (and inexpensive) lash conditioning trick! You're right, it does sound much more glamorous in French (but really, doesn't everything!) I'm not sure if I'm a good candidate for lash conditioning. I've had Lasik surgery, and the Dr. said to avoid any oil in or near the eyes, including things like oil-based makeup remover. So I'm a little skittish. Being a budget gal, I'm using Maybelline Lash Stilleto. It lengthens without the use of fibers (another no-no with Lasik). Maybe some day I can graduate to Guerlain Noir G! :) Keep the fantastic comments and ideas coming!

jennyinfrance on May 28, 2012:

There is a simple alternative. Every night, after using my eye cream, I brush my lashes with huile de ricin (which I think is simply castor oil, but it sounds better in French, huh?). It truly is effective. Definitely promotes lash growth, and thickens them too, with regular use. It's a trick I learned a few years ago from a make-up artist with Guerlain, and now I swear by it. Although, in fact, I am now using the new Noir G mascara from Guerlain, and it claims to have a built-in lash conditioner, extracted from plankton. I know it's a fabulous mascara - the best I've ever tried, as it curls and builds up lashes without ever clumping, or smudging, and I'm a sucker for it's uber-chic packaging, but it's too early to say whether or not it conditions. Meanwhile, I'll rely on the less glamorous (and far cheaper) castor oil to do that!!
